He offers a few useful methods for athletes to improve academic performance and achieve success in the classroom. He argues the importance of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and its newest provisions added to improve the academic requirements for student athletes at all universities. He offers practical information, relevant for this study while also making intriguing and stimulating points necessary for his research.

Many state that their reason for such an addition is due to the new academic rules set by the NCAA. Although many universities are deciding to add new programs, increasing academic support is nothing new. Several colleges have faced scrutiny along the way for spending too much money on facilities and personnel necessary for improving academic programs. The authors do a great job of expressing the importance and need for such academic programs and support.

The authors discuss the serious consequences of low health literacy for individual health and the added demands it places on the health care system. Problems resulting from low literacy cause increased health complications and increased hospitalization for patients. Because of the inability for patients to understand medical instructions and directives by health professionals, many patients experience more health problems which lead to additional health care expenditures, translating to billions of dollars for the nation. The authors make important points, but much research is based on studies from a single public hospital. However, the facts presented provide valid information.

These article provides information on academic support programs for student athletes. Various athletic-academic scandals have forced universities to provide needed academic support to student athletes. Campus consensus on academic support program must be developed by involving central administration, faculty, and athletic department personnel. Before selling up an athletic support program, a careful self-assessment can also serve as an example of institutional reform. A decision must be made whether the program should operate internally in the athletic department or externally in the campus administration. The first step in beginning an academic support program is assessing athletes through testing and records. The program should emphasize skill development and counseling, preferably in programs already existing for the general student body on campus. Budgets for large programs range between $250,000 to $500,000 a year. The program should be annually evaluated by looking at retention and graduation rates of student athletes. The program's success depends on the commitment of the university and the participation of the community.

The study found that Americans read less in 2007 compared with previous years. The study found that reading abilities for teenagers and adults have declined, whereas reading abilities for younger children have increased. This paper investigates gender differences in academic performance among university athletes at an NCAA Division I school. Using regression analysis, the findings suggest that background scholastic achievement variables and race influence university academic performance for student athletes, but sport participation measures and race are negatively related to university academic performance for males only. The consequences of inequalities between men's and women's athletic programs are explored. Implications for academic programs are discussed. (Abstract from author as it appears on EBSCO.)

This is an article/study that explain the history/study that explains the history of the Mozart Effect and the experiment being conducted by Cristy Ho, Oliver Mason and Charles Spence. The main purpose for the Mozart Effect was to improve people's intelligence, however that wasn't the intention that was used for this particular study. Their purpose was to determine whether the Mozart Effect was for the "visual attentional blink", also known as AB, which provide dynamics of visual attention.

Supiano explains the extreme need for financial literacy in college campuses, where students are adults, yet still have very little financial knowledge or independence. Supiano discusses that without the new initiatives for new finance classes at colleges, non-business students would graduate with very little financial literacy, but in many cases with a lot of debt. This study offers that online courses are very useful tool in gaining financial literacy. The article discusses the state of our financial literacy in the context of family finances. Pickard and Reichelt also give valuable statistics on financial literacy in regard to important demographics such as race and income level. The authors connect the issues with personal finance with the macroeconomic issues, which is very helpful for the reader.

The "New Media" such as Youtube, Facebook, and Myspace today are changing the political scene for young Americans. The technology today allows people to be more involved with politics, as seen during the 2008 election. Now people can watch debates on YouTube or ask questions at town hall meetings with icams connected to your computer, or even "friend" a presidential candidate on Facebook or Myspace. Technology today is promoting political awareness especially with the youth of America, and will make for interesting turnout in the 2008 election. This article explains how technology is being used to promote political awareness in a new way that has never been used before during a presidential election.
