Inspiring students to think big at the Telefonica Think Big Digital Skills Day - 1 views

    300 students in the UK had the opportunity to learn more about digital skills, such as coding and reporting, away from a classroom setting. They were broken up into small groups and ask to create a report about a certain event. This helped the students collaborate and share their skills in an enviornment they were more comfortable then with students who had similar skills and interests as them.

    Digital Media is always asking for comments on the topics discussed and this article teaches the difference in people who express their opinion and those that are trying to engage in discussion. In a classroom setting he suggests to have students participate in online discussions that make them responsible for showing what they have learned and how to summarize and analyze is properly. Online discussion also allow students to read all the information before saying a comment so that they have listened and taken in everything that has been said. In a classroom she suggest to divide the class into three groups that consist of "first responders," "arguers," and "consensus builders." Also she wants to teach social citation that requires students to cite posts from other students which they support. Online learning also allows students who are afraid to speak up in class to discuss without feeling embarrassed.

    This blog is over a first year teachers proposal to teach a writing course that is digitally based. By teaching this way allows for students to focus more on analyzing, archiving, and transforming into a more modern method. Instead of composing through a word documents, students will use the XML program which does not tell any computer what to do with the information. This program requires students to describe what they are doing as they do it. It also allows students to see all of their editing work and has other advantages that Word does not.

    This article written by Rebecca Frost Davis discusses the use of crowdsourcing in order to create a stronger integration with digital humanities and undergraduate curriculum. Having students work on large scale collaborations allows for professors and scholars teach them knowledge in a more creative way. While crowdsource projects may not cause students to take on professional work in the digital humanities field, it will nonetheless cause them to be more aware of how to use digital humanities in their real lives. Frost confronts the problems of such projects, such as the issue of what kind of project best fits into each class and the time constraints encountered. Moreover, whether the students each have access to computers inside and outside of class. With matters such as these properly organized, Frost encourages crowdsourcing projects for undergraduate students.

    Audrey Altman is set to give a presentation at the University of Iowa entitled, "Attck of the Digital Map! The Wonderful Monsters We Create When Humanities and Technology Collide." In her upcoming presentation Audrey will discuss both historical analysis and digital mapping and the requirements that both bring to the table individually in any given project. Both are individually composed of different aspects and Audrey will try to discuss the pros and cons of both tools when used together simultaneously for one project. Altman will also highlight on the project that she and her undergraduate students have embarked upon this semester that attempts to utilize the two aspects into one project. She will attepmt to delve into the findings, triumphs, ailures, and education gained by she and her students throughout the whole experience.

She is speaking from the context of a project she is heading which is which is involving undergraduate students in to creation of map-based documents for an archive on Iowa Latino/a history.     In a 21st Century Media class an instructor conducted an experiment that allowed the students and professor to live tweet their class session, which she deemed a success. The students had an assigned reading that they were to find a method and be able to prepare it to the class. She informed them what a meaningful tweet would be that would be able to add to the online discussion. The purpose of this assignment was to show how twitter can be used academically. Students in the class were able to multitask by discussing online with each other and also in the classroom setting.

    This blogger was asked to create a website over the papers she had been digitizing. Creating a website entailed knowing how to code it, which she had to learn. Her study shows that having the students build a website adds to their learning process and gives them new ways to think. It also allows the students to collaborate with their teachers that can further engage their research process by adding new questions or finding multiple audiences. The future of Digital Humanities lies within the graduate students and how they are being trained so that they can find better and easier ways to teach the younger generation.

    Matthew G. Kirschenbaum goes into detail about what digital humanites, and how the humanties can be affectively used in the English department. Kirschenbaum gives ideas on how open acces can be useful in the classroom. In his article he explores the different types of free accessible websites that were used in an English clasroom while students were reading Shakespeare to Second life. Students were able to view the entire thirty-two copy extant quarto copies of Hamlet online. This free accesability allowed students to be quized on the material and to get a better understanding of what they were reading. Kirschenbaum believes that the notion of free accesability will help expand the knowledge of English beyond the classroom.
