How This Influenced My Thinking: I was never aware of cosleeping, at least to the extent with which it can occur. I was educated on the risks of cosleeping, which I never knew were possible. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has made me agree that each child should definitely be treated differently and that each child has a different response and parents can not respond the same way to each child and expect that each child will respond the same. Travers Date Published:2001 Why Relevant and Summary:This book I found online goes over all of Piegets stages of development and touches on all the substages as well. I used it specifically for definitions such as mental structures and schemes, but it is useful for understanding every aspect of the theory. How This Influenced My Thinking: This enhanced my understanding of piagets theory and gave me good examples to relate the theory to. Credibility of Source: it is an online textbook, which has been analyzed and published so I think it is pretty reliable.

DVD Author: power-babies-youtube video Date: March 24, 2011 Why relevant and summary:The process of habituation is very crucial to our cognitive development and ability to function in the world. This clip shows the activity how it is performed and how the data is collected and the graph plotted. I think it is very interesting watching what we learn how it is actually done in practice and also how it occurs naturally. How this influenced my thinking: It has made my belief stronger on the ability our children have to perform cognitive tasks at a much earlier age than previously thought. Credibility of source: This DVD is put together by a psychologist with a PhD in experimental psychology and cognitive science.

Title: Vygotsky Development & Zone of Proximal Dev & Constructivist Author: Professor Indiana Date published: 20May2010 Why relevant and summary: This video is relevant because it describes Vygotsky's theory of Zone of Proximal Development and gives good examples. This video shows how young children can be taught not only by teachers and adults but by their peers who are slightly more advanced than them.You are able to witness both Scaffolding and guided participation within this segment. How this influenced my thinking: It gave me a better understanding of Vygotsky's theory. Credibility of Source: it was published by a professor.

Title: White Paper: Teaching in the Zone Author: Angela Lui Date published: 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This paper goes into amazing depth about zone proximal development as well as scaffolding. It doesn't give a generic textbook definition, but rather puts it into terms that are not only interesting but easy to understand. How this influenced my thinking: It allowed to be better understand what the textbook had already explained. I was able to see real life examples of these definitions. Credibility of source: Very credible, there were tons of references and the author appears to have done extensive research prior to writing this.

As it gives examples of habituation and dishabituation and provides references of studies done on infants to test habituation and dishabituation. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article furthered my understanding of habituation and dishabituation. Credibility of Source: Article found in the Journal of Cognition and Development. very credible.

Title: Lev Vygotsky Author: Saul McLeod Date Published: 2007 Why Relevant and Summary: Talks about Vygotsky and the theories that he created. It also has a good comparison between Vygotsky and Piaget. How This Influenced My Thinking: It was good additional material that went more in depth on the topic, and had some information that the textbook did not cover. Credibility of Source: Good - the author is a professor at Wigan and Leigh college.

The effects of Vygotsky's theory is presented and there is also a video that talks about the differences of both theories. How This Influenced My Thinking:I learned a lot more about Vygotsky and how his and Piaget's theory differ from one another. Credibility of Source:Credible.

Title: Lev Vygotsky Author: Saul McLeod Date Published: 2007 Why Relevant and Summary: This article was relevant to the writing assignment because it helped me understand that an important concept to the Zone of Proximal Development relates to the difference between what a child can achieve independently and what a child needs guidance with. How This Influenced My Thinking: This helped me know that children should have somewhat of independence and freedom to learn skills that'll benefit them in the future. This will teach the child to be responsible and to be independent. Credibility of Source: very credible

Kisilevsky et al Date: 18 May 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: This article summarizes a study that shows that infants are able to distinguish their mother's voice from stranger females and from father's voice. This study also indicated that infants can distinguish between their native language and non-native languages. How this influenced my thinking: We hear a lot of stories of infants immediately calming down or ceasing to cry when they hear a familiar voice, so it seems only natural that infants can recognize mother's voice from other female voices. It is also interesting that infants can distinguish between their native language and foreign languages. Credibility of Source: This study was published in Infant Behavior and Development, a journal. It seems highly credible.

Title: Guided Participation Author: Zeynep Isik-Ercan & Susan Golbeck - The Gale Group Date Published: 2009 Why Relevant & Summary: Not only explains what Guided Participation is, but also it's roots from both Vygotsky & Barbara Rogoff from her book "Apprenticeship in Thinking." How This Influenced My Thinking: It elaborated upon the information from the textbook, explained how social interaction plays a role in cognitive development, and the origins of the guided participation concept. Credibility of Source: Great - lots of references at the bottom of this article.

The article talks about how guided participation helps the child to achieve their goals. How this influenced my thinking: Helps me to realize the method of teaching I can do for my children so they will teach others the same way. Credibility of Source: There is a bibliography at the end to cite their sources that are equivalent to the sources of theory used.

It also discusses a wide range of what to keep in mind when it comes to a child's temperament. How this influenced my thinking: This changed the way I think because it goes in detail how truly prepared a parent has to be. Credibility of source: it seems reliable it has refrences and cites everything.

Title: Using Toys to Support Infant-Toddler Learning and Development Author: Gabriel Guyton Date Published: September 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This article discusses how caregivers can select and even make (using random household materials) age appropriate toys to support and enhance cognitive development. The author encourages finding toys that support development across all domains - cognitive development, fine motor, gross motor, language, etc. How this influenced my thinking: When I first sat down to right the short critical thinking assignment on cognition and toys, it did not even occur to me to write about home-made toys such as a simple first puzzle made out of a muffin tin and some small objects, yet in reality, things found around the house make some of the best toys - ones that really engage babies and toddlers and are truly beneficial to child development. Credibility of source: This article is from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), thus seems highly credible.
