What is sustainability? | SustainAbility - 1 views

  •
Years ago, we chose the word sustainability to describe societies goals and the belief that its possible. The most common way sustainability has been defined is "the ability to sustain" or "the capacity to endure." It is about our society and its future and the lives we live and everything in it.Sustainability is about being eco-friendly and eco-effective. Society needs to change its marketing strategies.

It seems governments and people are putting effort to achieve sustainability. World Commission on Environment and Development said a sustainable society "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Living sustainably, there would be no waste, and we would use half the amount of energy and materials budget we do now. "We need self-respect, identity, community, love, variety, beauty, challenge, and a purpose in living that is greater than material accumulation."

Ira Sager the journalist of the this article talks about how much money is wasted because of food waste. She goes on to say how many pounds of food is wasted. The number one thing that is thrown away is food scrapes, not plastic or paper. Those food scrapes we could be composting. She stated that wasting food is a cultural habit. We are use to doing it and it is culturally acceptable. Breaking this awful food waste habit then there is going to have to be an adjustment in our society. American Wasteland, a book written by Jonathan Bloom talks about the statistics of the food waste in America. This artice in particular gives us the option to look into even more statistics of how severe the food waste in America has become today. These numbers keep gradually increasing sending our whole stability on Earth out of line. The more food we waste the more food we expect to grow. However the harsh conditions we expect Earth to withstand are apalling; Not only the soil but the atmophere are at risk of causing serious damages to the future of life as we know it

I really enjoyed reading this article because it ties in with food waste what we have been taking about. For an instance I thought they were the same back to going "green" it is good to learn the difference to comprehend both. This is also very helpful for those of us who would like to help but do not know how.
  •
To achieve a sustainable society then food waste must be recycled as opposed to being sent to landfill sites around the country. We all know the problems that our planet is suffering through global warming that is partly aided by the greenhouse gasses that are produced when food waste is sent to landfill and the ensuing fluctuations in temperature that is suffered around the globe.
  •
I really like your comment Norma i Read the same thing but saw it in a different light. But then after reading about your going green comment i thought about how ironic it is that color is being considered a sustainability method. It is great when you can see something from someone else point of view and get more from something you already agreed with.
