At the point where our research began we had seen a new theme of ‘community based localism’ in policy supporting a surge of new activity on the ground.  Very little research had been undertaken to explore the motives and rationales of those involved, to examine the ways in which policy and action at a local level were interconnecting or to understand the profile and pattern of outcomes that were being achieved.

In October 2006, Google announced a commitment to solar energy production and launched the largest solar panel installation to date on a corporate campus in the United States. Google has installed over 90% of the 9,212 solar panels that comprise the 1,600 kilowatt project. SYDNEY (Reuters) - A sun-drenched town in Australia's north hopes to use only solar power in two years after being chosen as the site for a solar thermal power station.

The purchase price of a two megawatt turbine has been pushed up from about $3 million to about $4.4 million as a result. The actual turbines represent from 20 to 50per cent of the final installed cost of any new wind farm, the rest being spent on site investigation, assessment and testing, as well as the installation and infrastructure costs required to connect to the grid, often from remote locations. ...Optimal sites require constant wind speeds of about eight to 10 metres per second. A wind capacity factor of about 35 per cent -- the amount of time the wind actually blows over a year -- is needed to make a site viable.

The electricity certificate system is a market based system to support the expansion of electricity production in Sweden from renewable energy sources and peat. Its objective is to increase, by 2016, the production of electricity from such sources by 17 TWh relative to the production level in 2002. It is part of the country’s overall objective of moving Sweden towards a more ecologically sustainable energy system.

Xtreme Energetics has investigated the possibility of using mechanical trackers to perform the same light-focusing duties as other solar array manufacturers have. However, HP’s transparent transistor can do the job electronically, rather than mechanically, and significantly reduce the costs of such an installation. Such a solar array is known as a concentrating photovoltaic (or CPV) solar array. To date, CPV arrays are fairly expensive and cannot store energy, making them less useful. They also work best in specific sections of the world — those with the highest levels of solar radiation, such as the southwest United States and northern Africa.

The company bundles small businesses that want to buy wind power credits and submits a collective application to a utility. The businesses get better rates, and Clean Currents pockets a 1 percent commission.

Suddenly, “recyclable” seems so old-school. When the FTC held its first workshop reviewing its Green Guides in January, carbon offsets and renewable energy credits were the topic of the day, and the only consensus was that the carbon market is chaotic and difficult to define.
