The NOAA Virtual Island in SciLands - 1 views

I had the opportunity to visit this world as well.. I did not ride the plane, but I did go down in the submarine. It was great to maneuver it around and see the underwater world. I plan to go back and check out the Tsunami. This site would really benefit students who are used to only minimal weather patterns. For example: We live in the desert. We get extreme hot and extreme cold. The students do not often understand the true devastation of a Tsunami or hurricane. Now if it simulated an earthquake they may be able to relate. Now there's an idea!

I was looking into science locations and came across this great interactive site: Synthetic Biology Interactive (SBI) is an educational resource for students new to synthetic biology. This world was produced as a project of the University of Calgary IGEM Team.
I started my journey falling down a slide into the depths of a bacteria filled ecosystem. Dr. Squidmund Freud narrates part of the adventure for me. Wild E. Coli are among the creatures taking over the kingdom. I am supposed to find something to stop them. A note card from Arnold Squidnegger provides information on killing the Bacteria.
This is one of the most fun and interactive learning environments that I have encountered. The easy to follow path, the tour guide, the helpful note cards all aid in understanding the journey. It is a colorful and wonderful world with real life lessons and name parities. My students would love learning about bacteria in this environment!

EDTECH ISLAND, Boise State
Our group's overall impressions: This site is built from Edtech colleagues at Boise State University. It has multiple resources for teachers just beginning to meld their understanding of Educational Technology with the virtual world and 2nd life possibilities. Edtech Island is well established with good scenery and appears to have been active for many years.
Although I have only completed day 1 of the 8 day tutorial, it appears to have a great self-guided learning tool for understanding construction and it is complete with all their resources.

This site has multiple buildings specific to certain areas of instruction. ... ex: Teacher Education in Virtual Worlds, etc.
Check out the beautiful lodge http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/EdTech/65/205/24
There is alot of great FREE take-always.. including textures and colors... and they greet you with a free gift bag!
Also visit Cybrary Square:

This appears to be a community of buildings (possibly built by edtech students) each building with a unique theme... Special Education, K-8 education, K-8 art, Gold Rush, Job Opportunities building etc.
There is much to learn from this land. As teachers learning.. you can collect tools to help with your world design. There are opportunities for collecting facts, taking quizzes, games, links to other resources, treasure hunts, and videos.
Some of the best things available are the unique organization of the site with pathways and building signs for easy navigation. The FREE teacher tools are exceptional and they even have an avatar to greet you.

The others take this town seriously. I showed up in my normal attire and was banned. I had to put in with a request from the general to be allowed back to town. One of the deputies showed me around and attempted to explain the bulls eye game interface thingy necessary to be allowed to walk the wicked streets of Amiville.
I am not much for role play. With our studies, who has the time? But, immersing myself into the virtual context has provided insightful considerations for learning opportunities. What if I was a rabbit competing for resources and avoiding predators. What an amazing lesson for food chains & webs.
Consider what students could create if asked to make grammar lands full of the Noun people, Verb people... etc. Creating dinner parties among characters could get interesting.
