  • The term authenticity has been applied to music in various ways. It might be used to describe a piece of music (recorded, notated, performed); the process by which the music is taught and learned ( through recordings, live models, notation); or the manner in which it is performed (venue, dress, behaviors).

To confound matters, there are variants of melodies, lyrics, dances, games, and performance styles.

    Should your kid play football? It is a question that might have been unthinkable to many just a few years ago. Football is part of our culture. More than half a century ago, it supplanted baseball as the American pastime. Upward of 100 million people - about a third of the population - watch the Super Bowl each year. Around here, it is more than just sport and entertainment. Some have likened it to a religion. Without question, it is an important part of the fabric of society.

      Wouldn't it be better to start with this anecdote. It's got real impact. As it is, it's buried too far down and there's too much tame scene setting to start with.

When the police entered his apartment they found a large collection of knives, hammers, baseball bats, knuckle-dusters, axes and other weapons scattered around the flat. When I visited the now empty apartment, these items were all still laid out on the kitchen table awaiting their removal by the police. Apparently the apartment had also by necessity just been fumigated. Needless to say, I declined to take up a rental contract with the agent for that particular property.

But I don’t entirely agree with his point of view. Berlin needs newcomers, it needs new creativity and new enterprise. It can’t afford to stagnate and just remain a working class city in a city with little for the working class to do anymore. I find this hostility towards “Aerzte, Architekten und Anwaelte” rather parochial and narrow-minded. Why be against these people? Because they are doing well for themselves? What are they supposed to do? Sweep the streets or draw Stuetze (unemployment benefit)?

  • Desolate enough? The sight of workers toiling among these giant piles may have even reminded Fitzgerald of Dante, and Fitzgerald's real-life encounter with this spot must have played a part in the genesis of the entire novel.
  • If Gatsby's caravan took this southern route, the railroad and highway would have merged exactly as described in the novel. Here, then, is the bridge they would have crossed. I can't tell for sure that it's a drawbridge, but I'm willing to believe it must be one. The tiny settlement to the right, then, is exactly the spot where Dr. Eckleburg's billboard would have stood, and where George Wilson would have kept his auto garage.
