Python Software Foundation News: Python trademark at risk in Europe: We need your help! - 0 views

  •
In this article it talks about companies trying to trademark the name "Python" for their server products. The company "Veber" is trying to trademark exclusive right to use Python for software, servers, and web services everywhere in Europe. After briefly explaining what the company is trying to do the article teaches people how they could help stop this from happening.      The article tells the readers to send emails tops psf-trademarks@python.org telling them how they use Python and send them any published information mentioning the Python language. By doing this they can prove that Python the programming language is used everywhere and not only the language the name as well. With this they can top Python from becoming an exclusive trademark.

Gaikai brings its cloud gaming to Facebook, launches beta application -- Engadget - 0 views

  •
Facebook is a website that is used by many users around the world. It is used to see others profiles and keep in touch with all your friends. Facebook usually has many games you can play with your friends like battleship and farmville. But now Facebook is thinking of having full games on the website. They want games to be easily accessible to buy. They want to start with games like Magicka, Dead Rising2, Saints Row3, etc. I think it is a great idea for Facebook because they can make a lot of money if they put popular games on the web. I personally would not buy them off Facebook because I prefer video games on a ps3 or xbox. It relates to the course because you need to program these games on the web for people to buy. As well, its on a social networking site which makes the games get purchased more often.

Instagram Won the Lottery - 0 views

  •
Instagram has been sold to Facebook for a billion dollars. Instagram has been out-doing both Facebook and Google. There had been much money tossed around to buy Instagram, fortunately for Facebook, they bought them out. Instagram is an App that adds effects to any picture you have taken. It allows you to change the way the picture looks with a quick edit and doesn't take long at all. Also, you are able to upload this picture to the server and various amounts of people can view it, if you wish. In addition, you may also follow people too to see what they post. This is relevant to the things learned so far because the creators of this app have are now millionaires due to their extensive knowledge of building App programs and knowing how they work. The app is quick and easy, it is a free download and because of the many free downloads around the world, the developers are now rewarded.

Force Flyer accelerometer-controlled RC helicopter, we go gloves-on (video) -- Engadget - 0 views

  •
There are many toy helicopters that you can buy, but what makes this toy different than the rest is that you can move the helicopter with your hand. You basically wear this glove with a joystick and you are able to make the helicopter move through the air just by waving your hands. This toy relates to this course because you have to be able to program this device to do all the movements that the glove is doing. As well, the software on this device is incredible and its a gaming device for all to have fun.

RIM's latest patent details automatic volume adjustments based on handset placement -- ... - 0 views

  •
People tend to get upset when they are trying to hear the person on the other end of the phone. It could be very irritating not not hear the person and we tend to struggle to higher the volume. Now RIM has created a handset that changes the volume determining how far the device is away from your ear. It has detectors that adjust the volume. Its very cool because it can sense when you are walking and talking so it can change the volume. It relates to this course because it take in operating system to know what to do and it is on a hardware. It also needs to be programmed to work.

Harry Potter e-books now available to muggles -- Engadget - 0 views

  •
E-books are more co-manly used these days instead of actual books. This is because you can store all these books on a digital device without having to carry a bunch of books around. I think it is good that Harry Potter is going to e-books because it is a very popular book that many people all over the world enjoy. Each book will cost $8-10 and it appears there are going to be enhanced books on the way. This relates to the course because you need to program the books onto the website so you can buy them and put them on your e-reader. The e-reader is the hardware where you can read the books. As well, i bet most of the people in this class have watched or read harry potter :)

How To Crack the Passcode of Any iOS Device - 0 views

  •
You think your iPhone or Android phone is safe from hackers just because of a passcode lock? Well, the Swedish security firm Micro Systemation just developed a cracking program that is called "XRY" that can hack into any, I repeat, any passcode of any mobile device. It works by first jailbreaking the phone to expose security flaws in the OS, then proceeds to brute-force the default four-digit pin, which only has 10,000 possible combinations to begin with. This all happens in under two minutes. Once the device has been unlocked, they can get any information they want- from logs contacts and even DELETED items.
  •
It's a shame that this only works by jailbreaking the phone... This could have been... Useful.

BrowserQuest Is Pure HTML5 Gaming Goodness | Webmonkey | Wired.com - 0 views

  •
This game is called BrowserQuest, which is written in fully HTML5 pages. It uses CSS,HTML5 and Javascript to fully make this game. Now, software companies do not need to worry about using Flash, and can make complex games for all devices. It is a 16-bit-style and this game can work on chrome, firefox, safari etc. This game is said to be very addicting with secret items hidden in the worlds. This relates to the course because we are currently working with HTML pages and we learn how to use them. I find it fascinating that they can use these pages to make fun-filled games for everyone. As well, they need to program these pages to make them work on the web.

Voice-Controlled Camera Concept Lets You Say When to Take the Shot - 0 views

  •
This voice-controlled camera is useful for those people who have problems taking pictures, like myself. I find that it's hard to make a mistake by telling the camera to take the shot. This camera created by Apple is high-tech and a newly programmed device that will help benefit others. The simplicity of this new device is fantastic in my opinion. Also, the fact that the camera does not pick up unwanted background sounds is fortunate because you'll finally be able to hear the audio clearly.

  •
This article represents a tool called the AutoHotkey. This is a downloadable program that will help you create shortcuts for system tasks in Windows. This tool can assign hotkeys such as shutting down or restarting your computer, adjusting volume, and opening/closing the CD drive, etc. I find this very convenient for people who use their computers everyday because it arranges a more faster and easier use for system task. It is also very useful for people who are lazy and don't want press buttons on certain areas of the computer or monitor.

Top 10 Ways to Make the Best of an Old, Crappy Computer - 1 views

  •
This article gives people an idea as to what to do with those old computers we have lying around our houses that we don't use anymore. Although, there are many of us out there that have newer computers as opposed to what we've used five or so years ago, it is still a good idea to want to put those outdated pc's to good use. I think this is helpful because for those that still use the old kinds of computers and don't want to have to buy the new, super expensive ones, this article will help give an idea what to do with them.
  •
Well this article is pretty interesting, because it explains how to renew an old ugly horrible computer, into a good computer that can make a huge difference. One of the rules was to upgrade your hardware which is a hard thing to do, but it can boost certain type of areas in your machine. It is a smart thing to do, but it is really worth paying for all of this, just to make your old ugly computer fast, and good again? I prefer to just buy a better computer. Instead of using faster programs, upgrading hardwares, etc. But these rules are really smart, and useful for people that like to use old computers.

IBM's new services zero in on fraud, financial crime | Business Tech - CNET News - 0 views

  •
The article that I have chosen to share for week 4 is about IBM and their new services to help eliminate fraud and financial crime. The article interested be because around 3.5 trillion dollars are lost per year to financial crime and fraud through technology. While the software is being marketed to big companies it also directly involves us, the consumers. For example when Sony's PSN was down thousands of peoples accounts were hacked and had money taken from their accounts. This new software interested me because now people can feel a little more secure using online programs knowing that their information can be safer. It is a new time where many things are bought through the internet and with better security people won't feel as worried about their security

Addictive iPhone Game Aiko Island Rivals Angry Birds | GameLife | Wired.com - 0 views

  •
Yet another ipod physics game. It seems to be very addicting and worth to try out. The game itself is just saving 4 blue balls and popping 4 red balls, as easy as this may sound it actually isn't. What struck me was that this what looks like to be simple game actually took 9 months of programming.

Why Startups Are Helping The Economy More Than You Think | TechCrunch - 0 views

  •
This article touches on a very important topic about whether technology is helping the economy and job markets more or if it is in fact hurting it. The answer is they do both. The New York Times among others write that tech companies have created relatively few jobs compared to industries such as GM. However TechCrunch argues that technology has created a lot more indirect jobs due to technology. There are in fact new jobs created such as social media marketers online. Most of these jobs are part-time because they are online and connect employers and workers with no hassle. Their conclusion is that there are millions of jobs created with a high demand but an unprepared workforce. The jobs that are needed now are more technology based than ever before and our economy is moving so fast in that direction that some skills that were needed in the past are no longer needed now. Therefore people are losing jobs not because there are not enough jobs produced but because our job market is drastically changing.  Some companies are allowing people to step into job positions with just a bit of online training or courses. Startups like General assembly are creating programs that are accessible to everyone and helps address the needs of the labor market. The final verdict is we need better training tools to quickly acquire high demanded skills and help workers adapt to the change that technology brings to the labour market. This article relates to economics and eLifestyle mostly because it has to do with how our economy is growing from the jobs created by technology but also how our workers have to respond to this change. This article deals with the changes that the labour market is going through now and how the increase in technology is now changing our lives. Some of our old jobs are being replaced by new jobs that not enough people are qualified for, so certain careers are feeling a job decline making it seem like technology is replacing workers. But in fact these new tools a

Need a Job? You'd Better Learn to Code - 0 views

  •
This article (written by Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai) is an interesting analysis of a general trend in the tech industry and demand for people with coding experience. The article states that now is the best time to dive in to coding because it has never been cheaper/easier to do so, with the introduction of Codeacademy - used in ICS20 - in early 2012. In less than 5 months, Codeacademy had stated that it reached over 1 million registered accounts, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Many web-based companies, even the titans that are Facebook and Google, are always looking for people with coding experience. Jobs in programming are also more lucrative than most jobs, even at entry level positions (15 of 21 San Fransisco Developer Bootcamp students were offered jobs in coding, with an average annual pay of $79 000.) The industry is severely lacking in female programmers as well, with only 1:10 ratio of women to men in the industry. This relates to Economics, eLifestyle and ultimately the ISC20 class because as the industry develops, there will be a higher demand for people with experience in coding; 2012 has been widely concerned as the best year for coding because many people who start coding now will most likely be secured for a positon right out of University, which can be very securing to young people who may not be sure of their future. Evidentally, the title says it all; if you are looking for a job, it would be wise to pick up coding because this a newly establihed market; most jobs in computers didn't exist twenty years ago so many people believe that coding will eventually become a societal necessary education, like math or grammar skills. This article shows how we are in a somewhat technological revolution, where we are creating new jobs where all the others are already full.

Top 10 Most Pirated Movies on BitTorrent | TorrentFreak - 0 views

  •
This article is about the top 10 most pirated movies through the use of a program called BitTorrent. BitTorrent makes you download files for no price what so ever. Pirating movies is an illegal thing to do because it makes people download movies for free when people make DVD or Blue Ray copy of it in stores for a decent price. It's unfair to pirate these movies because some of the people who don't torrent movies and buy the real thing pay for it rather than just having to download a copy of the movie for free. In addition, if you use torrents, there's a chance of being caught for downloading things that would originally have a price and get them for free. In my opinion, using torrents can appeal to many of it's users as you can get a variety of things such a movies but it can be claimed as copyright and might be dangerous as you can be caught.

Switched On: A 4K in the road - 0 views

  •
This article is about the transition from HD to 4K, which is know as Ultra High Definition (UHD). It talks about how a decade ago, we were introduced to HD TV, which is now a standard in the TV and technology community, and how the consumers reacted to it and how it transitioned compared to how we were transitioned into 3DTV. At the time, HD TV was expensive, but when the price came to an affordable price, it was a big hit and made a lot of money over the years. Now we are being introduced to UHD and the question people are asking is how will the consumers react to this. When 3D TV was introduced, it sounded like it was an amazing thing to have, but it did not sell well, as it was marketed to children and the only real 3D programming were sports and some action films. 4K is a huge improvement in technology from HD, but not many people think it will bloom just as HD did. We will have to wait for an answer when the public is able to purchase these TV's, but for now, the road that 4K is looking like it will take is right down the middle.

Google Maps' New Mountain Summit Street View Lets You Peek Off the Peaks You'll Never C... - 0 views

  •
This article is about how Google maps now allow you to go into street view over the peaks of mountains.Google's Dan Fredinburg, program manager and mountaineer, lead Google Mountain Enthusiast teams up Aconcagua in Argentina, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mount Elbrus in Russia, and up to the Everest South Base Camp in Nepal. Unfortunately, the team showed up just a little bit too early in the season to make it all the way to the top of Everest, and had to settle for base camp citing their guides' literal warning of certain death on the way to the peak, Fredinburg told Wired. But summit of Everest or not, the sights are still amazing, and have never been quite this easy to see for yourself. So go on google maps to see how amazing these peaks really are.  In my opinion, I believe that this is incredible for everyone because not everyone is a mountaineer and some mountaineers themselves haven't been able to reach the peak of a mountain. So I believe that with this new feature, it will grab people's attention and give them a better idea of what the top of a mountain looks like.
