Unregulated carbon pollution from aviation is the fastest-growing source of the greenhouse gas emissions driving global climate change. In fact, if the entire aviation sector were a country, it would be one of the top 10 carbon-polluting nations on the planet. The good news is that we now have a process in place to curb international aviation's skyrocketing emissions. For the first time ever, the United Nations' civil aviation body agreed last week to put a cap on the emissions for an international sector rather than a country. International aviation already accounts for over 2% of global carbon emissions. But this number will soar as demand for air travel continues to rises. In 2010, the aviation industry carried 2.4 billion passengers; in 2050, the number is forecast to rise to 16 billion.

Over the last 50 years, human diets around the world have grown ever more similar and the trend shows no signs of slowing, with major consequences for human nutrition and global food security, according to research carried out at International Center for Tropical Agriculture.

If the global business community is to thrive in the long term - and carry us to that flourishing future we are trying to imagine and help build - it needs to continue to scale up the ambition and influence of its efforts. That's much easier said than done, of course, though we are seeing a number of encouraging trends within the Sustainable Brands community that, while still nascent, are promising to deliver a lot of value for years to come. 

Texas ranchers have forged an unlikely partnership with environmental activists to protest the 143-mile Trans-Pecos pipeline, which if completed would carry natural gas from West Texas to the Mexican border. Companies including Campbell Soup, Colgate-Palmolive and Owens Corning use internal pricing mechanisms to keep tabs on, and hopefully reduce, their carbon emissions. That's a sign that business leaders are preparing for regulatory measures aimed at curbing carbon emissions, says Lance Pierce, president of nonprofit CDP North America. "The world's biggest companies anticipate a future in which their carbon emissions carry a price," he said. 

UK specialty paper and advanced materials manufacturer James Cropper PLC has unveiled a sustainable alternative to plastic that the company says can carry the weight of an adult and be composted within 100 days. Developed in partnership with Södra, a Swedish forestry cooperative, DuraPulp is a bio-composite material that can be suitable for a variety of applications.

The U.S. Senate rejected by a one-vote margin a bill passed by the House to allow construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada to Gulf of Mexico refineries. The measure needed 60 votes to go forward but received 59. White House advisers have suggested that President Barack Obama might eventually let the project proceed.

The EPA released a final version of its Climate Change Adaptation Plan, which explains how the agency is incorporating climate change considerations into its programs, policies, rules, and operations. The EPA also released 17 implementation plans explaining how each of its program and regional offices will carry out the agenda described in the adaptation plan.

Whole Foods launched the Responsibly Grown rating system, which evaluates produce based on environmental and health impacts. Products will carry a "good," "better," or "best" label based on their rating.

But analysis carried out by ClimateWorks, a global philanthropy-focused NGO, found that almost all of the recent COP21 related commitments from 65 of the world's biggest businesses do not explicitly address the vast majority of emissions for which the companies involved are responsible.

The non-GMO labeling movement received a big boost last week when PepsiCo announced that it would begin including the Non-GMO Project's butterfly seal on the Tropicana juice line. "Tropicana Pure Premium is non-GMO, and it always has been," said brand chief Björn Bernemann. "Some consumers, however, are expressing a desire to get beyond what brands are actually telling them, and we felt having external verification would give our consumers assurance."

Palm Oil Free Certification programme launches in UK and Australia A new certification programme has launched to validate consumer products that make no use of palm oil, which has been blamed for fuelling deforestation in Asia. Set up by a group of women experts, the Palm Oil Free Certification Accreditation Programme (POFCAP) is now in operation in Australia and the UK following approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, IP Australia, and IPO UK. Fourteen other nations have applied to introduce the label. Australia-based eco cleaning products company Clean Conscience is the first to carry the label, and the group is working with a host of other companies on certification. Despite improvements to tackle deforestation, POFCAP said "only 17% of all palm oil used can be classed as 'non-conflict'". The scheme is based on extensive research and trusted methods to trace all potential palm oil and palm oil derivative ingredients of a product back to their source. (Business Green)

The Congressional Budget Office says the government's spending on disasters could rise from today's $28 billion to $39 billion in current dollars by 2075, when 10 million US residents will be "substantially affected" by climate change. The CBO suggests requiring coastal residents to carry more of the financial burden of their risk, as curtailing emissions might not go far enough to address the problem.
