Brettell, Richard R. Impression: Painting Quickly in France, 1860-1890. Williamstown, MA: Yale University Press, 2000. Print. This book holds a lot of information about the Impressionist Movement. The introduction defines what an "impression" is and how it came to name one of the most know art movements. It then goes on to give a brief history about the movement as a whole. After that, each chapter recognizes a famous impressionist painter, like Monet. The chapter about Monet goes into detail about his paintings and how he helped develope the Impressionists.

Rattray, Jacqueline. "Analyzing Surrealist Madness Through the Poetry of Salvador Dalí." Comparative Critical Studies 5.2 (2008), 207-220. This article describes the madness that Salvador Dali possessed and how it effected the Surrealist art movement. This madness was introduced through his art, especially poetry. It describes the term of "paranoiac-critical method" and it's role in Dali's art.

How she offered the people that wore her clothes were given the feeling of "hidden luxury" rather than outwardly ostentatious luxury. The article speaks about how Chanel constantly spoke of femininity rather than feminism. Chanel was part of a movement of designers that made fashion a type of art and expressing yourself. The article also talks about the way that Chanel "stuck it to the man", so to speak. It speaks about her early life and how she got to be the famous designer that she ended her life as

This article includes a brie history includint where Art Deco got its name, some founding designers and the previous artistic movements that founded Art Deco. There is a focus on the cost of an original Art Deco piece today- it could be anywhere up to 3 million dollars. The prices are so high due to the unique materials the art was made out of. The article mentions specific examples of major Art Deco art including the Chrysler Building. There is also mention of how Art Deco is in effect today as well as examplesof current designers.

Talks about how civil rights have had an effect on hip hop. It now is associated with songs and how the transitions have changed it. From when the civil rights movement started to being involved in hip hop with the people in the songs, has had a deep impact on the hip hop movement. It has changed the view of hip hop now.

This review highlights the "high pitch" of the Surrealist movement in the 1930s and the 1940s. It incorporates multiple Surrealist artists, especially Salvador Dali. The author talks about the Surrealist exhibitions and their unique value that were considered to be "ideological spaces." It states that Dali was well-known artist, but eventually he became obsessed with commercialism. At this time period, society was based on consumerism and media advertisement that Dali got caught up in leading to his downfall.

This article explores the topic of politics in the song, "Revolution" by the Beatles. The song was written by John Lennon in 1968, a time of political turmoil. The article compares this song with "Street Fighting Man" by the Rolling Stones. The article explains that the two songs have a similar political message, but the song by the Rolling Stones was more favorable by the public. The article also references some of tragic events in the late 1960s that helped form the message of the song "Revolution," including: The assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, and many anti-Vietnam-war protests. The article analyzes the lyrics and composition of "Revolution" exposing Lennon's skepticism about American politics. The article also gives full lyrics to "Revolution 1" for the White Album. The song shows that the Beatles were anti-war and held a position on revolution. The song had both positive and negative reviews. One of the reviews states that the lyrics were bad, but the music itself was good. An essay cited in the article by Greil Marcus noted the song express freedom and movement and made by a great rock and roll band.

The article goes into to deep detail on the roots of the heav metal movement. Now a mainstream and global culture heavy metal has its roots in the industrial, working-class neighborhoods of post war Birmingham. The youth of Birmingham started drifting away from it's normal ties to the Protestent Church and began seeking their own forms of entertainment. As this went on two of the pioneers of heavy metal were formed in Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. This article shows the link between the geography of Birmingham neighborhoods and the birth of heavy metal.

There are examples of the different mediums Art Deco is demonstrated through such as fashion, architecture and artwork. The article mentions collections that have great examples of Art Deco. This article also mentions how Art Deco touched other countries, which proves that Art Deco was an international hit. This article includes several pictures which is a great way to obtain visual images of Art Deco.

Surrealism has formed and progressed in history from the works of Salvador Dali (one of the core artists within Surrealism) with the hope of building a society based liberty and justice. Surrealism has been said to clarify the questions within this art movement and provide a better understanding of the works done. Though it has been built from the French language, Italian Marxist, Antonio Gramsci, founded the innovative journal and expressed that art is "the historicization and objectification of vision/intuition." Surrealists believe in the possibilities of unrealistic thoughts and illogical behavior that can build up to contemporary ideas in art. The surrealist movement has interpreted an inspiring, yet different interpretation of reality.

This article is a great place to start Art Deco research because it has a large amount of basic information and is therefore a great jumping off point.\n\n

It then goes into what the goals of the Impressionists were and how they sought to complete these goals. For example, to catch a particular landscape scene, Impressionists would paint until the colors changed, and then return another day when the colors were the same. It also talks about the various influences of the impressionists and gives many painting examples of the movement.

Web. 8 Nov. 2010 This article talks about how automatism (a form of ideas/conceptions) has been the main focus of surrealism and all the people in history involved with it since the 1940s. Many artists have chosen to stick to the latest and most common trends and end up writing their own philosophical views for others to focus on while observing the artistic movement. The words of surrealist artists can prove their true appreciation of their own work, but can be misunderstood with writings and literature pertaining to the artists'' work. It has been understood that surrealist work has been divided into three divisions: automatists, families of artistic content, and the fact that little research has been done to provide new facts about Surrealism. A new form of surrealist art that is discussed in this article is called veristic. Veristic is a form of representational art pertaining to images "beyond illusion." Miran Ahn has studied the dream-conception of Surrealism. She relates the unrealistic images of surreal art to contemporary paintings. She believes that some think surrealism is not worthy as a movement in art because of its imaginary images. Ahn believes that traditional contemporary art can be damaging to surrealism because it is seen as a insensible cliché.

Matthews gives a detailed description of the Surrealist Manifesto by Andre Breton. The author goes over the book and what breton was trying to say. You need to understand the Manifesto in order to understand the surrealist movement. This is a very detailed document in which the context of the manifesto is explained. This is a quality source because it contains alot of necessary details in order to understand Surrealism.

Web. 16 Nov. 2010.\n\nThis source focuses on a location that is not usually associated with Art Deco: South Africa. There is mention notonly of the designers of the art, but also of the architects who were actually building the structures. Quotes from architechs about the buidings as well as pictures are included. This article does a great job of using descriptions and imagery to describe the buildings. This article was very interesting because it is not common knowledge that Art Deco was popular in South Africa and it was interesting to learn about the history of the movement there.

Heavy metal has developed from a British fringe movement in the late 1960's to a global mass market consumer good in the early twenty first century. This collection of essays provides a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary look at British heavy metal. It provides a critical analysis of the politcs and ideology behind the lyrics images and performances. The wide range of approaches should provide readers from various disciplines with new and original ideas about the study of this phenomenom of popular culture

Batchelor, David, Briony Fer, Paul Wood. Realism, Rationalism, Surrealism: Art Between the Wars. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1993. Print The authors of this book breakdown the main art forms that breakout during decades of war in the 1930s and 1940s. Among these they discuss Surrealism and how it came to be. They talk about how it changed during the period of intense fighting and death. A lot of detail is put into the authors descriptions. This is a good source because it specifiys events that changed the movement and how they impacted it.

The book on surrealism shows an organized look at some of the most popular paintings from the period. these are made easy to understand by the author who provides background infomation on each painting. these paintings are also presented in alphebitical order and occur in a timeline so you can see when they were painted. there is a breif introduction on the history of the movement in the beginning of the book. i think this is a good source because it describes what the symbolism of these famous paintings mean.
