This is relevant because it explains prenatal care. How this Influenced my thinking: It coincided with what i already knew about prenatal care. i learned however that women should take folic acid even if unsure if they are pregnant, or if they are planning on getting pregnant Credibility of Source:part of U.S. department of health, women's health department.

It gives you tips and advice for prenatal development. It also gives you defenitions and good facts. How This Influenced My Thinking: This allowed me to see more of the preganancy side than anything else. I managed to read through it and find out that there are a lot of things you need to do while pregnant. Credibility: It came from Womenshealth.org, and a doctor wrote this, so I assume that it is very credible.

How This Influenced My Thinking: Provided important tips with which to keep in mind later on in life if this particular things will affect me. Credibility of Source: A federal government website managed by the Office on Women's Health in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Title: The Alarming Reason Why More Girls are Starting Puberty Early Author: Dr. Joseph Mercola Date Published: August 26, 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: This article was relevant because it explains a great deal of information that be or may not be factors in why girls are going through puberty at much younger ages than they once were just 20 years ago. In this article, Dr. Mercola explains some of the largest factors or early onset of puberty and explains why those things may cause early childhood puberty. How This Influenced My Thinking: This didn't so much influence my thinking as it confirmed my belief that chemicals in the food our children eat may very well play a major role in when they begin puberty. Credibility of Source: I find this article to be highly credible, Dr. Mercola seems to have done extensive research on the topic as well as included the input of other knowledgeable professionals.

Title: Bronfenbrenner Ecological Theory Author: Yukti Ahuja Date Published: No date listed, but it was written after 2005 because that was the date on several of the sources listed in the paper Why Relevant: It talks about how we can use Bronfenbrenner's theory to look at how we are raising children in today's world where parents may be busier and have less time to be involved in their children's lives. This lack of contact greatly affects a child's microsystem How this influenced my thinking: It made me think about the changes that have happened over the last few decades and how they have affected the lives of children that are being born in today's world. Credibility: Not sure about the credibility, there was no specific publisher listed, but the paper was well written, thoughtful and contained good sources in it.

How it changed my thinking: opened my eyes to how children are growing up today Credibility: fairly credible

Title: Nature vs Nurture: Outcome Depends on Where You Live Author: Nick Collins Date Published: 12 June 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This study is actually quite relevant, but I ranked it '6' simply due to the fact that it is based solely on research done in the UK. This article outlines a recent study that compared 6759 pairs of identical and non-identical twins across the UK, in the hopes of determining whether their genes or their environment was more important. The outcome: it depends where you live. Some areas were dubbed 'environemental hotspots' for certain traits, where in other areas the same traits were purely caused by genetics. Be sure to see the video maps at the bottom of the article. How This Influenced My Thinking: I think the nature vs nurture debate is rather subjective. Much of it is based in opinion, but this particular study shows that many things can impact our phenotype. I'm of the opinion that both genetics and environment contribute. For example, I met my biological father for the first time when I was 28 years old. We were surprised to discover that although we were literally strangers, we look very much alike, both have an affinity for foreign languages, both enjoy traveling and adventure, and we enjoy similar types of food. Additionally, I found out that my grandfather was an oral surgeon in Holland during WWII. This was particularly interesting because I've always had a mild fascination with dentistry and oral hygiene! Credibility of Source: The Telegraph is a reputable UK news source.

Title: Urie Bronfenbrenner and Child Development Author: Angela Oswalt Date Published: Jan. 17, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: This page is relevant because it speaks of Urie Bronfenbrenner's model of development. The main focus is on child and adolescent development. It compares Urie's model to other theoris of development. This is a great starting point if you want to learn about Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg and Urie Bronfenbrenner. How This Influenced My Thinking: From this model I understood that how a child develops is influenced from the systems in the child's life. However, when taking microsystem into consideration and the important people in the child's life, the way the child acts towards the microsystem (people) also influences how those people will act towards the child. Credibility of Source: No citations or references. Came from a mental help site.

Title: Urie Brofenbrenner and Child Development Author: Angela Oswalt Date Published: updated 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: It covers the systems and what they are, and gives clear examples. How This Influenced My Thinking: This entry helped me understand the systems a bit better. Credibility of Source: its a 17 page document covring many ideas and theories, it has many links connected to it.

Title: Urie Bronfenbrenner and Child Development Author: Angela Oswalt Date Published: January 17, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: It was relevant to the writing assignment because the article discussed in detail what happens in each of the levels in Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article helped me better understand what happens in each level because Oswalt gave examples of things that occur in every level. Credibility of Source: Very credible

Title: Bronfenbrenner's Ecologycal Systems Theory Author:Dede Paquete and John Ryan Date Published: July 12, 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: It gives a great overview of his theory and also how it is applied in practice, talks about its strength and weaknesses. After this general presentation breaks it down to its components and starts analyzing each layer of the ecological systems theory starting with the body and the brain of the child, which reflects to Bronfenbrenner's revised name for his theory from ecological to bioecological. Even though the material is a little bit old, it is definitely not outdated; it taps on important issues going on in our schools especially with the preschool system that serves underprivileged children. How This Influenced My Thinking: It gives specific examples, and brings his theory from abstract to practical thinking Credibility of Source: It is a publishing of the National Louis University

Title:The Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory Author: Dede Paquette, John Ryan Date Published:2001 Why Relevant and Summary: This particular article is relevant because it break down the each different level of Bronfenbrenner's theory and also provides an example for better understanding. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has increased my understanding of the Bronfenbrenner's theory because the article provided examples. Credibility of Source: only thing that was provided was the article provided a list a reference page for quotes they cited.

Title: Genetics Author:QLD Science teachers Date published: ND Why relevant and summary: This site discusses genetics and many of the terms we were introduced to in our text and in class. It goes over dominant and recessive genes, what alleles are, phenotypes, genotypes and much more. It provides you with examples and definitions of words, and walks you through how to determine if a trait is dominant or recessive. How it influenced my thinking: It influenced my thinking by helping me see the difference between things like phenotypes and genotypes, as well as providing pictures and diagrams to further help with my understanding. Credibility of source: The site is obviously made by science teachers but it doesn't say who, or where they are from. I'd say this site is credible because it seems to provide you with good and accurate information, but you probably can't use it as a source for a research paper.

Title: Genes vs. Environment Author: University of Edinburgh Date Published: May 16, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article provides information on over 800 sets of experiments that were done to prove how genes played a more important role in development than the environment. How This Influenced My Thinking: This made me want to conduct my own research or do my own study on twins who were separated at birth to see how identical their characteristics were after five or ten years of being apart. That would help me see for myself if genetics really do have a greater inpact than environment does on development. Credibility of Source: This source is credible because the information was derived from universities, journals, and other research organizations and they have references to all the information they used.

Title: Breastfeeding Across Cultures Author: Keith Goetzman Date: 8/11/2009 Why Relevant and Summary: This just gives an example of the difference between cultures on the topic of breastfeeding in public, or just breastfeeding in general. This gives an example of Mongolian cultural differences. How This Influenced my Thinking: It showed me how different cultures vary, and how something labeled as "taboo" in our culture is completely normal for another.

Title: Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Author: Jan Riordan Date Published: 1998 Why Relevant and Summary: This ebook is very relevant because it discusses how different culutres choose to breastfeed or not and how other cultures can determine if they will breastfeed or not. This ebook gets more in detail but from my reading (pgs. 716-719) it covers background information and provide examples on which culture breastfeed why or why not. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has influence my thinking because I subconsciously didn't realized why most people didn't breast feed besides it just being a trend. Credibility of Source: This is credible because it is a published book.

Title: Home birth: Know the pros and cons Author: Mayo Clinic Staff Date Published: 2011 Why relevant and summary: One of the birth options that I talked about was a homebirth. This article talked about why women choose to have homebirths, the cases where it would not be recommended and how to prepare for a homebirth How it influenced my thinking: It didn't change my thinking, but it was a good reference and confirmed some of the things that I said.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It influences me further in my belief that a water birth is the choice for me. Credibility of Source: Yes, the references listed at the bottom of this short overview, that were used to compile the information that was provided here, are credible sources.

Title:Prenatal development Author: Many Date Published:ND Why Relevant and Summary: This website was tremendously helpful when i was writing my paper on prenatal development. Not only does it take you through each stage of development and tell you what is happening, but it also discusses prenatal care. Pictures and diagrams are drawn to help you better understand what the site is discussing. It also describes some congenital and maternal derived abnormalities as well. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking by helping me understand what exactly goes on during each stage of pregnancy. I also never knew that abnormalities could be congenital or maternally derived so that was also interesting. Credibility of Source: The source has many citations and is from the encyclopedia of children's health so i assume its pretty credible

This website gave examples as well, which helps to understand this concept better How Influenced my Thinking: This has influenced my thinking by viewing how my life has been influenced by either genetics or enviornment. Before, i did not know that our enviornment could play a role in our development. Credibility: This website is credible because you can see who the author is and their backgrounds

Title: Water birth information Author: Waterbirth International Date Published: 01/2013 Why Relevant and Summary: I talk about water birth in my paper. This site gives reference to the positives of water births and just talks about the wonderful experience that one would look forward to if this was the method of their choice. How This Influenced My Thinking: Influences my thinking because it helped me to understand the water birth aspect and that hospital births are not the only way to give birth. Credibility of Source: It's a Waterbirth International website with information about doula's and midwives.

Title: Piagets Codnitive Developmental Theory Author:Kathleen M. Thies and John F. Travers Date Published:2001 Why Relevant and Summary:This book I found online goes over all of Piegets stages of development and touches on all the substages as well. I used it specifically for definitions such as mental structures and schemes, but it is useful for understanding every aspect of the theory. How This Influenced My Thinking: This enhanced my understanding of piagets theory and gave me good examples to relate the theory to. Credibility of Source: it is an online textbook, which has been analyzed and published so I think it is pretty reliable.
