This article is introducing the development of scoring rubric.One purpose of this article is to provide clear definitions of the terms "validity" and "reliability" and illustrate these definitions through examples. A second purpose is to clarify how these issues may be addressed in the development of scoring rubrics. Scoring rubrics are descriptive scoring schemes that are developed by teachers or other evaluators to guide the analysis of the products and/or processes of students' efforts

The topic of future trends in technology for schools involves an incredible amount of inherent change, especially in reference to technology capabilities. This site is an introduction to many of the aspects of technology change that will impact education in the next few years. The goal of the site is to give administrators a glimpse into the rich technology resources available on the Web. Using this site for "just-in-time" references to issues that all administrators will or are currently facing, will assist districts in managing change through research and understanding.  Some current pivotal issues include a clear understanding of possible affects of technology tools will have on learning styles, facilities planning, student achievement, budgeting, and teacher preparation.

This is a link to the full-text research article authored by Glenda A. Gunter, Robert F. Kenny and Erik H. Vick. The title is "Taking educational games seriously: using the RETAIN model to design endogenous fantasy into standalone educational games". The authors argue that for educational games to be effective, a new design paradigm needs to be utilized. They recommend the RETAIN design and evaluation model. The article is published in Education Tech Research Dev (2008) 56:511-537 and the DOI is 10.1007/s11423-007-9073-2.

An awesome resource to share with students! As a teacher I regularly refer to Bloom's Taxonomy when I am planning or developing questions for my students to ponder and respond to. This resource provides a great explanation of the thinking processes that the learner should experience at each of the levels in the taxonomy. The chart offers sample questions in very student-friendly language. This will be helpful as I encourage my students to stretch their questioning and thinking from the knowledge level through the higher levels. 

This research article provides an overview of how transformative learning experiences can be created through instructional design.  The aim is to use instruction to make learning more experiential, personally relevant and transformative to students.  The authors explain a framework for providing transformative learning experiences, including several indicators that fall into the categories of developing personal meaning, competence with the subject and relationships.  The authors also present guidelines for designing these experiences, including applying design fundamentals, crafting the learning experience and teaching and facilitating to inspire learning. Great article about an emerging piece of technology hardware. It made me wonder about the new types of hardware and software we will be using in the near future. The "Day Made of Glass2" video is about 6 min. long and worth watching. I saw the original "Day Made of Glass" video in 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Cf7IL_eZ38 (also about 6 min.) The 2nd one is great because it shows how students and teachers can use the new technology. Enjoy! :-)

Although research studies in education show that use of technology can help student learning, its use is generally affected by certain barriers. In this paper, we first identify the general barriers typically faced by K-12 schools, both in the United States as well as other countries, when integrating technology into the curriculum for instructional purposes, namely: (a) resources, (b) institution, (c) subject culture, (d) attitudes and beliefs, (e) knowledge and skills, and (f) assessment. We then describe the strategies to overcome such barriers: (a) having a shared vision and technology integration plan, (b) overcoming the scarcity of resources, (c) changing attitudes and beliefs, (d) conducting professional development, and (e) reconsidering assessments. Finally, we identify several current knowledge gaps pertaining to the barriers and strategies of technology integration, and offer pertinent recommendations for future research.

In The National Geographic Kids Blog, a group of kids selected by the National Geographic staff share their thoughts and experiences. This is a great blog for kids to follow and be able to read about things that interest them and what other kids think. Teachers can use this as a resource to introduce kids to safe and educational places on the internet that are interesting to them as well. I found this in the "Online Safety" section of Kids.gov, accessed via the publisher companion site of our textbook.
