KONING, Frame Analysis: Theoretical Preliminaries - 0 views

  •
Frame Analysis: Theoretical PreliminariesThomas KönigFrame analysis is neither a full-fledged theoretical paradigm, nor a coherent methodological approach. Rather, frame analyses are a number of related, even though sometimes partially incompatible methods for the analysis of discourses (Scheufele 1999: 118). What unifies these analyses is a (fairly loose) theoretical connection to Goffman's (1974) work on framing. These pages will overview: the theoretical development of frame analyses;the measurement of frames;important conceptsin frame analysis;software suitable to aid frame analysis;a bibliography of frame analysis.Theoretical DevelopmentInitially frame analysis was initially predicted to become a niche method at best. One Contemporary Sociology reviewer complained that Frame Analysis is cumbersome to read (Davis 1975: 603), the other one wondered, if an adequate systematization of frame analysis would be feasible (Gamson 1975: 605). 1Probably the single most important factor for the success of Goffman's frame analysis despite this initial skeptical assessment is its unorthodox appropriation by scholars from very different traditions. Frame analysis is no longer Goffman's frame analysis, but is frequently only loosely connected to the original formulation. Notwithstanding the recurrent symbolic nods to Goffman, today's "frame analysis" spans a number of disparate approaches (D'Angelo 2002; Fisher 1997; Hallahan 1999; Maher 2001: 81f; Scheufele 1999: 103, 118). Three subject areas stand out in the development of frame analyses since Goffman: Management and organizational studies, social movement studies, and media studies. Each subject area has, of course, focused on different areas of framing theory and has approached the subject with different methods. Following the the work of 2002 Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman and his associate Amos Tversky (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979), management and organizational studies have focused on the behavioral effects of different

Why the Bike Lane is the Golf Course of the 21st Century Posted on January 26, 2012 Hello Dear Readers, The Sightline Daily, a blog affiliated with a Northwest policy think tank, published an article I wrote about my Stevens Fellowship experience. You can read the article here! A funny story about how the opportunity with Sightline came about. I was waiting at a stoplight near Mercer Street in Seattle in late November and this guy pulled up to me (on his bicycle) and commented on how bad the bicycle infrastructure was at that particular intersection. He noticed that I had no "biking clothes" on and asked me if I'd ever heard of Copenhagen Cycle Chic.  "Copenhagen Cycle Chic is my favorite blog!" I told him. Then we started talking bike politics and eventually I realized he was Alan Durning, the founder of the Sightline Institute. I've been reading the Sightline blog and using their research in my work for years. I really like that this Sightline article came about because of a conversation that started on the bike lane (or..errr…lack of bike lane).  Who needs the golf course when you cycle! Cycling is such a social form of transport. Sean and I were biking in to work a few days before Christmas and bumped into our friend Jed who I hadn't seen in almost a year.  (Jed and his wife recently had a baby!) We rode together along the cold, but sunny, shores of Westlake for about ten minutes and caught up.  It was a great way to start the day and I was happy to know that Jed was doing well. Then, the next morning, Sean and I bumped into Jed again-in almost the same place as the day before-and we shared another pleasant commute together while joking about how we were becoming a bike commuter gang. The morning before I left for Copenhagen I biked downtown alone after saying goodbye to Sean. I was feeling the weight of the goodbye and also some anxiety about professional challenges ahead.  I pedaled slowly along Dexter, my pace matchi

The Handbook of Emergent Technologies in Social Research Sharlene Nagy Hesse-Biber 0 Resenhas Oxford University Press US, 2011 - 784 páginas Emergent technologies are pushing the boundaries of how both qualitative and quantitative researchers practice their craft, and it has become clear these changes are dramatically altering research design, from the questions researchers ask and the ways they collect data, to what they even consider data. Gathering a broad range of new developments in one place,The Handbook of Emergent Technologies in Social Researchoffers comprehensive, up-to-date thinking on technological innovations. In addition to addressing how to effectively apply new technologies-such as the internet, mobile technologies, geospatial technologies (GPS), and the incorporation of computer-assisted software programs (CAQDAS) to qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches to research projects-many chapters provide in-depth examples of practices within both disciplinary and interdisciplinary environments and outside the academic world in multi-media laboratories and research institutes. Not only an authoritative view of cutting-edge technologies and their applications, the Handbook examines the costs and benefits of utilizing new technologies on the research process, the potential misuse of these techniques for methods practices, and the ethical and moral dimensions of emergent technologies, especially with regard to issues of surveillance and privacy. The Handbook of Emergent Technologies in Social Researchis an essential resource for research methods courses in various fields, including the social sciences, education, communications, computer science, and health services, and an indispensable guide for social researchers looking to incorporate emerging technologies into their methods and practic

How to choose environment-friendly means of transport - CICERO - 0 views

  •
How to choose environment-friendly means of transport Transport is responsible for one-fourth of all Norwegian emissions. A new research project is now underway to identify the changes needed to reduce emissions from this sector. By Silje Pileberg If major, comprehensive measures are not implemented, the transport sector's impact on the climate will continue to increase throughout this century. This applies to Norway as well. From 1990 to 2005, emissions from the transport sector increased by 27 percent, while total emissions in Norway increased by 9 percent. The Norwegian Government's white paper on climate change calls for emissions from the transport sector to be reduced by 2.5 to 4 million tonnes of CO2 compared with the anticipated level of emissions in 2020. What must be done to reach this goal?   "There are many research activities now underway that aim to develop environment- and climate-friendly technology. But it does not help to design and build emission-free forms of transport if we cannot get society to use them," says Lasse Fridstrøm, Managing Director of the Institute of Transport Economics.   Fridstrøm heads the recently-launched research project called TEMPO, which will study the social conditions for a sustainable transport sector. Choices made every day "Choices between climate-friendly and climate-unfriendly transport alternatives are taken every day - by the individual consumer, company or agency. How can we get these millions of individual decisions to move in one sustainable direction?" asks Fridstrøm. He continues:   "How can we achieve one consistent, effective policy? What instruments do we have at our disposal? What instruments work best? Which ones do not work? There are many myths out there and just as little scientific knowledge."   The TEMPO project will create a better basis for decision-making on climate policy in the transport area. The Institute of Transport Economics is heading the project in conjunction

The Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety - Queensland (CARRS-Q) is one of the leading centres in Australia dedicated to research, education and outreach activities in road safety, and is a vital player in the international pursuit of road safety. CARRS-Q exemplifies an approach to shaping and informing public debate that works through long-term partnerships with key government and industry bodies. The Centre was founded by well-known and respected Professor of Psychology Mary Sheehan, and is currently headed by Professor Barry Watson, with a very strong support team of leading academics. CARRS-Q was established in 1996 as a joint venture initiative of the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) . The Centre was created to address the enormous human, economic and social costs resulting from road crashes. This was made possible by a grant from the MAIC through the QUT Foundation. MAIC and QUT provide core funding for staff and research infrastructure. The Centre also obtains major funding support through successful national competitive research grants and consultancies. In November 2006, MAIC and QUT announced continued further funding for CARRS-Q over the next 5 years, an important endorsement of the Centre's achievements, and its valuable role in the community and commitment to achieving real and long-term results through providing research based information to policy makers. The major benefit for all key stakeholders and the Queensland community is the presence of a unique Centre which is an integral part of a strong collaborative research, policy analysis and change culture with very close working relationships with Queensland Transport, Queensland Police Service, Department of Main Roads, RACQ, QFleet, and other relevant government and industry departments and the Parliamentary Travelsafe Committee. CARRS-Q works collaboratively with strong networks in the road safety and injury prevention field

Science of Pedestrian Movements posted by jason king on january 05, 2012 Books, Cities, Modeling, Pedestrians, Public Space, Research, Resources, Transportation An interesting article from the Economist on 'The Wisdom of Crowds' echoes much of the seminal research of William Whyte (City), Edward T. Hall (The Hidden Dimension), and others that have closely studied the behavior of pedestrians and other users of public spaces.   The interplay of cultural habits that tells us to step right or left to avoid collisions on a busy street can lead to a certain inherent poetic 'choreography' when viewed.  There are different theories on how these actions are coordinated, and the article focuses on new scientific methods for predicting and studying pedestrian movements.  As Jane Jacobs mentioned in The Death and Life of Great American Cities this urban realm is likened to a ballet: "It is a complex order. Its essence is intricacy of sidewalk use, bringing with it a constant succession of eyes. This order is all composed of movement and change, and although it is life, not art, we may fancifully call it the art form of the city and liken it to the dance - not to a simple-minded precision dance with everyone kicking up at the same time, twirling in unison and bowing off en masse, but to an intricate ballet in which the individual dancers and ensembles all have distinctive parts which miraculously reinforce each other and compose an orderly whole. The ballet of the good city sidewalk never repeats itself from place to place, and in any once place is always replete with new improvisations." It was interesting, in this context, to remember my recent travels to Europe, namely London, where traffic on the roads occupies the left lane, but as mentioned in the article, there is not a correlation between this and pedestrian movement.  While they mention that London follows pedestrians on the right, that is an oversimplification, as it doesn't necessarily follow,

Boarneta pages 197-213 Available online: 21 Jul 2011 Alert me Abstract Problem: Planning studies of land use and travel behavior focus on regression analysis of travel as a function of traveler demographics and land use near study subjects' residences. Methodological debates have tended to focus almost exclusively on the possibility that persons choose their residence based on how they wish to travel. This longer view steps back from the confines of the regression-based literature to explain the historical roots, methods, and results of the literature, and to assess how the land use-travel literature must be transformed to be more relevant to planning. Purpose: There are many summaries and meta-analyses of the impact of land use on travel. The goal here is not to understand how we might better specify a regression or summarize the results of past studies, but rather to explain how a literature that has become fundamental to planning scholarship is failing to be sufficiently planning focused. At the same time, this longer view describes how the literature can be transformed to address the planning challenges of today and tomorrow. Methods: This longer view summarizes over 100 articles, covering transportation methods from the dawn of the interstate highway era to topics that include program evaluation, land development, and cognitive aspects of travel behavior. The primary focus is on the land use and travel literature, but the review and analysis is broad ranging and places the literature and its challenges within the broader context of recent developments in the social sciences, planning, policy, and electronic data collection. Results and conclusions: This longer view elucidates three research frontiers that will be necessary to move the land use-travel literature forward. First, behavioral models of land use and travel m

DOSSIER/ Villes chinoises en mouvement- Revenir au sommaire Abstracts in english Traduction : Iain Whyte Editorial Antoine Loubière, Editor-in-chief of "Urbanisme", outlines the contents of the special feature entitled "Chinese Cities on the Move", produced in partnership with l'Institut pour la Ville en Mouvement (PSA Peugeot-Citroën) / The City on the Move Institute. The IVM organised an international symposium in Beijing from 11 to 13 October 2004 on the subject of "Urban mobilities: the research issues in China and abroad". The feature contains a report on this symposium and on the Chinese city workshops dedicated to Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Wuhan. The rebirth of Chinese cities Paradoxically, in spite of being in the grips of globalisation, metropolisation and the constraints of ever more complex urban management, Chinese cities seem to be undergoing a normalisation process. The reforms initiated over 20 years ago have completely changed the urban scene in China inherited from Maoism. Jean-François Doulet, who teaches at l'Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) and heads the IVM's China programme, explains this change. Round-table discussion: French views on Chinese cities This round-table discussion brought together French researchers (François Ascher, Georges Amar) and French urban development professionals (Bernard Reichen, Laurent Théry, Étienne Tricaud) involved in IVM initiatives in China. The participants first discussed the conditions in which Chinese cities develop. They then discussed the part played by mobility in the structuring of Chinese cities, asking themselves if there was a "Chinese model" of urban development in contrast to the European and US models. The International Symposium in Beijing (11-13 October 2004) After a presentation of the IVM's China programme, based notably on an interview with its Secretary General, Xavier Fels, head of external relations at PSA Peugeot-Citroën, th

TRANSFORMING TANSPORTATION - 0 views

  •
The recent crisis in the automotive industry, in which tens of thousands of jobs were lost and once-dominant manufacturers were forced into bankruptcy, has raised many questions regarding innovation, change, technology, labor, and policy. At the same time and in response to this crisis, the nation is moving toward developing and implementing more sustainable, connected, and affordable systems of transportation that contribute to more livable and economically vital communities and economies. The potential transformations in culture, job skills required, new business models, and cross-industry relationships associated with these trends are enormous, and challenge us to understand and affect the future consequences of this momentous change. Michigan's research universities have unique opportunities, expertise and a collective responsibility to explore these questions and provide the state and the region with research-based insights for understanding and addressing the profound economic and social challenges - and opportunities - of our times. The transformation of transportation represents a fundamental realignment of industries that have served as the bases of state and local economies, that have supported generations of workers, and that have characterized the core identity of many regions of the country. To assist the state and the nation, as well as global counterparts, to prepare for the changes to come, the mission of the Transforming Transportation consortium incorporates five critical objectives: Identify the research questions, problems and issues that arise from the fundamental transformation of the transportation industry. Explore the dynamics of innovation, transformation and renewal as they relate to the changes in the transportation industry. Develop inter-institutional, inter-disciplinary programs of inquiry and communities of scholars and practitioners to explore the industry transformation and renewal. Provide knowledge-based insights to poli

Sustainability transitions are one of the great challenges of the 21th century. Both scientists and politicians agree on the fact that our system is in need of fundamental transformation. After WO II the western world realised in a few decades a welfare state with prosperity for most people. But around 1970 a growing number of groups expressed strong concerns about the social and environmental risks which have come along with that progress. Multiple Scales of Conflict Organizers: Jessica Flack There are two primary challenges faced by all complex, adaptive systems.  One is an uncertain and noisy environment. The other is conflict. Conflict arises when the interests of system components - whether genes, cells, individuals, or states - are not fully aligned. Some have gone so far as to argue that lack of alignment, or "frustration," in many body systems is the defining feature of complex systems. In the long 3.5 billion year history of life on earth organisms and aggregates have devised manifold strategies in order to survive and prosper in the face of conflict. The solutions that organisms have built for managing conflict are thought to have played a central role in facilitating the major transitions from simple aggregates to more integrated, social organisms, and cultures.  Although these transitions suggest nature has been successful at predicting and managing conflict, the problem is not a simple one. Controlling conflict is tricky because it is both a destabilizing force and an agent of innovation - thus nature has evolved mechanisms of good management, not suppression. Conflict can have multiple, nonlinear causes and effects, and these often lie at different timescales (e.g. evolutionary, ontogenetic, societal). Conflict can be the outcome of competitive processes and involve deception or be generated by differing priorities, communications failures, and error. Despite this complexity, data indicate that similar conflicts with comparable mechanisms of control have evolved at different levels of biological and social organization. This suggests that there might be a universal class of mechanisms that have arisen across very different levels to control co-evolutionary escalation. This focus area brings together evolutionary theorists, immunologists, experts on behavioral conflict in human and animal societies, computer scientists, molecular biologists, economists, and complex systems theo
