Thursday, April 21, 2011 Cybersmart has released new lesson plans about sexting for both middle and upper secondary students. Sexting is the sending of provocative or sexual images or messages generally using a mobile phone. Sexting can have serious social and, increasingly, legal consequences for students.

"Following small-scale trials, Korean officials are reportedly moving forward with a plan to install remote management software on students' smartphones. iSmartKeeper is an app that restricts what services and apps students have access to. With the app installed, teachers have the ability to lock phones down in one of six modes. Educators can choose to lock all of the phones in the school, allow only emergency calls, allow only phone calls, allow calls and SMS, or turn off specific apps. The idea is to prevent distractions in class, and iSmartKeeper can also allow access to only a single app, ensuring that educational apps can still be used as teaching aids."

Another article for gauging where schools, educators' pedagogies sit in relation to using technologies. Do we offer students opportunities to develop good citizenship behaviours using technologies? Is education and learning in a rut in some schools? A real thought provoking article?

Teaching digital citizenship and keeping students in the classroom safe online (and off of course!) is a priority for teachers when using iPads, Google Apps, and other devices & websites in the classroom. While even the best laid digital citizenship plans can lay the foundation, teachers need to continue revisiting topics and guiding students all year.

It would be great to see students involved in planning and managing how technology should be used in their learning. Young people already have many of the skills needed to use new technologies. They would be no doubt enthusiastic about being taking a leading role in how these would be used in their learning.
