We need to normalize breastfeeding in our society. How This Influenced My Thinking: Breastfeeding long term is biologically normal, but not socially normal. The more we see the benefits and see mothers continuing to breastfeed, the more socially normal it will become. I am proud to call Jamie Grumet a friend of mine. Title: Breastfeeding vs. Bottle feeding Author: American Pregnancy Association Date Published: Last Updated 01/13 Why Relevant and Summary: This website is very easy to understand. It briefly states the pros and cons of breastfeeding and bottle feeding. This site will be very helpful if one is doing their paper on Breastfeeding and culture. How This Influenced My Thinking: I took a child development class a few years ago, so this article definitely helped me remember the pros and cons of breastfeeding and bottle feeding. Credibility of Source: This website is from the American Pregnancy Association so I definitely think this page is credible due to the name of the site and because it is an organization.

Title: Exclusive Breastfeeding for 6 Months Best for Babies Everywhere Author: No Author (World Health Organization) Date Published: 15 January 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: This statement from the WHO recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed for 6 months (no supplementation) based on the evidence from a recent 2009 study. The WHO also recommends that infants/toddlers continue to be breastfed for two years or more. The statement also covers some of the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby. How This Influenced My Thinking: Breastfeeding long term is biologically normal, but not socially normal. Credibility of Source: The World Health Organization is credible and bases it's statements off of research findings.

Why Relevant and Summary: Discusses what the fetus learns about its environment in utero and how it will help them when they are born into the real world How This Influenced My Thinking: This taught me about how much babies learn without being directly exposed to the external environment, as well as how rapidly they learn. Credibility of Source: Credible, from parenting website

Title:What babies learn in the womb Author:Laura Flynn Mccarthy Date Published:nd Why Relevant and Summary:This article is relevant because it discusses how newborns prefer mom's voice over someone elses, proving that infants can distinguish between voices. This article discusses a study done on one day old newborns. They are given pacifiers and depending on the sucking pattern, they start the recording of mom's voice or another person's voice. After twenty minutes, they learned to use the sucking pattern that started the recording of mom's voice. How This Influenced My Thinking:Babies are born learning. Clearly they understand more than people realize. It is up to us to stimulate and progress their learning. Credibility of Source:This comes from parenting.com so I seems credible, however, their are no citations or references.

Title: Parenting -Child Development Prenatal Care and Development Author: Healthline Date Published: 2010 Why relevant and summary: This website is relevant in that it talks about the signs on how to determine whether one is pregnant and what to do after. This website continues by describing the stages of development and what to expect when expecting. It ends by discussing the importance of healthcare all around from environment to doctors visits. How this influenced my thinking: I was able to learn a little more on why it is imperative to consider all the different possibilities when having a child and how it is crucial that one sustains a healthy condition throughout their pregnancy in order to give their child the best outcome possible. Credibilty of Source: This source was reviewed by another party.

Title:Prenatal care fact sheet Author:Womens health revised by John Schmitt MD Date Published:2009 Why Relevant and Summary: This is a list of the most commonyl asked questions regarding prenatal care and containes etensive answers for each question. it is relevant because it answers all of the most important questions surrounding pregnancy and it is also revised by a licensed physician. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking because of its high credibility and target audience. It is in a womenshealth website reviews by healthcare professionals so it is taken into account for many women who are about to have a child or are thinking of having a child. It really shined a light for me in regards to consumig folic acid during pregnancy and how important it is for preventing birth defects. Credibility of Source: High its a .gov

Title: Natural Childbirth & Waterbirth Facts, Benefits for Mom & Baby Author: Marie Black- Holistic Life Coach Date Published: Uploaded August 4th 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: Insightful information about benefits and concerns of the waterbirth method of childbirth. How This Influenced My Thinking: Good points on benefits of waterbirth, she was able to give me more information on my concerns as well as suggestions for research. Credibility of Source: very credible information and citing of sources.

Title:Prenatal development Author: Many Date Published:ND Why Relevant and Summary: This website was tremendously helpful when i was writing my paper on prenatal development. Not only does it take you through each stage of development and tell you what is happening, but it also discusses prenatal care. Pictures and diagrams are drawn to help you better understand what the site is discussing. It also describes some congenital and maternal derived abnormalities as well. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking by helping me understand what exactly goes on during each stage of pregnancy. I also never knew that abnormalities could be congenital or maternally derived so that was also interesting. Credibility of Source: The source has many citations and is from the encyclopedia of children's health so i assume its pretty credible

How This Influenced My Thinking:I never considered water birth or a midwife and it has opened my mind to these possibilities.  Credibility of Source:Failrly credible 

Title:Pregnancy, Birth, and Medicine Author: Rebecca Kukla, Catherine Wayne Date:February 17, 2011 Why Relevant to Summary: This is relevant to my summary because it talks about the ways of birth as well as pregnancy per and postnatal and it talks about medicine which ones are good and which ones are not. How this Influenced My Thinking: This made me realize that there is more about being pregnant and giving birth than just flowers and chocolates. It made me realize that I still have a lot to learn: credibility:it from the encyclopedia of philosophy in Standford University.

Title: Texas Mom Delivers Two Sets of Identical Twins Author:Katie Moisse Date: 2-18-2013 Why relevant to summary: This is a story of a woman giving birth to two sets of identical twin boys. It is a very rare occurrence and it mostly happen if IVF is involved; in this particular case was all natural. The pregnancy and delivery had no complications and the 4 baby boys were delivered at 31 weeks via c-section. How has this influenced my thinking: This was a good happy story that it doesn't happen very often.

Babies begin to absorb language within the womb in the last 10 weeks of pregnancy. In a study, infants only hours old sucked on a pascifier more often when they heard vowels sounds in their native language than when hearing vowel sound in a foreign language. The mother's body amplifies her voice so the baby cannot hear dad's voice. How This Influenced My Thinking:I never knew that a newborn could differentiate between a mother's voice. Title:In tea country, Indian mothers learn the importance of breastfeeding Author:Angela Walker Date Published:June 24, 2010 Why Relevant and Summary:Talks about breastfeeding in India. Angawadi health workers hold monthly meetings to teach on the importance of breastfeeding exclusively for the first 6 months. Before the health workers, mother's gave their infants goat's milk. They threw away the colostrum believing it was dirty. At first the women would not listen. The Angawadi health workers had to gain their trust. The health workers speak to all family members. Almost 2 million children die in India each year before age 5, mostly because of preventable diseases. How This Influenced My Thinking: Sometimes it just takes some educating and informing people on simple steps that can prevent infant and childhood death. Title: Breastfeeding Across Cultures Author: Keith Goetzman Date: 8/11/2009 Why Relevant and Summary: This just gives an example of the difference between cultures on the topic of breastfeeding in public, or just breastfeeding in general. This gives an example of Mongolian cultural differences. How This Influenced my Thinking: It showed me how different cultures vary, and how something labeled as "taboo" in our culture is completely normal for another.

Costello, Monica Contreras c , Magda Magris, Glida Hidalgo, Noah Fierer, and Rob Knight Date Published: May 24, 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it compares to modes of birth delivery: cesarean section and vaginal delivery. This article compares the types of microbes that inhabit a newborn's skin after birth. It looks at newborns born via cesarean section and vaginal. How This Influenced My Thinking: It provided a more quantifiable way to measure and compare cesarean section and vaginal birth because I still do not have a strong opinion as to how I would personally choose to have my children. Title: Methods of Childbirth Author: Web M.d Date Published:n.d Why Relevant and Summary: This website shows an overview of the most common form of labor and delivery. It gives examples of methods use to deliver a baby. How This Influenced My Thinking: Although i was aware of this form of childbirth method, I was not aware of the terminology that doctors use, and how complex childbirth actually is. It has open my eyes to the variety of methods. Credibility of Source: This source was somewhat credible. This website is useful if wanting to get an overview of the topic or if one is new to topic. This source is a good way to begin with research, however more extensive research should be done.

Title: Empathy, Mindblindness, and Theory of Mind Author: Lynne Soraya Date Published: May 19, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: An excellent overview of Theory of mind. The article also explains how researchers test for theory of mind. It links theory of mind to the concept of Empathy, and explores whether people with Asperger's lack empathy or simply the ability to read social cues. Several excellent links, quotes, and a diagram explaining how the topic is researched. How This Influenced My Thinking: I know of several families that have children diagnosed with Asperger's. The article raises the possibility that those children with Asperger's could benefit from learning how to read social cues, and that their ability to empathize could be fine. Better interpretation of social cues would help them with their theory of mind regarding how others feel. Credibility of Source: Comes from a published magazine, Psychology Today. Likely to be fairly credible.

Author:Klimstra, Hale, Raaijmakers, Branje, and Meeus Date Published: February 27, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: This is a relevant article because it shows research done on comparing weather identity formation is stable in adolescence or is it progressively changes. It refers to Erikson's theory as well as theorys from Waterman and Van Hoof. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has influenced my thinking by introducing me to new identity theories and exploring those theories and ideas more indepth. Credibility of Source: This is a credible source since it has many references to all the information provided and the article tells who the authors are and dates published.
