How One Stupid Tweet Blew Up Justine Sacco's Life - 3 views

  •
This is about more than than her specific issue. It shows the many dangers of thoughtless texting and the potential repercussions.
  •
I watched this unfold as it happened-such a cautionary tale, not to mention an exercise in slow-motion cringing. I like what this article has to say about the online "shaming" culture, which sometimes seems to be operating under its own inertia at this point.

Don't get overwhelmed learning about new technology - 0 views

  •
If you're like many individuals today, you may be feeling at least a little overwhelmed by the technology confronting you. Or maybe more than a little overwhelmed, making you think: How did I get so far behind? Don't worry, you're not alone.

Journal of Online Learning and Teaching / Building Community in the On-line Classroom - 1 views

  •
Introduction It is generally agreed that learning involves interaction and that it is a communal activity (McMillan & Chavis, 1986; Sarason, 1974). The traditional setting where communal learning activity occurs has been the in-person classroom; however, with the advent of technology that is no longer the case.

  •
by Mike Acedo Over the years, many of us have personally experienced the growth of technology in today's classrooms. Instead of taking notes, students are now occupied by surfing the Internet, scrolling through Facebook, and messaging their friends on their smart phones, tablets, and laptops.

21 Essential Strategies for Managing Remote Teams - 0 views

  •
I've been working with hundreds of virtual team members in over 9 different countries in the past 8 years. There have been times when I wanted to tear my hair out! Sometimes: - I had no idea what my team was doing. - Team members would "flake out".

This link includes a useful summary of virtual team technology tools. I like this list because it is categorized by the function/goals for the team and needs for collaboration. A way for us to consider guiding our exploration of team tools for educational groups.

This study sets out criteria--pluses and pitfalls--to judge the effectiveness of online collaborative learning. And its conclusion summarizes with good advice: don't be afraid to overhaul and seek new methods if you find the collaboration isn't working.

Creating Khan Academy Style Videos - 1 views

  •
This is a quick overview to making videos using a technique called "pencasting". It's the technique used in many of the Khan Academy teaching videos. I will also post the website of the author, Andrew Wolf from University of Rochester. He has many other ideas, links and helpful tutorials for blended/online learning.

The "flipped classroom" stuff here is provocative. I'm going to think about how to give it a try in media studies courses, even those at the grad level. I do wonder to what degree the extraordinary testing results are a result of the sheer novelty of the flipped classroom (and to what degree the scores would go back to normal as the novelty wore off).
  •
I consider my classroom, in general, flipped. My general rule of thumb is that the more I talk the less they learn, so I really push the application process.
  •
This is a great example of using these techniques. I see lots of application of this info in my future teaching. Thanks for sharing.

Cyberbullying or a Justified Broadcast of Opinion?: Public Shaming on Social Media Beco... - 0 views

Following up on Brent's post on Justine Sacco, here is a feature story one of my students wrote last semester on public shaming at Emory. You also can go to her podcast which you might find interesting despite its length and annoying undertone of typing.

An In-Depth Guide To Launching Your Own Podcast - 0 views

  •
Smashing Magazine is one of my go-to sources for ideas when it comes to designing or publishing anything on the web. This piece is a very thorough how-to about producing and publishing a podcast. In my courses, I try to teach how to produce media, but also how to publish and circulate that media. I'm considering having students in my graduate composition practicum course develop a podcast related to the subject of each week's class.

WPA Outcomes Statement for First-Year Composition (3.0), Approved July 17, 2014 | Counc... - 0 views

  •
One of the most important professional documents in my field is the Council of Writing Program Administrators (CWPA) Outcomes Statement. This statement, the result of years of collaboration and revision, defines general learning outcomes for first-year composition (FYC) courses. Most importantly for others in our EFOT class, the statement contains sections that explain how faculty in all programs and departments can build on the preparation students receive in FYC.
