  • It's not enough to just find the very best solid oxide fuel cell distributed generation system, of which there are actually many to choose from already, which some journalists appear to have forgotten this week.  It's not about the best SOFC technology, it's about supplying kilowatt-hours (or joules of energy, or liters of clean water, etc.) at the right price and in the right way for each application.  And there are often many different ways to supply these commodities.

Traditional solar thermal power plants that use wet cooled technology require millions of gallons of water over time in the process of converting solar rays into clean, renewable power for our community. Southern Nevada received some good economic news last month when Solar Millennium, a division of one of the world's top solar power generators, announced new plans to use a "dry-cooling" system on two proposed solar power plants in Amargosa Valley, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas. This dry-cooling system will use 90 percent less water than previously planned.

  • One of the leading alternatives for producing clean power from coal -- Integrated Combined Cycle Gasification (IGCC) technology faces a precarious future due to rising capital costs and regulatory uncertainty. A process of gasifying coal that allows capture of carbon dioxide emissions, IGCC has tremendous potential for meeting future baseload generation demand but project momentum has slowed dramatically in 2007, according to a new study from Emerging Energy Research (EER). Despite delays or cancellations of several prominent IGCC projects in 2007, 48 projects with a combined capacity of over 25,000 MW remain in the global IGCC pipeline, according to EER.
