Rachel S. Smith of New Media Consortium demonstrates how she uses an iPad to visually record presentations (think doodling!) She demonstrates narrated QT video using Brushes and iMovie. GREAT ideas for presentation development! For EDTEC572 students: I KNOW the semester is over.. But some of you will think this is really nifty :)

College 2.0: Teachers Without Technology Strike Back - Technology - The Chronicle of Hi... - 0 views

  •
A discussion of appropriate use AND NON USE of technology in the art and craft of teaching in higher education. Good discussion starter for instructional design and tech integration. Examples of when technology (ie. tools, gadgets and trends) did not result in "better" learning.  A reminder that we DESIGN instruction intentionally - not according to the latest fad.

Facebook | Videos from Educators using Facebook: Facebook for Educators [HQ] - 0 views

  •
Facebook video:  Facebook for educators.  Great 8 minute video introducing FB to educators and showing important tips and best practices.  Easy view. Available from within FB.
  •
This is a great video! Although facebook is blocked at our schools, among other amazing web resources, students can still access material from home. I'm thinking that if a teacher creates enough buzz about a class facebook, students will get involved with it at home. Teachers can even give participation points for students who post. This brings up a question of equity. .. What about students who don't have computers or internet access at home? My answer to that is for students to network with family and friends, and find someone who will let them use the internet. Many public libraries have internet access. Of course this is coming from a high school teacher point of view. Love the video! But I still need to get familiar with all of the settings and privacy controls on there before I use it in class. :)

One teacher's experience using Facebook and Twitter in the classroom.

Great ideas for Facebook and Twitter. However, these two resources are on a lengthy list of things blocked and banned by my district. A continual frustration for me as a teacher is how often decisions are made based on fear, not on policy. The district isn't afraid of the resource, they are afraid of the parent phone call.

Pew Research: Wealthy Have Laptops, the Poor Have Cell Phones - PCWorld - 1 views

  •
Pew Research indicates poor and drop outs trend towards cell phones for information. (No surprise).
  •
What are instructional design considerations to keep in mind when desiging mobile learning for pay-as-you-go learning populations?  What are accessible m-learning activities for these learners?
  •
Clearly, designers should strive to create resources that are as easy to access and use on a cell phone platform as they are on a laptop if they hope to reach these populations. Regarding the high school dropouts: I'm inclined to think there is more going on here than just money issues. There might be a perception that cell phones are "cool" while using a laptop is nerdy and bookish.

Philip Zimbardo on "The Secret Powers of Time" - Boing Boing - 4 views

Fascinating example of using whiteboard graphics to animate or illustrate main points of a short lecture.  How is this strategy MORE effective than other graphic strategies?

I really enjoyed this graphic presentation as the artist was clever and skilled. I could see exactly how it was produced. Hmmm....
  •
Cathy, this video is fascinating both for its content and its technique. Is this instructor such a great artist, or does he collaborate with an artist, sound editor, etc. to produce these videos? The topic reminded me of conversations I've had with friends who live in Spain. They tell me Americans are always too busy and that in Spain if you are late for an appointment no one criticizes you. They assume you had an important visit with someone along the way.
  •
Regarding content: Yes, interesting thoughts on the implications of culture! As an instructional designer, I begin to consider how one might design instruction for various cultural groups (In fact, that is covered in the non-COMET version of 572.) Regarding graphics: I don't know if the narrator and artist are one person. For more on the concept of instructive doodles, look for the book "The Back of the Napkin". The premise is that anyone can develop enough skill to illustrate ideas!

The Reality of ICT in the Classroom - 1 views

  •
This article seems to counter a lot of what we hoped: It indicates that giving computers to students may lead to lower academic performance. Hmmm. We may need to look at the methodology behind this study.
  •
I agree with you Sonya. I also think that the article does not state how students are expected to use the computers. Are teachers being trained? I think more variables are needed to support the claim that technology is not "making a dent" in education. It's like giving a kid a baseball bat and expect him to hit a homerun. The kid needs coaching, preferably from someone who knows what they are talking about!
