K-12 Wiki: Social Networking Acceptable Use

Denis Masseni, a Monash university lecturer and a director of Sponsor-Ed has written a report called "Why Schools are spooked by social media" (2010) which presents findings from a survey of 140 principals on the subject of social media. It's a positive take on SNS use in schools. This site links both the 34 page paper and a small radio interview (8 mins) which is well worth a listen.

Thursday, April 21, 2011 Cybersmart has released new lesson plans about sexting for both middle and upper secondary students. Sexting is the sending of provocative or sexual images or messages generally using a mobile phone. Sexting can have serious social and, increasingly, legal consequences for students.

University of NSW researcher Nina Funnell has spoken to hundreds of young people aged between 15 and 18 about their sexting habits for a book she is writing and found sexting is an accepted part of adolescent dating culture."The common idea is that young people are doing this as a response to pressure or they're brainwashed by popular culture," Ms Funnell said.

This article is a little light on and it seems it could be the intellectual embodiment from an ad for a web domain vendor but it does highlight the need for a positive digital footprint in the future. This is a key driver in digital citizenry education and a positive approach to the 'digital footprint'. Though I have also seen the flip side warning that the reckless bravado of youthful antics can leave you with a footprint which haunts you like a ghost negating any job prospects. ie the scaremongering approach. I guess depending on the individual both approaches have value...?
