Video on TED.com, filmed March 2011; posted March 2011. Salman Kahn talks about starting up Khan Academy, and its goal of offering short videos of exercises. He suggests that teachers consider flipping the classroom: give students video lectures to watch at home and do the exercises in class with the teacher there to help.

TM recommended this video as background on the idea of "flipped classroom."

Website offering a library of over 2,400 educational videos covering everything from arithmetic to physics, finance, and history and 150 practice exercises.

AH offered Khan Academy exercises to students as an alternative to homework. In many cases, those who took the Khan option in parallel to their classroom work really improved.

Collection of free writing exercises from the publisher Bedford / St. Martin's

A tumblr created by Luke Neff. From his "About" page, he describes himself as a teacher. This page has over 400 writing prompts, most of which include a photo or illustration, a quote, and then a suggestion for a writing exercise.

These might be useful in writing classes.

Produced by Learn Alberta (Canada), this site provides (online) interactive exercises in math.

Authoring Tool to create e-learning exercises.

Presented on TED.COM, filmed Feb 2010 and posted April 2010. Wujec discusses his experience using the Marshmallow Challenge in team-building exercises. Observing the challenge 100s of times, he sees that kindergarteners do better than recent business school grads (better at prototyping, less jockeying for leadership), CEOs do well, but do even better with an executive admin on their team because facilitation is important. High stakes (he's offered a cash reward) works better once the team has acquired skills; high stakes with no skills is a disaster.

Inspired by this video, both LS and RS used the Marshmallow Challenge as an icebreaker on their first class meetings (2nd semester) and both were pleased with the results.

The marshmallow challenge continued to be a popular icebreaker throughout the GSCC project. In semester 4, RS referenced this video again, and LS created her own video (see tag marshmallow) with her students completing the challenge.

This is the companion site to Susan Anker's Real writing (4th Edition). The site contains student resources (exercises and advice) as well as resources for writing faculty.

Exercise for lesson on essay writing

R.O. Lesson 10, Semester 2

This is an online exercise where writers can practice creating a Works Cited page (MLA style). Books and articles are given, and there is a link to the correct version of the Works Cited page, so students can check their answers. There is no attribution, but this is a learning object presented by Wisc-Online. Items in this digital library were "developed primarily by faculty from the Wisconsin Technical College System...."
