This video describes COP and how they work.
  •
This video packs a lot of information into 4 minutes. It provides a great overview of communities of practice. I like how it delves into what the ideal model would look like.
  •
I like how this video goes beyond just the definition of a CoP and into why they are important, who is talking about them, what criteria is needed for one, etc.

TEDxNYED - George Siemens - 03/06/10 - 1 views

  •
In this TEDx talk by George Siemens he discusses connections. He begins to discuss this through his own personal background. He pushes inherently through his talk for a change in education. He pushes that the importance of education is connectedness and implies that education currently is inhibiting this connectedness. He says that many platforms for students to be connected are often locked down which I can also say I have found to be true. He parts the talk that he believes the primary task of education is connectedness and that we need to collapse education down to this to cause our students to become better members of society.

Thanks! @kcastello Siemens has such a cool perspective on connectedness and such an amazing way of explaining his ideas. My favorite is his comment: "Education is not about creating better Googlers."
  •
Great resource! I like his comment that transparency makes us all instructors and the concept of bringing it all down to connections and connectedness.
  •
I think Tim said it best up there... it's best to get information from a key contributor to connectivism. We cannot expect our students not to connect. We are lucky to be where we are in education right now.

What is a PLN - Marc-André Lalande's take - 1 views

  •
This defines and simplifies the idea of a Personal Learning Network
  •
A quick PLN overview that describes many of the aspects of what we do here in this class. The presenter offers many insights on how to be a member of a PLN, and some of the tools that are available to us. I like that he tells me that I can change levels of participation whenever I want, and should feel free to just lurk if preferred.

Connected Educators - 0 views

  •
Many educators talk about the benefits of being part of a PLN. They emphasize that while they are interacting with people and not feeling alone while gathering ideas and sharing feelings, they can connect or disconnect anytime they want. It is the choice of the educator to determine the level of involvement they want to provide. The educators in this video seem extremely comfortable being members of these networks. Connecting and collaborating are important skills. Being able to choose when to connect and be part of a professional network, allows freedom for educators to continue their learning forever.

A cute powtoon video discussing the benefits of Connectivism as a learning theory. In the video she explains that an a advantage of connectivism is that the learner can connect with people around the world and understand different perspectives. Connectivism also encourages critical thinking and indepth examination of a topic. The important thing is not to know everything about a topic, but to know where to go to find the information.
  •
This is an excellent resource! The video gives us a very nice summary and delves into the implications of a connected world and where we're living today. I am likely to use this video later on.
  •
I appreciate the visual components of this resource and third person example of "Amy's" usage of connectivsim. Using Amy as an example this video allowed us to see the overall picture of connectivism theory as well as how it would look when being used by a student, switching our perspective of the theory from that of the teacher to that of the student.

George Siemens - Connectivism: Socializing Open Learning - YouTube - 1 views

  •
In this video discussion on open social learning, connectivism theorist, George Siemens discusses transparency and openness in connected learning. He emphasizes the importance of the actual connections that learners are permitted to make over the networks themselves. He asks a thought-provoking question, "Do we have the most diverse opportunities at the at the hands of our students to connect with individuals, ideas, and thinkers that they're interested in?" He points out that transparency makes our learning visual to others, and because of this, new opportunities and experiences are made possible through connections.
  •
I love the question he asks. We might as well embrace the tools that we have to improve the amount of opportunities there are for students and teachers. I love that these networks allow us to show that our process is working. When I've learned something, especially in these MET courses, I love that everyone else can see it and perhaps weigh in with their opinions.

How to build your PLN - 0 views

  •
I love that this video makes it very clear that you don't actually have to know anyone in your PLN. Now that we are so interconnected, the people that we learn from can be totally dispersed throughout the world. This presenter emphasizes that these networks are OURS.

I know that Dr. Gerstein didn't really want any how-tos... but this one is so good.

The networked student model for construction of personal learning environments: Balanci... - 3 views

  •
This article explores how to find a balance between teacher control and student autonomy in personal learning environments. I like the author's observation that students are "networked learners in training." Page 3 has a networked teacher model, while page 4 of the article shows a diagram model of a networked student. A networked student uses constructivism based on experiences and social interactions. Meaningful learning is made up of knowledge construction, conversation, articulation, collaboration and reflection. The remainder of the article details a test case with networked learning. And there is a link to a YouTube presentation of the project, at the end of the conclusion.
  •
Thank you for sharing this article. The diagrams painted a good picture of the networked teacher and student. It was interesting the direction the arrows were pointing in both pictures!
