"Cyber-bullying, update-addiction, sexting - from the perspective of a parent raising a ''digital native'' child, social media seems fraught with dangers. But new research suggests the risks inherent in social media use by younger generations might be overblown. danah boyd, assistant research professor at Harvard and principal researcher for Microsoft Research - like k.d.lang, she prefers the lower case - has completed a large-scale study on how US teenagers use the internet in general, and social media in particular. Her book is called It's Complicated, and is the result of in-depth interviews with scores of teens over an eight-year period."

People used to say that Steve Jobs was able to create a Reality Distortion Field when he spoke. He had the ability to convince those around him to believe in just about anything, which was both good (they were motivated to achieve things they thought they couldn't) and bad (Jobs would sometimes recall events differently than others did - some might call that lying).

"Google bought Nest for $3.2bn (£1.8bn) earlier this year despite the fact it only had two relatively niche products on sale. The search firm's chairman Eric Schmidt described the acquisition at the time as "an important bet" on intelligent devices for the home that were "infinitely more useable" than existing kit. "Parents have taken over Facebook and, to a lesser extent, Twitter. This has sent device-laden students flocking to social media apps such as Instagram, SnapChat and Yik Yak, and the shift has created new challenges for administrators trying to root out cyberbullying and threats of violence. Garnering the most concern in many districts is Yik Yak, a free app created in 2013 that connects users within a 10-mile radius to a message board, and allows anyone to read and post anonymously. The app, meant for college students, is blocked on most K12 campuses thanks to technology called geofencing."

I presented twice at a great two day conference in Melbourne called 'Arresting Audiences'. The irony of the title not lost on this writer as the real intention of the event run by Film Victoria (a traditional film funding organisation) was commendable - finally focus on 'users', 'watchers', 'participants' aka as old school 'audiences'. Most of the talks explored new marketing, basic demography and obligatory future trends with a couple of inspirational 'write for your inner audience' highlight talks from the likes of Jane 'buffy/BSG' Espenson, but I was asked to look at the social and transmedia aspects that affect and impact on audiences/communities so below is:

DeweyDigger.com is a visual search portal where you can "Explore knowledge via the Dewey Decimal Classification; just clickety-click."  On the splash page you are presented with the main Dewey Numbers and an ever-changing interactive panorama showing images from these listings.  Next you need to click on an image to access a cloud tag of terms in that call number.  From there you can select a tag and then select a search or research tool to locate information.

Nike has turned the city of London into a game board for a two-week competition called the GRID which the shoe manufacturer hopes will ultimately encourage young people who already jog for exercise to start identifying themselves as "runners."

ZuluPad is a notepad on crack. It's a place to jot down class notes, appointments, to-do lists, favorite websites, annotated bookmarks, pretty much anything you can think of. The great thing about ZuluPad is that it combines the best parts of a notepad with the best parts of a wiki, a concept made popular by Wikipedia. The basic idea has been called a personal wiki or a desktop wiki.

Martin Dougiamas (@moodler) and Tomaz Lasic (@lasic) hosted a quick demo and call to action for the Mt. Orange School demo site right before Christmas.  As a follow up Tomaz has provided the presentation recording in Elluminate, his slide notes and the full presentation from that day http://www.twitlonger.com/show/7m04ig. The presentation focused on providing an overview of what was currently possible with the Mt. Orange School, Moodle's new demonstration site where you can get a feel for what's possible with Moodle 2.0 and well trained teaching staff.  In additional Tomaz explained that the school site in its entirety is available for download so that users can dive in deeper and play with the settings and features without affecting the live site or causing undue administration. The presentation recording is about 1 hour and the Google Docs presentation has a wealth of information included in it's speakers notes.  Be sure to check out both if you're considering Moodle 2.0 this year.
