Reynolds interest is in presentations in general, but he feels that presentations are tied to teaching and learning, and so is interested in others' theories on education. He highlights a 30 minute presentation by physicist Dr. Tae about the difficulties in teaching in large (100s+) lecture halls, and the needs for connection and engagement in such settings.

Published by Center for Community College Student Engagement, 2010. This report looks at the Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE), launched fall 2006. From the report, "To date, more than 91,000 students from 197 colleges in 37 states have participated in SENSE, thereby helping to create a wealth of new and actionable data about the entering community college student experience."

Based at Indiana University, "NSSE annually collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development." According to NSSE, student engagement represents both "the amount of time and effort students put into their studies" and "how the institution deploys its resources and organizes the curriculum."

Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count. Cutting Edge Series No. 1 (2011) Guide is based on findings from Public Agenda's research into practices for engaging full-time and adjunct faculty in institutional change efforts toward increasing student success as community colleges.

This center, based at the University of Texas at Austin, is looking at the relative success of various intervention/engagement/support methods at community colleges. Follow CCCSE tag for more about this project.

Published by the Center for Community College Student Engagement (CCCSE), 2012. This is the first of three annual reports to look at "strategies that appear to be associated with a variety of indicators of student progress and success." For more on this project, follow the tag CCCSE.

A variety of ways that college students are seeking "relevant" education outside of the classroom, some of which are more technology-reliant than others. The article cites the National Survey of Student Engagement (Indiana University) and states that "four of the eight 'high-impact' learning activities identified required no classroom time at all...."

Looks closely at learning outside of the classroom.

This post describes ways to make LMS (and online courses) more engaging, following a gaming/Xbox model.

By George Lorenzo, 2011. A renewed interest in community colleges is resulting in looking at driving factors for the future success. This report looks at the potential solutions proposed in papers that came out of The White House Summit on Community Colleges held on October 5, 2010. These include industry partnerships, providing a more well-rounded education with career training, better support services at community colleges,etc. Lorenzo mentions The Learn and Earn initiative, technology with online and hybrid courses, open education resources and other ways to engage students. He looks at college readiness and what Complete College America, a new nonprofit organization, advises as ways to address this shortcoming.

The Strategy Institute, Feb 2-5, 2010, had the theme Equity and Excellence. This document is a PDF of the conference program, which included a plenary presentation by Uri Treisman.

From BM: "I also enjoyed hearing Uri Treisman speak on the "joyful conspiracy" he and the Carnegie Foundation are engaged in. This "joyful conspiracy" is just a little project....a complete overhaul of mathematics at the community college level. I encourage all math faculty to read and learn as much as you can about the Carnegie work here. I am certain that it will dramatically affect what you do for a living in the future."
