Movie Making and literacy skills | illegal harmonies - 5 views

  • But beyond that againg there is the ideas of student centered learning. The kids are creating personal, meanigful things not another task set by the teacher. The teacher is acting merely as the facilitator, guiding the learning to a deeper place. The ownership of the product gives the students motivation and a greater sense of enjoyment which always enhances learning. In my role as teacher for this project I introduced the idea, showed them some simple concepts and ten basically handed it over to them, always assisting when needed and giving guidance when appropriate
  • Creative expression is one of if not the most iportant part of life.  Humans have a desire to create and if we can use ICT to better enable children to do that while effectivly communicating their creations to others than that is fantastic.

Awesome blog post on Movie making and literacy skills. Some great pedagogy happening with this group of students. I really like Kynan's philosophy of letting the students learn rather than intervening with teacher direction. Final cut express is a rather complicated piece of software but it looks like these kids have eaten it for breakfast

"Reflective practice occurs when teachers step back and evaluate the learning environment. The teacher looks at himself or herself. They ask, "How can this be better?" They identify what went right or wrong. It occurs both during the learning events and after."

Teacher training goes high tech | Articles | Pearson | The Learning Curve - 0 views

  •
"Taylor Bousfield is practicing her teaching skills by leading a seventh-grade science class. She asks the students to give examples of a "solid," and gets a gamut of responses: the boy in the front row answers immediately; students in the back don't participate or fool around. Ms Bousfield draws the students out in turn and affirms their responses. All in all, a typical day of teacher training - except that the students are computer-generated avatars."

eSchool News - Teachers' digital media use on the rise - 1 views

Interesting article commenting on the results of the annual "PBS Digitally Inclined" report indicating '76 percent of K-12 educators said they use digital media in the classroom, up from 69 percent in 2008. Of those teachers, 80 percent are frequent or regular users'. This type of data is of value to teacher librarians when reviewing their role within schools. If you don't have a focus on multimedia, here is proof that it's time to have a closer look.

Study: $75M teacher pay initiative did not improve achievement | GothamSchools - 2 views

  •
New York City's heralded $75 million experiment in teacher incentive pay - deemed "transcendent" when it was announced in 2007 - did not increase student achievement at all, a new study by the Harvard economist Roland Fryer concludes. "If anything," Fryer writes of schools that participated in the program, "student achievement declined." Fryer and his team used state math and English test scores as the main indicator of academic achievement.

Victorian Teacher Notebook Scandal - 2 views

  • As you can imagine, conspiracy theories abound. The department lost its previous Mac loving secretary with the change of government, and many worry that the department techs, who have always tried to pretend Macs just don’t exist, are now having their way and trying to push them out of the system altogether.
  •
But after a change to a conservative government that has a very poor track record when it comes to supporting public education, Victorian teachers are slowly awakening to a very different landscape. Perhaps the most rude awakening has occurred by way of the latest notebook lease offer from DEECD.
