    Quick: what was the most widely-used form of media in 2008? If you guessed Internet news sites, blogs, or social networks, you'd be way off. Network TV news (NBC, CBS, ABC) is still used by the highest percentage of adult Internet users, with local newspapers and local TV news occupying the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively, in a recently released survey from Ketchum. While old media is still on top, the trends in the survey, which has been conducted each of the last three years, point to a familiar story: media consumption habits are quickly changing. That said, some forms of new media are performing much better than others. For example: - Blogs are now used by 24% of Internet users, up from 13% in 2006 - Social networks are now used by 26% of Internet users, up from 17% in 2006 - Videocasts are now used by 11% of Internet users, up from 6% in 2006 Slower growers include: - RSS feeds: growing from 5 to 7 percent - Podcasts: growing from 5 to 7 percent - Business news sites: flat at 8 percent

But school leaders are still searching for the best models to mine the data to discover the best instructional methods for students, the report says. "Data should be part of a feedback loop used to drive improvement at every level of the education system. This study helps us understand the kinds of data that need to be available for teachers and school leaders if they're going to use data to improve their practice," said Carmel Martin, assistant secretary for the Office of Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development. In "Use of Education Data at the Local Level: From Accountability to Instructional Improvement," researchers surveyed officials from 529 districts, conducted in-depth site visits to 36 schools in 12 districts leading the way in data usage, and analyzed secondary data from a survey of over 6,000 teachers to obtain a national picture of current data use practices at the local-level.

    Key findings from the NCLE survey, explored in more detail in the body of the report, yield the following conclusions about how US educators are currently working together to meet rising literacy expectations and how best to support them going forward. Literacy is not just the English teacher's job anymore. Working together is working smarter. But schools aren't structured to facilitate educators working together. Many of the building blocks for remodeling literacy learning are in place. Effective collaboration needs systemic support.

Most of the respondents were experienced classroom teachers and specialist staff in public schools at all levels (elementary, middle, high) of schooling. Could this be used to promote blogging/texting/chatting standards instruction in schools? If schools don't teach students to use social networking and web 2.0 tools effectively and efficiently, who will? Of interest is this quote: "A considerable number of educators and children's advocates worry that James Billington, the Librarian of Congress, was right when he recently suggested that young Americans' electronic communication might be damaging 'the basic unit of human thought -- the sentence.'" This seems a little bit like saying if teens got a hold of new type of watch, they might damage the space-time continuum.
