Why Google+ Is an Education Game Changer - Education - GOOD - 10 views

  •
It's been a week since I snagged a Google+ invite, and while it's fun to hit the reset button on my personal social media life, what I'm really interested in is how the service is going to impact teaching and learning. There's a good chance that Google+ is going to become a powerful communication and collaboration tool in the classroom. In fact, it could end up being a serious education game changer.

Women of Google+ - 8 views

  •
I started to collect a Google+ circle of women-only (aptly named 'Women of G+') and the idea of connecting with early adopter women in a new social networking platform is growing larger in my mind by the minute. I find it stimulating and refreshing to have a list of highly intelligent women on G+ to read every morning over coffee. Thanks for letting me take a peek into your brilliant minds.

Third of us baffled by technology - Sunday Mercury - Weird Science - 0 views

  • Communications technology is changing the way that society interacts and now, with the explosion in personal communications devices, wifi and increasing broadband speeds, is a great time to start charting this change.
  • The research has shown that communications technology is seen by most as a positive tool but there are examples where people are not managing usage as well as they could be - it is not necessarily the amount but the way in which it is used.
  •
A third of people admit to feeling overwhelmed by technology and say they want to reduce the amount of time they spend on their phones and computers, according to a survey.

To get ourselves in the mood for this show, we asked CNET fan (and Academy Award winner) Richard Dreyfuss if he'd help us out by doing a dramatic reading of the Apple EULA. He said yes. So, without further ado, we present to you,"

Ugly font may improve learning › News in Science (ABC Science) - 4 views

  • "It's important to remember that a good third of our visual cortex ... is devoted to literacy, reading. This 5000-year-old cultural invention has usurped a huge chunk of the brain," he said. "One of the trade-offs of this is that people who can read are a little worse at 'quote-unquote' reading the natural world and remembering objects such as plants and animals, because so much of our visual vortex is devoted to letters, syllables and words."
  •
Inspired by comic strips and hated by font designers, new research suggests Comic Sans may help people remember what they read.

While IT pros scoff, Google Chromebooks will likely seduce businesses | TechRepublic - 1 views

  • The time is right for a thin client solution to replace the overcomplicated mess that is corporate PC deployment and management. Google is right about that, and there’s a growing legion of CIOs — still of a vocal minority of about 30% — that are clamoring to reduce IT spending by moving to thin clients or desktop virtualization. Google’s solution could give many of them exactly what they need.

"Google's Chromebook for Business program could entice a lot of organizations to consider ditching Windows for Chrome OS. Learn why and see how it could save big money."

"Scientists admit they'll be forced to throw out valuable data because today's computers aren't powerful enough to process all the information that will be generated by a proposed new super telescope. The planned $2.3 billion dollar Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be the largest and most sophisticated radio telescope ever built."

The problem with the iPad and Facebook « Esko Kilpi on Interactive Value Crea... - 3 views

  • Reach together with symmetry and equality were the things that made the Internet such a radical social innovation.
  • The real genius of Napster was the way it made collaboration automatic. By default, a consumer of files was also a producer of files for the network.
  • The big challenge for many organizations is to do things in a much, much simpler and more responsive way. The sad truth is that it is easier for managers to grasp the threat of competition than the risk of simply becoming obsolete.
  •
I believe that Napster gave us a glimpse of the future. The architecture it pioneered is going to be a viable model for the agile value constellations of the very near future. Client-server is not the only truth and Facebook is (just) a modern version of a Telco. Facebook is not the same as the Internet.
