This is some more of the virtual worlds teens are on. "Virtual worlds for teens Kids don't outgrow virtual worlds when they hit their teenage years. Many virtual worlds are geared toward the teenage set and they are gaining popularity every day. Meez - With over 80 casual games and multimedia sharing, Meez is a great site for teens. Avatars can navigate different neighborhoods, interact with friends, leave messages and watch videos. Teens can customize avatars that can be exported to other social networks and gaming sites. RuneScape - The RuneScape world is a medieval fantasy realm where players travel through different kingdoms and cities. Users create customizable avatars, fight monsters, complete quests, play games, chat and trade with others, and much more. Both free and premium memberships are available. IMVU - Intended for the teen crowd, IMVU boasts over 100 million users in 88 different countries and has a virtual goods catalog of over 10 million items. Users can search for people based on gender, location and age or join groups based on interests or personal opinions. SuperSecret - In SuperSecret, players start at age 10 and grow up to age 18 by achieving things in a variety of games. As users get older within the games, they get more privileges - at 16 they can drive a virtual car, at 18 they can vote, etc."

Learn 4 Life » Educators in Virtual Worlds on Open Sim - the pioneers… - 0 views

Watch the interview with students below in Real Life and Avatar form and then the next one with Vicki see how eloquently she comments on these new learning landscapes. I would hold that interview up as a seminal exemplar of someone who knows exactly what they are doing in this field and if I had my way it would be required viewing for anyone who has doubts about the efficacy of using Web 2.0 tools in education and the systems and infrastructure that can be built around them. I would also point people to the award winning wiki on the global Flat Classroom Project for further reference - the Digiteen project is just one small subset of that whole activity.

Whatever you look up or plan on the internet people can see it. If the government pays for it they can see what you are looking at. People can stalk you on the internet. "Are you planning a trip? A wedding? Have you been searching your medical symptoms on WebMD, or Google stalking your high school crush? Did all of your friends wish you a Happy Birthday on your Facebook page? If so, your financial status, religious beliefs, medical history, birth date and hometown have all been exposed, recorded and compiled into a virtual database that functions as your digital alter ego, a sort of online avatar. That critical mass of information may be accessible to the government or to anyone else who asks (or pays) for it."

How Second Life Affects Real Life - TIME - 0 views

  • About a year ago in my first visit to Second Life, the popular online virtual world, I spent half an hour trying to make my avatar, or online character, look like a hotter version of myself — which isn't easy when you don't know how to use the tools. When I finally made it onto Money Island to mingle, a stranger approached me and said, "Hello there, Devon." I froze. Then I tried to run. I was desperately searching for the teleport tool when my sister walked into the room, peered over my shoulder at the computer screen and said, "Why'd you make your avatar ugly?" I logged off.

"Why is Netiquette Important? The internet is now a medium of communication for most people nowadays. Everything from business transactions, buying and selling, socializing or simply blogging your thoughts are conducted over the internet. Net etiquette is a fusion of the internet and good manners in cyberspace. Though nothing is really concrete in cyberspace it is important to bear in mind that the internet involves millions of people. It is like a world in a gadget, but the people you are dealing with on the other end are real and not mere avatars. Our generation now lives in the internet; there are formalities and guidelines to follow to render professionalism, courtesy, and order making the internet more useful and effective as possible. The very basic rule in Netiquette is thinking before posting. Be careful with any personal, confidential or legal matters sent through email messages. Remember, emails can be forwarded to anyone. Unsolicited messages are spam and detested by everyone. Chain letters can be one example; it would be best to delete it and not forward it. Be careful when spreading warnings about Internet viruses sometimes it may just be a hoax. Many get fooled by this and immediately copy paste and send it to everyone in their mail list. You may end up getting a lot of junk mail or spam in the process. DO NOT CAPITALIZE TOO MUCH or it may seem like you are shouting and this is rude. Lessen the use of acronyms, BRB for “be right back” and etc. Not everyone is familiar with this internet lingo. Acronyms may be ideal in the chat room but unprofessional in email. Make use of the FAQ, Frequently Asked Questions, it is a form of orientation for news groups and social networks. Bear in mind that everything has consequences anything you do will affect you. Not observing proper Netiquette may mean losing your internet account. Share "

      This will help!
  • Access is a very important thing in life. The ten most important terms that have to do with Access are: connect, internet, access, obtain, retrieve, regain and gate way which all mean that there is or you can access something although in particular, the internet.
  • Identity is a topic that people may not think about as access. Although it is. Identity can be shown on the computer or on the internet. When you have access to the internet your identity can be shown through various ways for example, Facebook and MySpace through profiles, pictures and the network. It is a positive thing because now you can show your identity to other people around the world.

this will help many people, i should hope!
  • Digital Divide is probably the most important and simplest topic
  • They can get internet on computers by joining a local wi-fi like at a coffee shop, at school, or at a business. Digital Access is how everyday people access their computers and the Internet.
  • 72% of U.S. adults now have Broadband access. Those who don't get it go to work, public libraries, schools, and as well as on their cell phones.
  • mostly go to websites that have games for kids to play. Millsberry, Build a bear, Webkinz, and Club penguin are all places that children could create their own animated avatar type stuff
  • Censorship is when you are not allowed to do something and if you do you will be in trouble by the government. For example, in China they have censorship and they are not allowed to look certain things up on the internet
  • Digital Divide is basically having a line and putting the people that don’t have access to the internet on one side and the ones that do on the other side.

The digital divide here in south Georgia USA would be like those people who have high speed internet vs. those who have dial up or don't have INternet that are in the country.
  • one of the main problems for adults and kids with accessing the Internet around the world is, simply, their location. People who live in the city would have no problem finding a computer to go on the Internet and do as they want,

Educational Frontiers: Learning in a Virtual World (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE - 1 views

  • Virtual worlds are engaging, stimulating spaces where students can meet online for normal class activities, including lectures, discussions, case studies, projects, papers, exams, and labs.
  • A virtual world class differs from a traditional course management system, such as Blackboard or Moodle, due to the three-dimensional (3D) graphical setting, the use of avatars to represent the class participants, and the sense of presence that puts the learner within the scene.
  • Virtual world classrooms are no less real than other online class environments, and if used for synchronous class sessions, they may simulate a campus-based class meeting.

UK online safety expert proposes Pet Society feature as dangerous to children - 2 views

  • Conway, a self-touted "online safety expert,"
  • stranger danger"
  • By being in the Cafe, you're bound to meet strangers. Even though all you can do once you get to another pet's home is some pre-set actions (e.g. hug, kiss, dance, laugh, and punch), there's also the option to visit the real Facebook profile of a someone you might not know at all. Conway demonstrated this by creating an avatar named "BunnyPig" to demonstrate to a group of foster care and social workers.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Because Facebook games require players to have lots of friends to earn virtual money and goods, Conway concludes that kids will be tempted to friend strangers
  • And in turn, he estimates that malevolent strangers can scope out kids who play the game. This "Go to profile" option is clearly a valid concern and does exist in the game.
  • kids under 13 years-old could still lie to Facebook about their age just to have a Facebook account.
  •
This article is by Charles Conway. He says that children must friend a lot of people to get coins or money for Pet Society , a fast growing Facebook game. This means children under the age of 13 are becoming interested in this website. They might even lie to create an account. Adding people they do not know will be a bad habit for children at this youngof age.
