Title: Vygotsky Development & Zone of Proximal Dev & Constructivist Author: Professor Indiana Date published: 20May2010 Why relevant and summary: This video is relevant because it describes Vygotsky's theory of Zone of Proximal Development and gives good examples. This video shows how young children can be taught not only by teachers and adults but by their peers who are slightly more advanced than them.You are able to witness both Scaffolding and guided participation within this segment. How this influenced my thinking: It gave me a better understanding of Vygotsky's theory. Credibility of Source: it was published by a professor.

Title: Using Toys to Support Infant-Toddler Learning and Development Author: Gabriel Guyton Date Published: September 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This article discusses how caregivers can select and even make (using random household materials) age appropriate toys to support and enhance cognitive development. The author encourages finding toys that support development across all domains - cognitive development, fine motor, gross motor, language, etc. How this influenced my thinking: When I first sat down to right the short critical thinking assignment on cognition and toys, it did not even occur to me to write about home-made toys such as a simple first puzzle made out of a muffin tin and some small objects, yet in reality, things found around the house make some of the best toys - ones that really engage babies and toddlers and are truly beneficial to child development. Credibility of source: This article is from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), thus seems highly credible.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This article gave clear and concise information as to what development is occurring and at what age. Title: Infant looking time habituation. Activity 2 from "what babies can do?" DVD Author: power-babies-youtube video Date: March 24, 2011 Why relevant and summary:The process of habituation is very crucial to our cognitive development and ability to function in the world. This clip shows the activity how it is performed and how the data is collected and the graph plotted. I think it is very interesting watching what we learn how it is actually done in practice and also how it occurs naturally. How this influenced my thinking: It has made my belief stronger on the ability our children have to perform cognitive tasks at a much earlier age than previously thought. Credibility of source: This DVD is put together by a psychologist with a PhD in experimental psychology and cognitive science.

Title: Piagets Codnitive Developmental Theory Author:Kathleen M. Thies and John F. Travers Date Published:2001 Why Relevant and Summary:This book I found online goes over all of Piegets stages of development and touches on all the substages as well. I used it specifically for definitions such as mental structures and schemes, but it is useful for understanding every aspect of the theory. How This Influenced My Thinking: This enhanced my understanding of piagets theory and gave me good examples to relate the theory to. Credibility of Source: it is an online textbook, which has been analyzed and published so I think it is pretty reliable.

Has some videos as well exemplifying some of his concepts. How This Influenced My Thinking: This helped me get a better grasp on Piaget's sensorimotor stage of development and his understanding of an infants cognitive development. Title: Parenting Your Unique Child Author: Carol Ostergen, Ph.D. Date Published: 2004 Why Relevant and Summary: This article discusses the benefits to knowing and understanding your childs temperament and the goodness to fit theory. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has made me agree that each child should definitely be treated differently and that each child has a different response and parents can not respond the same way to each child and expect that each child will respond the same. Credibility of Source:Yes this article is credible. It also discusses a wide range of what to keep in mind when it comes to a child's temperament. How this influenced my thinking: This changed the way I think because it goes in detail how truly prepared a parent has to be. Credibility of source: it seems reliable it has refrences and cites everything.

It talks about how certain toys can help with their development, and use of imagination. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped back up what I had in mind. Credibility of Source: It seems credible. It has several other links incase one is interested in learning more about a specific or different subject.

Title: Temperament and Your Child's Personality Author: LLC and Dr. Myers Date Published: 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article gives a great explanation of what temperament is and how is affects your child, your child's development as well as you. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped me better understand what temperament in a child can influence development. Credibility of Source: Credible, the article by Dr. Meyers seemed to be thoroughly researched and well written in a way that was reader friendly.

They also go into explaining the nine temperament traits and give examples of each. How This Influenced My Thinking: I never really thought much about how important temperament was in children as well as goodness-of-fit when it came to the child's biology and their environment. Credibility of Source: very credible video featuring Thomas and Chess discussing temperament and their proposed concept of goodness-of-fit.

Title: Mother-Baby Behavioral sleep Laboratory Author: James McKenna Date Published: 2013 Why Relevant and Summary: Sharing your bed with your infant is a controversial issue, that has opponents and supporters. Dr McKenna has been studying sleep patterns of the infant for over 30 years and highly supports and recommends co sleeping if done properly. There are steps that he explains and the video is really good. How This Influenced My Thinking: I have practiced bed sharing with both my boys when they were infants and it was a very wonderful and beneficial experience for all of us. I am glad research supports it, despite media trying to make it a big issue. Credibility of Source:

Title:The Preschool Years: Physical & Cognitive Development Author:Robert Feldman Date Published:n.d Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it talks about the physical aspect of a toddlers early development. As well as their brain development, what you can and should not do. How This Influenced My Thinking: This made me realize that toddlers and infants are so complex because they can be affected really easy and it can transition into adulthood. Credibility of Source:Seems pretty credible, the author works for prentice hall. It is also based off of another resource.

McKenna, Ph.D. Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This webpage is very helpful if one is doing their Assignment on Co-sleeping It gives examples of countries who practice co-sleeping which involves the majority of the countries including the United States. Many people believe Americans don't practice co-sleeping but research shows that many Americans do. How This Influenced My Thinking: This webpage definitely helped me be more open about other cultures. I believed that only Latino families practiced co-sleeping, but it turns out that the majority of the world practices co-sleeping. Credibility of Source: This source seems credible due to the references that were used

It also talked about why co-sleeping is beneficial, what cultures favor it, and even provided a few statistics of the benefits of co-sleeping, and how common it is in the United States. How This Influenced My Thinking: This website didn't influence my thinking much because it spoke very highly of co-sleeping and i am already an advocate of it. Credibility of Source: The site seems credible because the information was backed with references.
