The Teaching Style Inventory is a 40-question survey to help quantify your teaching style according to Grasha's theories of teaching style.     Teaching with Style is a book that can be accessed for free using this link. Written by an award-winning psychologist and teaching professor, the book was created to enable the reader to discover about himself/herself as a teacher and a learner. In addition to content about Grasha's well-known teaching style theories, the book discusses "clusters" of teaching, and different methods and ideas for teaching based on your cluster.

    A more manageable resource than Grasha's entire book. This 8-page paper that appeared in "College Teaching" essentially outlines chapter 4 of his larger work "Teaching with Style". It includes the 5 teacher styles, 4 teacher style clusters, types of teaching methods associated with each cluster, as well as factors to consider when choosing a teaching method. It also contains more of the details and background in Grasha's research on teaching styles.

      The authors and researchers aim to develop and establish a learning style tool specific to pharmacy, as no previous tool exists.  The foundation is derived from other well-known learning theories, including Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (LSI) and the Canfield Learning Style.  Through the use of focus groups, the PILS was derived and assessed by the developers. This tool serves as the only pharmacy-specific tool identified through a literature search.

    Follow up to my last post, this article written about medical school curriculum explains the differences within the two learning styles (Traditional vs. PBL). Studies show that a combination of both styles is the best way to teach and will produce a student who can excel on tests as well as on rounds/work area.

    Spectrum of teaching styles was originally developed by Muska Mosston for physical education, but can be applied to any type of teaching. The website provides detailed information about each teaching style in the spectrum, further explaining each in terms of the teacher's subject matter objectives and behavior objectives. I find this theory to be quite specific about each type of style, which can be useful for both new teachers and teachers who are looking for new ways to teach.

      The authors and researchers compare the dominant typologies of student pharmacists and faculty using the Pharmacists' Inventory of Learning Styles (PILS).  Approximately 300 student pharmacists and 60 faculty members at a college of pharmacy were enrolled and their dominant PILS type determined.  Their analysis compares not only students to faculty, but also secondary outcomes, including year of school and gender.  This study serves to indicate that the PILS has been used to evaluate pharmacist learning styles and its application to real-world practice.

      This research attempted to determine whether a learning style "match" between students and preceptors lead to improved learning outcomes (e.g. evaluation of student or preceptor performance).  Most students and preceptors were "assimilators" (aka "thinkers") based on the PILS questionnaire.  However, "matching" learning styles of preceptors and students didn't improve learning outcomes.
