"Mobile World Congress on Monday, Zuckerberg delineated some of his plans for moving forward with Internet.org, the initiative led by Facebook to bring Internet connectivity to poor countries around the world.  While Zuckerberg touted the altruistic vision of his company's goal to connect the next one billion people, it's important to note that the project isn't just for the sake of bringing basic services to those that don't have it, but rather bringing millions of additional eyeballs to Facebook and its advertisers.  See Also: Hey Facebook! Sony has released a new product to their Playstation line-up. Yup, the PS4. Sadly this isn't just it. For some odd reason, Sony has chosen to upgrade their PS3 Slim model to  an even slimmer model. Although the name "Superslim" isn't the most creative name, it sure lives up to it. It weighs just over 4.5 pounds, which is almost 3 pounds off from the original Slim model. Many critics have the same overall feel to it: It looks and feels terrible. This statement says to be influenced by the entire redesign of the SuperSlim model. This new model of the PS3, basically has the same internal hardware than the original PS3, despite the new outer look. Like the last two PS3 models, the SuperSlim, does not have the backwards compatibility with the PS2. Something that was long anticipated by the Playstation Fanboys. I hope Sony really gets his game up because I too, am a Playstation Fanboy, and looks up to Sony.

This free app asks you to put the time you want to fall asleep and accordingly on the screen gives you different timings based on a 90-minute cycle. In the app's settings, you can also add the amount of time it usually takes for you to fall asleep that 90Night can take that into account when giving you timings. Overall, it is a much easier process than setting an alarm for yourself. The app also works the other way around as you can set the time you want to wake up and 90Night will give you options of what time you should go to bed.

The video by, Youtube channel ExtraCreditz, is about the issue of frequency space. All information that we use is transmitted through the air by different forms of radiation (radio waves, microwaves, etc.) The problem is we are running out of frequencies to use; there are only a limited band of wave lengths to transmit information with. These wavelengths can't be infinitely divided because they would end up cancelling each other out. This issue derives from the explosion in smartphone and mobile device popularity. These devices use 24x and 122x the spectrum of older cellphones respectively.  Along with other devices, we are running out of the amount of frequencies available to transmit information with. By 2014, there will no longer be any more spectrum to use. This is detrimental to any progress in developments of information sharing, such as cloud gaming. The demand for spectrum space in such ideas and innovations is simply to high with the current usage of the resource. Unless we can find a way to solve this 'Spectrum Crunch,' many future developments will not be possible. This article is about glow in the dark highways in Netherlands. In the Netherlands, they eventually want to replace all street lights with glow in the dark paint. This will save them a lot of money in the long term and is a greener way to be safe. The paint will be charged by sunlight and will light up at night for up to 10 hours. When the temperatures are below freezing, the paint will light up light like a snowflake to warm drivers it may be slippery. In the summer it glows like a sun to warn people it is hot. I think this is a great idea because it will save a lot of energy and will save lives of many people, warning them of ice.

JavaScript is a well known programming tool that has been around for quite awhile. Many up and coming programmers start out with JavaScript based on it being flexible, maintainable, powerful, and very easy to use. However, once these startups start becoming larger and larger, many lines of coding are needed, and this is where the issue arrives. When being used on a larger scale, JavaScript is in no way the main performer as it is on the smaller scale. JavaScript's features previously stated are what attract programmers to using the engine. However, now that larger companies are using it, the limitations are becoming evident. Being described as an 'iron triangle', JavaScript's issues lie in the fact with an improvement in one area. another area suffers. If you want high flexibility and performance, it's going to be harder to maintain the code. If you want great performance and maintainability,  the flexibility and ability to adapt to change will be reduced. Big budget companies don't have time to be messing around with JavaScript's shortcomings, which is keeping them attracted to lesser engines, such as Flash. The article then continues to discuss whether or not JavaScript is on it's death bed. Some argue that a total revamp is required to keep JavaScript afloat, while others believe that the death of JavaScript will allow newer, more optimized engines to be developed and brought to the world's attention. I tagged this article as economics simply for that last point. Browser engines such as JavaScript and Flash have been around for quite awhile, with no threats to their status in sight. This article is about how Google maps now allow you to go into street view over the peaks of mountains.Google's Dan Fredinburg, program manager and mountaineer, lead Google Mountain Enthusiast teams up Aconcagua in Argentina, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mount Elbrus in Russia, and up to the Everest South Base Camp in Nepal. Unfortunately, the team showed up just a little bit too early in the season to make it all the way to the top of Everest, and had to settle for base camp citing their guides' literal warning of certain death on the way to the peak, Fredinburg told Wired. But summit of Everest or not, the sights are still amazing, and have never been quite this easy to see for yourself. So go on google maps to see how amazing these peaks really are.  In my opinion, I believe that this is incredible for everyone because not everyone is a mountaineer and some mountaineers themselves haven't been able to reach the peak of a mountain. So I believe that with this new feature, it will grab people's attention and give them a better idea of what the top of a mountain looks like.

This article gives the reader helpful information and the benefits to backing up your computer/hard drive. Without doing so, in the state of some kind of malfunction on your computer, you could be in a situation where all your files have been deleted and there is no way to get them back because there was no back up. This article appealed to me because I learned the hard way from a while back when my laptop had been infected with a virus which deleted every single program I had (even iTunes). 

This article explains how Dell, one of the largest and most successful PC makers in the world, has given up on a possible creation of their own smartphone. Dell expressed that they tried multiple times to produce a product that would be successful in the US smartphone market, but with a number of devices facing some serious bugs as well as a problem with slow speed, the company did not see positive results and they decided to trash the idea and process once and for all to focus on other opportunities. Dell is not getting out of the mobile device business altogether thanks to sales and success with devices sold in Asia and Japan, and the company will continue making low-cost phones and tablets for sale in emerging markets. With smartphones becoming a very successful and poplar device that many customers are increasingly taking an interest to, this setback has to worry or concern Dell because they are not able to compete will other huge named brands and companies in the mobile device bushiness. Dell has had it's highs and has had success over the years with products and devices, but maybe this is a wake up call that they don't have the money, resources, and high praise that more well-known companies do and this could be a huge factor to why the amount of success, more specifically in the phone industry, hasn't been enough to be a top contender in the mobile business altogether.

It's obvious that Apple is extremely successful. According to wired.com, Apple passed Microsoft as the world's largest tech company, and that was only in may of 2010. Its clear that other companies are trying to find ways to stand out, against Apple who dominates the computer market. So what does Intel do? Spend $300 million on Macbook Air knock offs.

As most of us know there is a constant war going on between mac & PC but now it seems as thought one of the contenders have given up. Many PC companies have now begun just making Mac clones! Apple is the leader in technological advances and PC's are struggling to keep up. This Drives the producers to try and follow the leader to see if they can capture the same technology at a PC's price.

Aren't you always annoyed by your parents because they ask you when to come home from the mall, or tell you the specific time when you have to go home? Well, to me that's annoying. Luckily, there's an app called "ImOK." This app works when parents sign up for an account and send a code to other members of the family. After this the other member of the family then signs up into the network of their phones. Teens check-in to the app for points, which plot their location on the map. While the adolescents check-in and add more information every time, they receive in return for their points is up to the parents. teens have a wishlist which they can suggest rewards in return of their points. Parents can either accept their ideas or add their own which both members can agree on. I believe that this app is a benefit on parents and their children because they both get something in return. The parents get their teen's trust, loyalty, and less stress, while the teen earns allowance. 

Are you tired of taking out your earphones and they are a tangled mess? Well now they have a "winder" that allows you to roll up earphones, usb wires, etc. Now you will not have to worry about a mess of wires under your computer, or a bunch of wires in your pocket(earphones). You can also fit cellphone earphones with the microphones on them. You can get a medium or large one for $9-10. This relates to the course because earphones plug into hardware's and it makes it more easier for everybody.   

Don't you just hate it when your cord in your pocket gets all tangled up and it takes FOREVER to untie all the knots and stuff. well now you don't need to worry because inventor David Alden designed the Recoil Winder. Just a simple device, pull the middle cord, and it rolls up. Basically a spring mechanism inspired BY TAPE MEASURES! The recoil winder comes in three sizes. Small size for iPod earbuds, medium for the charger cord for an iPhone, and large is for a USB cord. Recoil Winder is funded by Kickstarter, for 8$ you can get the small recoil winder, 9$ for medium and 10$ for large. 30$ for all three along with the rack. Shipping will be in April.

I'm actually very surprised that Google was able to get away with having a 50 MB limit on apps for so long. iOS has a much bigger limit, if there even is one, which allows for apps with more resources. Before this change in policy that allows up to 4GB apps in the Android Market, users would essentially download a client app that would get the rest of the files from a server hosted by the app's developer. This can be very costly for some, and drive away development on Android, so it's a good thing Google upped their limit.

Computers were first created in the 1940's and by the end of 2002, one billion computers have been sold worldwide. The increase of computers being sold each year has been creating large amounts of electronic waste and can be a source of toxins if not treated appropriately. The problem that we are facing is that an average 24-kilogram desktop computer requires at least 10 times its weight in fossil fuels and chemicals to be made. Compared to automobiles or refrigerators that only require 1-2 times their weight in fossil fuels, computers have become a serious problem for our environment. By throwing out your old computers, it adds to the mountain of electronic garbage that helps to increase environmental pollution and global climate change. Since this is a problem, most people today are encouraged to recycle computer components so they could be used again. The recycling not only helps the environment but it also eliminates the need to dig out the fossil fuels from nature. I personally believe that the act of recycling these old computers is great for the environment and will help us to save the natural fossil fuels that we so very often use up. The other good news is that companies are now creating their computers from recycled materials to help out on the recycling process.

According to this article, when it comes to computers and the environment the main concern comes from the consequences created when disposing the machine. Overtime, the amount of computer sales have been skyrocketing. This increase, coupled with changing technology, led to large amounts of electronic waste. The metals commonly found in PC's are aluminum, antimony, arsenic, barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, gallium, gold, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, palladium, platinum, selenium, silver and zinc. Eight of the metals are listed as hazardous. I think that this article is true. Many people don't understand that computers need to recycled properly. If people were to start recycling their computers, i think our environment would look better.

The main concern with computers is the process of creating and disposal. The number of computers being made increases as demand goes up, and this has lead to mass electronic waste. This waste tends to be toxic and damaging to the environment. An average computer will use up ten times its weight in fossil fuels to make. As this is a big issue, the UN decided to review the complications it may have in the future. Significant energy use, long term health affects on people, and long term impacts on the environment are all problems. Solutions to this are viable though. Recycling from people and corporations go a long way. Selling of unused parts is always an option, or even a charity donation. This is a problem now, but might not have to be. Computer recycling is a big motion being taken by businesses, because it happens to be cost-effective and good for the environment. Only good things I have to say about the progression of environmental impacts of tech. Let's hope for a continuing trend.

With each new generation of smartphones, dropped calls and battery life issues are still an issue, the reason is partly because antenna technology has not changed very much. Scottish scientists have changed this. They spent 7 years to create a cellphone antenna quite smaller than a coin. The Sofant Technologies team claims that this new antenna is more efficient, finding signals faster and using up less battery life. The smaller something is in technology the less it has to travel therefore speeding the device up. The antenna also takes advantage of the full potential of LTE and 4G connectivity. Sofant plans on licensing its designs to smartphone manufacturers all over the world.  I chose the tag of portable computing because this article is about antennas, a vital part of a cellphone. This new antenna will affect people who use cellphones, which is a large amount of people in North America. In my opinion I think this new antenna is long overdue. The fact that antenna technology hasn't changed much over the years is pretty surprising. This new antenna is a step in the right direction for smartphones. 

We all know that voice recognition software exists having been created by companies like Apple, some of us thought that advanced technology would end at a computer recognizing words and responding to questions. However that is not the case. A company called Kimera Systems is developing a system that figuratively reads your mind. This isn't a software that literally reads what you are thinking and performs an action based on your thought since that would require an implant into your body. Rather, Kimera's system consisting of the Salience Engine and DigitalMe (or DMe) Smart Agents. The Salience Engine collects information from its users and uses this to understand human action better while the Smart Agents perform actions based on the user's preferences and the user's previous actions. For example, if a user sent out party invitations to friends and then went out to buy groceries, Kimera's system would automatically download a shopping app for the user because the system understands the user is going to the grocery store to buy select food items. This system, should it be implemented into future phones and devices could very well change society for the better and for worse. This system could make people's lives better by allowing decisions to be made by the system for the user so they can worry about other things while knowing Kimera's system will take care of tasks for them. This could negatively impact society though because since the system automatically makes decisions for the user, if they begin to rely on this system and lose their sense of judgement rendering them unable to decide without this system. Though automated technology is the dream of many, is an automated life really what we want? From this new technology Kimera is creating, other more advanced automated technologies could arise and eventually we could end up losing our humanity since everything we need to do is done for us by a computer.
