It is relevant to "child birth and culture" because it goes over different methods of birth that not only American cultures use, but other cultures as well. There is a lot of interesting information that is provided in the website and it's also very insightful. author: Baby zone editors Date published: ND How this influenced my thinking: This article really opened my eyes to various types of child birth and the pros and cons that each one has. I had never really considered any other type of birth besides medicated birth in a hospital, but it was very interesting to read about the benefits of water birth. Title: From Conception to Birth: A Life Unfolds Authors: Alexander Tsiaras and Barry Werth Date Published: Book - 2002, TED talk video - Nov. 14, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This amazing book offers beautiful photographic high magnetic resonance scans of a baby from conception through birth. This book begins with the anatomy of the egg and sperm, and the cell division that occurs just after conception. Starting with the first few hours, then moving into the first several days, and finally presenting images of the growing fetus week-by-week, this is an absolutely fascinating book. NOTE: I own a copy and am willing to bring to class if anyone is interested. How this influenced my thinking: Every time I look through this book, I am fascinated and truly moved by the miracle that is the creation and development of us! Credibility of Source: The author, Alexander Tsiaras, is responsible for remarkable achievements in medical imaging technology. Barry Werth is a renowned U.S. science writer. The YouTube video is Alexander Tsiaras presenting on his medical imaging technology as applied in the book. He shows a clip of video as well. Relevant portion starts at 1:40. Title: Cultural differences among birthing women Author: Brenda Lane Date Published:2010 Why Relevant and Summary: Informative article that explains cultural differences in the birthing process including support system and who is involved in the process. Gives great examples across different cultures. How This Influenced My Thinking: Made me realize that there are different views on how a child should be birthed i always thought that the father has to be present no matter what in the process. This is not the case among people of other cultures. Credibility of Source: Medium.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It influenced my thoughts only when speaking about how the mothers thoughts can affect the unborn baby after about 6 months because the mothers hormones cross the blood supply to the baby allowing the baby to be affected by these hormones. How this Influenced My Thinking: This made me realize that there is more about being pregnant and giving birth than just flowers and chocolates. This article talked about why women choose to have homebirths, the cases where it would not be recommended and how to prepare for a homebirth How it influenced my thinking: It didn't change my thinking, but it was a good reference and confirmed some of the things that I said.

This article compares the types of microbes that inhabit a newborn's skin after birth. It looks at newborns born via cesarean section and vaginal. How This Influenced My Thinking: It provided a more quantifiable way to measure and compare cesarean section and vaginal birth because I still do not have a strong opinion as to how I would personally choose to have my children. Reviewed by Larissa Hirsch, MD Date Published: January 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: In our format, he asks us to give information on bonding and survival after birth. This article talks about bonding and how it really affects both the child and the parent. Its relevant because it's an important part of pregnancy, communicating and bonding while in the womb. This article also gives examples of what a positive environment might look like when bonding has taken place in the womb, and what it looks like after birth. How This Influenced My Thinking: It shows me that singing and talking to your belly is absolutely okay. Some people don't rub their belly or talk to their baby and sometimes, that can cause a slight disconnection in bonding when the baby is born. It will be something I keep in mind for my next pregnancy. Credibility of Source: This information is given on a Kids Health page and was reviewed by an M.D.

Title: Texas Mom Delivers Two Sets of Identical Twins Author:Katie Moisse Date: 2-18-2013 Why relevant to summary: This is a story of a woman giving birth to two sets of identical twin boys. It is a very rare occurrence and it mostly happen if IVF is involved; in this particular case was all natural. The pregnancy and delivery had no complications and the 4 baby boys were delivered at 31 weeks via c-section. How has this influenced my thinking: This was a good happy story that it doesn't happen very often.

Title: Breastfeeding Author: Doug Cope Date Published: 1/19/2013 Why Relevant and Summary: Great one minute talk about the benefits of breastfeeding, and alternative options. In a study from the Center for Disease and Control, 1,500 women were surveyed their plans for exclusive breastfeeding after birth of their incoming child, 85% of the women stated they planned to exclusively breastfeed, while only 32% of those moms actually were able to after birth, "..and that just shows that we're not supporting mothers to be able to feed their babies in ways they'd like". American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization recommend that women breastfeed exclusively for the first six months of babies lives due to the health benefits. Infants that are breastfed have reduced risk of ear infections, gastrointestinal infections, diabetes and sudden infant death syndrome. Mothers who breastfeed have reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer. In order to improve the breastfeeding rate, it is important that in the first days of an infant's life s/he can stay with their mother for the first 24 hours of life in the hospital to receive exclusively breast milk. How This Influenced My Thinking: I learned about the benefits of breastfeeding, and the large impact it has on babies' development. Credibility of Source: Very credible.
