Understanding Digital Civics | DMLcentral - 0 views

  • it would also be a mistake not to take seriously the role of new communications media in understanding civic life. In democratic states, citizens need information about what challenges a government faces and what it’s proposing to do about it to be effective citizens. And citizens need to be able to connect with one another to discuss, debate and propose solutions. What a communications medium makes possible has a shaping influence on civic life.

Spot on! Technology really is changing the world, and the sharing of ideas all over it.
  • Globalization has shaped our era. Technology has minimized distances; ideas, values and news cross borders quicker than ever before. New definitions and complex debates over our identities as international and national citizens have arisen as a result. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. puts it: “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

Here is the comment I left on the SlideShare website: This is super important stuff, thank you for sharing. In our digital age, a person's ability to market themselves on the web is a form of social capital. The more people follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and the blogosphere, the greater influence we can have. It makes me think about what happens in the book, 'Ender's Game' by Orson Scott Card. In the story, Peter and Valentine publish a lot of political commentary under aliases which eventually have a huge impact on world politics. Our future world may be run by those who can best market themselves and let their voice be heard.

This is proof that you can find anything on the web. I hope you all enjoy. If you want to look deeper into any meaning that can be derived from this website, it would be that I found this website by doing the following: I looked on the digital literacy labs page, I clicked on the Create labs, I clicked the link to Slideshare.net, I looked at the top presentations which was done by a Heidi Miller, I followed Heidi Miller, looked at her profile, went to her blog, read some then scrolled down far enough and found this sweet gem of the internet.
