Transport and logistics MOSI-T is active in the field of transportation and logistics management. Prof. Dr. Cathy Macharis is in charge of MOSI-T. She is specialized in the application of socio-economic evaluation methods in the field of transportation and logistics. Among other things, the MAMCA (Multi-Actor, Multi-Criteria Analysis) method was further elaborated and refined so it could be applied in the field of transportation and logistics. People Publications Projects Links   MOSI-T's research can be divided into four main research areas. In all cases, an integrated and policy-orientated approach is aimed at. 1. Mobility policy The projects on mobility policy cover the socio-economic evaluation of policy measures or strategies. This evaluation is done by way of a cost-benefit analysis or a multi-actor, multicriteria analysis. Examples of these projects are the evaluation of the implementation of tradable mobility rights (2002-2003), the socio-economic impact of free public transport (2004-2005) and the socio-economic impact of the expansion of the hub-activities of the DHL courier at Brussels-Zaventem airport (2004-2005). In addition, in 2006, a project was started to investigate the impact of the aviation sector on climate changes and formulate recommendations with regard to policy possibilities in this area. 2. Transportation infrastructure We also have a policy approach for the socio-economic evaluation of large infrastructural projects, such as the renovation of the Royers lock (2004) and the economic developmental possibilities of the Dender (2004-2005). We take into account all decision-making criteria for the investments and, if necessary, analyse them by way of operational research models. Other examples of projects from this research domain include the Master plan for the harbour of Brussels (2002-2004), the Economic Development Study for the harbour of Antwerp (2005) and the development and estimation of the market-share model for Western Europ

London's Exhibition Road Transforms Into Shared Space for Pedestrians and CarsNovember 11, 2011   The issue of bike lanes in New York City has sparked numerous debates, sending right-leaning journalists on a crusade against DOT commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and pitting Williamsburg hipsters against their Hasidic Jew neighbors. While those with a more Dutch-minded vision for the city view bike lanes as a step towards shared public space, planners in London have taken quite the opposite route towards the same goal. According to The Guardian, after 18 months of renovation, London's Exhibition Road has been overhauled from a traditional sidewalk-and-road arrangement into a continuous smooth surface to be shared by pedestrians, bikers and drivers alike. Gone are the crosswalks, lane markings, sidewalks and railings, leaving only a uniform expanse of crosshatched black-and-white granite running from South Kensington station to Hyde Park. So what is the rationale behind this madness? Exhibition Road, as The Guardian design columnist Justin McGuirk explained, was once the main route to the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park. While the Exhibition came and went over a century and a half ago, the Victorian thoroughfare continues to connect a number of cultural institutions, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum, remaining what is perhaps "London's grandest cultural artery." However, despite its legacy, Exhibition Road has become somewhat of a "glorified car park," moving many pedestrians to find underground alternatives to get to their cultural destination of choice. This is exactly what the architects at Dixon Jones sought to reverse with their rule-breaking, seamless "shared space" plan, which is in the final stages of completion today. Crediting Dutch traffic engineer Hans Monderman and Danish urban planner Jan Gehl, Dixon Jones proposed to remove all existing delineations on the street,

A Bike-Lane Perch for the Urban Show - NYTimes.com - 0 views

She is the driving force behind the city's new bike lanes and now also a piñata for their vocal opponents. I started out along the Hudson, then headed east at 40th Street, past that nowhere stretch of depots that muscles its way toward the chaos of the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The waterfront is bucolic and almost Zen-like without a million other bikes around, but I've also come to love those gruff, empty, brooding blocks on the far West Side, which I almost never bother to walk. River gives way to industry then density, silence to the din of Midtown - a classic New York transition, an urban glory best absorbed, I have come to realize, from a bike. It's too bad that so many New Yorkers still complain about the bike lanes' contribution to the inconvenience of urban driving instead of promoting them for their obvious role in helping solve the city's transportation miseries, and for their aesthetic possibilities. I don't mean they're great to look

Volume six discusses the Dutch transitions between 1850 and 2050. This volume is not yet available in the webshop, but you can find an appetizer below.  Why transitions are needed? Sustainability transitions are one of the great challenges of the 21th century. Both scientists and politicians agree on the fact that our system is in need of fundamental transformation. After WO II the western world realised in a few decades a welfare state with prosperity for most people. But around 1970 a growing number of groups expressed strong concerns about the social and environmental risks which have come along with that progress. Food crises, climate crises, financial and economic crises increased the sense of u

Bike Tour Will Visit London's 10 Most Dangerous Intersections to Call for Cyclist Safety Alex Davies Transportation / Bikes November 9, 2011 lmQQ!/CC BY 2.0 On Saturday, a group of London cyclists will gather for an unusual ride. The tour won't feature the city's historical or cultural landmarks, but its ten most dangerous intersections, as ranked by cyclist deaths and injuries. The ride is being led by two cycling bloggers, Mark of ibikelondon and Danny of Cyclists in the City. The tour follows in the wake of three protests led by the London Cycling Campaign to protest a redesign of the junction at Blackfriars Bridge, which many transportation advocates argue ignores the needs and safety of cyclists, pedestrians and public transportation. When Transport for London argued that those plans were similar to many supposedly cyclist-friendly intersections, Mark and Danny saw a way to connect the common sentiment that brought 2,500 protestors to Blackfriars Bridge to a wider cause. Mark and Danny originally conceived of the ride as a fact finding mission, to visit each of the ten most dangerous sites and brainstorm ways to make them safer. Enthusiastic public response quickly made it more ambitious, and now around 100 cyclists are expected to take part. There will be safety marshals, photographers, and breaks for tea and coffee. It is not a protest, Mark says, but a chance to educate the public about the dangers cyclists and pedestrians face in a car-oriented setting: We'll take photos of each junction and record the experience of riding these locations; we'll rate each junction for safety, comfort, air quality and cycle facilities and pass our findings directly to Transport for London - that way the next time the terrible and the inevitable happens at one of these junctions TfL can't say they weren't warned. If you're in the area, head to St Mark's Church in Kennington for a 10:30am departure. Follow Alex on Twitter. Tags: Bike-Friendly World | London | Urban

Group Endorses Walk Out in Economics 10 - 0 views

  •
A small group of Harvard students and employees staged an "Occupy Speakout" at noon on Tuesday to express their solidarity with the "National Day of Action." The group also sought to raise awareness of events they have planned for today, including a walkout of the popular Economics 10 introductory course and a March in Boston later in the day. "Mic Check! We are the 99 percent across the country!" the group chanted. The seven Mic Check participants drew attention to several initiatives taking place today, calling on students to join a campus-wide walkout Wednesday. The organizers are planning two separate walkouts-a general walkout at 11:30 a.m. and a walkout from Ec 10 at 12:15 p.m.-before leading students to join a rally in Dewey Square against rising student debt. "I urge all students to walk out of Ec 10, [because it] represents the ideology that brought about our current economic situation," shouted organizer Gabriel H. Bayard '15. Rachel J. Sandalow-Ash '15, who with Bayard is helping organize the Economics 10 walk-out, said she believes the class pushes a "strongly conservative neoliberal ideology." She said, for example, that she thought lectures promoted conservative views against minimum wage. "I think a more diverse viewpoint needs to be raised," Sandalow-Ash said. "The problem is that in an introductory course, what the professor says is generally taken as fact," she said. But some students disagree with the characterization of the class. Harvard Republican Club Secretary Aditi Ghai '14, who took the class last year, said she doesn't think the class is biased. "The class is about pure economic efficiency. Ideology comes into play when we determine how to balance efficiency with social equity," she said. However, Randi B. Michel '14, currently enrolled in Ec 10, said that she probably wouldn't walk out. Despite the "constant underlying layer of extreme conservatism, it would be more effective to meet with

Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety - FHWA Safety Program - 0 views

Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Livable communities are a high priority of the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Obama Administration. A livable community is one that provides safe and convenient transportation choices to all citizens, whether it's by walking, bicycling, transit, or driving. Each year, unfortunately, pedestrian fatalities comprise about 12 percent of all traffic fatalities and there are approximately 4,000 pedestrian deaths. Another 59,000 pedestrians are injured in roadway crashes annually. The numbers are improving, but we still have a ways to go. Pedestrian safety improvements depend on an integrated approach that involves the 4 E's: Engineering, Enforcement, Education, and Emergency Services. The FHWA's Office of Safety develops projects, programs and materials for use in reducing pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities. Pedestrian Safety Strategic Plan Pedestrian Safety Focus States and Cities Crash Facts Tools to Diagnose and Solve the Problem Education and Outreach Pedestrians and Transit Pedestrian Safety in Communities Hispanic Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety [En Español] Legislation and Guidelines Research Order Copies of CD's, Reports, and Other Resources Webinar Information Related Websites Consideration and Implementation of Proven Crash Countermeasures Medians and Pedestrian Refuge Areas in Urban and Suburban Areas Curbed medians provide a pedestrian refuge area both at intersections and midblock locations. While the length of the crossing is important in the pedestrian being able to cross the street during one cycle, it is the median that gives them a refuge if they can not. This is very important especially in midblock locations as that is where over 70% of pedestrian fatalities occur. Also it is where vehicle travel speed are higher which contributes to the injury and fatality rate at this location. Over 80% of pedestrians die when hit by vehicles traveling at 40 mph or faster while less than 20% die when hit at 20 mph.
