Title: Bronfenbrenner's Ecologycal Systems Theory Author:Dede Paquete and John Ryan Date Published: July 12, 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: It gives a great overview of his theory and also how it is applied in practice, talks about its strength and weaknesses. After this general presentation breaks it down to its components and starts analyzing each layer of the ecological systems theory starting with the body and the brain of the child, which reflects to Bronfenbrenner's revised name for his theory from ecological to bioecological. Even though the material is a little bit old, it is definitely not outdated; it taps on important issues going on in our schools especially with the preschool system that serves underprivileged children. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has increased my understanding of the Bronfenbrenner's theory because the article provided examples. Credibility of Source: only thing that was provided was the article provided a list a reference page for quotes they cited.

Title: Genetics Author:QLD Science teachers Date published: ND Why relevant and summary: This site discusses genetics and many of the terms we were introduced to in our text and in class. It goes over dominant and recessive genes, what alleles are, phenotypes, genotypes and much more. It provides you with examples and definitions of words, and walks you through how to determine if a trait is dominant or recessive. How it influenced my thinking: It influenced my thinking by helping me see the difference between things like phenotypes and genotypes, as well as providing pictures and diagrams to further help with my understanding. Credibility of source: The site is obviously made by science teachers but it doesn't say who, or where they are from. I'd say this site is credible because it seems to provide you with good and accurate information, but you probably can't use it as a source for a research paper.

Brent Date Published:April 1, 2004 Why Relevant and Summary: Contains information on teratogens from various kinds to what malformations they can cause in the body. This article starts off by describing the criteria to be classified as a teratogen. There are three categories of congenital malformations: unknown, genetic, and environmental. The severity of effects of teratogen are determined by time of exposure and amount of exposure or threshold dose. How This Influenced My Thinking: There are specific criteria in order to be classified as caused by teratogen. Credibility of Source: The source is highly credible. It comes from the Journal of American Academy of Pediatrics.

Title: Genes vs. Environment Author: University of Edinburgh Date Published: May 16, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article provides information on over 800 sets of experiments that were done to prove how genes played a more important role in development than the environment. How This Influenced My Thinking: This made me want to conduct my own research or do my own study on twins who were separated at birth to see how identical their characteristics were after five or ten years of being apart. That would help me see for myself if genetics really do have a greater inpact than environment does on development. Credibility of Source: This source is credible because the information was derived from universities, journals, and other research organizations and they have references to all the information they used.

This article compares the types of microbes that inhabit a newborn's skin after birth. It looks at newborns born via cesarean section and vaginal. How This Influenced My Thinking: It provided a more quantifiable way to measure and compare cesarean section and vaginal birth because I still do not have a strong opinion as to how I would personally choose to have my children. Title: Water birth information Author: Waterbirth International Date Published: 01/2013 Why Relevant and Summary: I talk about water birth in my paper. This site gives reference to the positives of water births and just talks about the wonderful experience that one would look forward to if this was the method of their choice. How This Influenced My Thinking: Influences my thinking because it helped me to understand the water birth aspect and that hospital births are not the only way to give birth. Credibility of Source: It's a Waterbirth International website with information about doula's and midwives.

Title: Parenting styles/ Child temperaments : The match Author: Anita Gurian, PhD Date Published: Why Relevant and Summary: Its relevant because she talks not only but the child temperaments but about the types of parenting styles there are and how some styles might be good for certain temperaments. How to use your type of parenting style for your child's temperament. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helps my thinking because I'm able to see what kind of parenting style I have, what the temperaments of my children are and how I can match them so that my children are succeeding in life. Credibility of Source: I think its credible, a doctor wrote it along with supporting evidence of research.

Title: Parenting Your Unique Child Author: Carol Ostergen, Ph.D. Date Published: 2004 Why Relevant and Summary: This article discusses the benefits to knowing and understanding your childs temperament and the goodness to fit theory. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has made me agree that each child should definitely be treated differently and that each child has a different response and parents can not respond the same way to each child and expect that each child will respond the same. Credibility of Source:Yes this article is credible. It is written by Carols Ostergen PhD -University of Wisconsin-Extension Reviewed by Dave Riley PhD- Wisconsin Extension and James Cameron PhD- The Preventive Ounce.

Title: Fetal sensitivities to properties of maternal speech and language Author: B.S. Kisilevsky et al Date: 18 May 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: This article summarizes a study that shows that infants are able to distinguish their mother's voice from stranger females and from father's voice. This study also indicated that infants can distinguish between their native language and non-native languages. How this influenced my thinking: We hear a lot of stories of infants immediately calming down or ceasing to cry when they hear a familiar voice, so it seems only natural that infants can recognize mother's voice from other female voices. It is also interesting that infants can distinguish between their native language and foreign languages. Credibility of Source: This study was published in Infant Behavior and Development, a journal. It seems highly credible.

DVD Author: power-babies-youtube video Date: March 24, 2011 Why relevant and summary:The process of habituation is very crucial to our cognitive development and ability to function in the world. This clip shows the activity how it is performed and how the data is collected and the graph plotted. I think it is very interesting watching what we learn how it is actually done in practice and also how it occurs naturally. How this influenced my thinking: It has made my belief stronger on the ability our children have to perform cognitive tasks at a much earlier age than previously thought. Credibility of source: This DVD is put together by a psychologist with a PhD in experimental psychology and cognitive science.

As it gives examples of habituation and dishabituation and provides references of studies done on infants to test habituation and dishabituation. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article furthered my understanding of habituation and dishabituation. Credibility of Source: Article found in the Journal of Cognition and Development. very credible.

It explains why it is important to promote development for the toddler during early development. This goes into the discussion of cognition and toys and how infants learn from their environment. Children make schemas, how we organize and process information, in order to make sense of things. However, for children, assimilation and accomodation are necessary since they are constantly learning and can confuse things. How This Influenced My Thinking:Schemas are a good learning tool, but can also make learning difficult. It is important to be open minded in order to take in new information. Title: ADHD Overview Author: Jacob Silverman Date Published: No date Why relevant and summary: This is a comprehensive overview of ADHD, the causes, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments and related disorders. There are also a number of other highly relevant articles that are easily accessible on this site. How this influenced my thinking: There is a lot of information about raising a child with ADHD. I've never had experience with this in regards to my own children, but as a former teacher I have been aware of the 'basics' for many years. There is so much to learn and understand on this topic, especially so that caregivers can be more understanding of individualized needs and be less likely to judge or treat children with ADHD differently. Credibility of source: This is a Discovery Health article. It may not be highly credible in it's own right, but likely pulled it's information from scholarly/medical/research based resources.

Title: Baby Delight Author: unknown Date Published: 2013 Why Relevant & Summary: Upon studying the benefits but potential dangers of cosleeping, I was interested in how I could find a safe way to cosleep with my baby that would give me a feeling of safety but also the closeness I'd like to have with my baby. This product is simple, there are two different models, but basically allow baby the safety of sleeping with mom and dad while being close. How This Influenced My Thinking: Knowing the potential dangers of cosleeping, I would encourage friends and family to consider this option for their baby, and for myself in the future. title-ADHD author- multiple (its a governmental website) date-ND why relevant/summary-This site is relevant to my topic because it describes ADHD in a way that it easy to understand and break down. It discusses the 3 subtypes of adhd that i didnt even know existed. And it tells you what it used to treat it. how it influenced my thinking- This site influenced my thinking on what adhd is because before, i thought it was a straight forward disorder that people took medication for. But after visiting this site, i realized that there are different types, and it affects people differently. Not everyone is medicated for it, and many people go through life undiagnosed. credibility of source- credible since its a government website
