College 2.0: Teachers Without Technology Strike Back - Technology - The Chronicle of Hi... - 0 views

  •
A discussion of appropriate use AND NON USE of technology in the art and craft of teaching in higher education. Good discussion starter for instructional design and tech integration. Examples of when technology (ie. tools, gadgets and trends) did not result in "better" learning.  A reminder that we DESIGN instruction intentionally - not according to the latest fad.

Pew Research: Wealthy Have Laptops, the Poor Have Cell Phones - PCWorld - 1 views

  •
Pew Research indicates poor and drop outs trend towards cell phones for information. (No surprise).
  •
What are instructional design considerations to keep in mind when desiging mobile learning for pay-as-you-go learning populations?  What are accessible m-learning activities for these learners?
  •
Clearly, designers should strive to create resources that are as easy to access and use on a cell phone platform as they are on a laptop if they hope to reach these populations. Regarding the high school dropouts: I'm inclined to think there is more going on here than just money issues. There might be a perception that cell phones are "cool" while using a laptop is nerdy and bookish.

Philip Zimbardo on "The Secret Powers of Time" - Boing Boing - 4 views

Fascinating example of using whiteboard graphics to animate or illustrate main points of a short lecture.  How is this strategy MORE effective than other graphic strategies?

I really enjoyed this graphic presentation as the artist was clever and skilled. I could see exactly how it was produced. Hmmm....

Cathy, this video is fascinating both for its content and its technique. Is this instructor such a great artist, or does he collaborate with an artist, sound editor, etc. to produce these videos? The topic reminded me of conversations I've had with friends who live in Spain. They tell me Americans are always too busy and that in Spain if you are late for an appointment no one criticizes you. They assume you had an important visit with someone along the way.

Regarding content: Yes, interesting thoughts on the implications of culture! As an instructional designer, I begin to consider how one might design instruction for various cultural groups (In fact, that is covered in the non-COMET version of 572.) Regarding graphics: I don't know if the narrator and artist are one person. For more on the concept of instructive doodles, look for the book "The Back of the Napkin". The premise is that anyone can develop enough skill to illustrate ideas!

  •
An overview is provided for how to use search engine tools designed specifically to find pictures for teachers and students to use in the classroom.

This is really helpful for me. I use photos in my classes all the time. I particularly like the Picishare site. The search results are interesting; not always what I'd expect, but a great adventure.

Do You Need An Instructional Design Degree? » The Rapid eLearning Blog - 1 views

  •
Tom lays out perspectives/arguments very nicely. In many ways, I think it boils down to the person him or herself.  Some folks have the discipline, drive and contextual experiences/collegial interactions that would make more autonomous 'self study' very effective.  Others... not so much. I think in this day and age, this issue presents itself in many professions.

visual recording on the iPad, illustrated - Ninmah Meets World - 1 views

Rachel S. Smith of New Media Consortium demonstrates how she uses an iPad to visually record presentations (think doodling!) She demonstrates narrated QT video using Brushes and iMovie. GREAT ideas for presentation development! For EDTEC572 students: I KNOW the semester is over.. But some of you will think this is really nifty :)

PLEASE! Keep adding great resources to our diigo group! I use these ideas all the time for inspiration and new things. Thank you so much, Cathy!

iPad App: Mathboard - 0 views

  •
For all you math teachers and parents, MathBoard may help your student learn to love math. MathBoard is appropriate for all ages from kindergarten (with simple addition and subtraction problems) to elementary school, where learning multiplication and division can be a challenge. You can control the range of numbers you want to work with, the amount of questions you want to answer and length of time allowed per quiz. Kids will likely love it. Even if this were merely a calculator, students would be lining up to play with it because it's on an iPad. The fact that it comes through on its promise makes it all the more useful. The random problem generator is particularly handy for creating quizzes. Gone are the days of picking through or creating your own problems and pasting them into a quiz. MathBoard does all of this for up to 250 problems per quiz. Can I use it in my classroom? This tool is designed specifically for classroom use. Students can use it to work on new math techniques, and teachers can use it to generate homework and quizzes. It's a perfect match. I'm providing a link to a youtube demo above. Please click on it and judge for yourself.
