Ways to promote and teach digital citizenship to our students!

I am currently exploring ways in which technology can enhance the learning environment and striving to define what it means to be creatively productive in a digital age.

The Visual Understanding Environment (VUE) is an Open Source project based at Tufts University. The VUE project is focused on creating flexible tools for managing and integrating digital resources in support of teaching, learning and research. VUE provides a flexible visual environment for structuring, presenting, and sharing digital information.

To stop giving homework, you have to change what your classroom looks like. Move away from a teacher-centered classroom to a more student-centered model. Start by creating a really good classroom website. Use your classroom website to disseminate directions. Students walk in the door, go to the website and get to work. Daily organize the agenda, which includes the directions for tasks, onto your classroom website.  ... Directions can be written, visual graphics, short videos or short animations. If students are doing the work digitally they are able to receive immediate feedback. This is better.  ...  I use Quia.com to create some of my digital independent practice, however, there are a lot of great tools that teachers can use.

The Flip camera is great for all types of projects in science and math - at any grade level. Flip cameras are small handheld video cameras that can record 30 or 60 minutes worth of video. Besides a teacher's record, the videos provide a digital record for parents and administrators to show a student's successes or areas which need improvement.

New technology provides sexy alternatives to older methods of instruction and assessment. In the same conference, I spoke about my "podcast year" - when, as a first year teacher, I discovered the joy of digital microphones. Every piece of creative writing was recorded, an activity that ate up entire class periods. By the time I reached a unit where it actually made sense to capture student voice (speeches), the kids were ready to fight me. I too had allowed myself to be distracted.
