Our right to privacy - 1 views

  •
An agent from NSA was invading peoples privacy. He was watching peoples personal accounts such as emails. Other companies are also involved in watching peoples privacy. The judge of the case wants to keep a balance with the personal lives of American citizens.
  •
I agree that people most definitely have the right to privacy. Although, I think that if someone commits a serious crime, they should certainly be investigated.
  •
Privacy is important. I agree that if someone breaks the law that they should lose their privacy in order to find out more about them.

Whale Wars How Sea Shepherd Works - 0 views

  •
When Paul Watson says that he and other members of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society risk their lives to save whales, he isn't joking. Every winter, the Sea Shepherd staff and crew set sail to the treacherous Southern Ocean to stop Japanese whalers from catching and killing nature's largest mammals.
  •
I used to love watching their show on discovery channel. I agree they do risk lives every time they go out to stop the Japanese whalers. I do feel that the conservation of whales is important to our environment. I went whale watching in San Diego over the summer and they are magnification animals.

Equal Pay - 5 views

  •
Women deserve equal pay. On average, they are paid less than their male counterparts. It effects their spending power and what women receive in their social security.

  •
This is a really good article because it also talks about how race affects the pay gap. Most articles I find on the topic ignore how non-white women are paid less than white women. The struggle for mothers attempting to reenter the workplace is horrible.
  •
A reality unfortunately, in our society. It is almost hilarious how you read on all papers when you are hired :"we are an equal opportunity employer, no discrimination of any kind..." and yet the first thing you notice is the pay you get in comparison with a man who is less qualified than you but...he is a man. And, as kat2222004 pointed, very hard for mothers to reenter the work field, the mother is not trusted anymore to be a reliable employee.
  •
Really good article. I saw this as I was choosing a topic to discuss in our discussion last week. I 100% agree that women should receive the same pay as men. Women are such hard workers whether it is in the work force, or for those who have to maintain a family as well.
  •
The 77 cent claim has been repeatedly refuted because it does not accommodate for the fact that women are more likely to choose lower paying jobs or jobs with benefits. Men on average work longer hours. Single, childless women in major cities earn more than men. Women obtain 58% of college degrees. Women are less likely to go into STEM jobs. Also statistics are easily manipulated. Watch TJ explain the wage gap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWAlg48fNwE
  •
I definitely agree with this article. Even if some people like to think this isn't a problem it definitely is. For men and women in the same field regardless of what that field is men often get the higher income than women do. My mother is a major example of this and often talks about how the men in the same department as her make more money even when they produce less work that generally isn't that good. On top of that my mother works the same amount of hours and even more than average in a given week yet still doesn't come close to the pay gap. Of course, there may be inconsistency in statistics but it is definitely still an issue to be aware of because it still exists.

Teen Suicide - 1 views

This article is very clear on what signs to watch for, how to address the person if you do see signs and how to get them help. I feel that after reading this article I will feel more comfortable speaking up in a situation if needed. I hope you guys read this and share it with friends and family.

Kids Health page. Stats and risk factors for teen suicide. Offers warning signs and advises parents what to watch out for.

D'Arcy Lyness, PhD is the editing body of this article. These are the types of sources you want to use in a paper surely! http://kidshealth.org/media/khexperts/lyness.html This is a link to her accomplishments in field. I believe she is very qualified and this article is highly reputable. However I would like to see some statistics that support some of the claims in the article. I spent about 10 minutes reviewing the information in this article and have found some conflicting information(s). https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/suicide-datasheet-a.pdf Above is a snap-sheet posted by the CDC summarizing suicide in 2015. The article I am responding to is dated August 15th. In both places the leading cause factor is different. The CDC claims that in ages 15-34 that suicide is the second largest contributing factor to teenage death. The internet is sleezy. I don't know what to believe anymore.
  •
This is a great article that goes into depth about what causes suicide, what to look out for, etc. Some parents are kind of in the dark about this type of stuff, so it's awesome that such a source exists for parents before it is too late. It makes me sad that it is the third-leading cause of death. A permanent solution to a temporary problem..
  •
I agree 101% how terrible it is that this is the third leading cause of death. Life should not be about spending your time planning on how it will end. I am now happy though that I have the right tools to know how to deal with this type of social justice.

Although I don't think it will be me who takes this subject on as my research project, I hope someone else does. I don't remember anyone bringing this topic up in our first discussion. This kind of stuff really bothers me while watching it in a movie or reading about it in a book. I don't have the stomach for it.
  •
Many people over look this topic. It is important to watch out for children and recognize child abuse.
  •
This is a major issue and would be a great subject for a research project. Our children are our future and need to be taken care of.

Media, Body Image, and Eating Disorders - 0 views

  •
This article shows how increased media exposure affects our bodies and the way we envision our bodies. Talks about effects of media advertising and youth, and how media can influence eating disorders.
  •
Mass media provides a significantly influential context for people to learn about body ideals and the value placed on being attractive. Over 80% of Americans watch television daily. On average, these people watch over three hours per day. American children engage in increasing amounts of media use, a trend fueled largely by the growing availability of internet access through phones and laptops.

Elder Abuse - 2 views

  •
This article discusses the appalling video that made the rounds this week through news and social media. It depicts another instance of elder abuse that was caught on a home security camera. Why is is so difficult to find trustworthy care for the elderly? Most of the time families can't afford to provide adequate care.
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
The video is extremely difficult to watch, however, people need to be educated on this ongoing issue. Unfortunately, elder abuse happens worldwide and in different forms. Some types of abuse towards the elderly include financial abuse, physical abuse, and emotional abuse. What concerns me is the fact that there are many caregivers who are abusive and still hold certification to be employed in nursing homes.
  •
This is a real issue. People take advantage of the elderly because they are helpless. I have heard sad stories about nursing homes as well. They are of course human and deserve to be treated like one.
  •
I agree we need to take better care of our elderly people, not just to treat them respectfully which should be a given, but to take time to listen to them. Our parents give us life. They take care of us and make sacrifices for us. Then when the time comes, it is our duty to do the same. Beyond that, their lifetime of experience can benefit us all.
  •
This was very difficult to watch. As a child whose parent was diagnosed with fronto-temporal dementia, I had no choice but to place her in an assisted living home. Even though I didn't live far from the facility, it was hard to get information from staff. A few staff members were there for years, and I feel fortunate that they took really good care of my mother. I don't think this same experience happens for a lot of people.

NSA Surveillance - 0 views

  •
The National Security Agency has greatly expanded since September 11, 2001. People have come forward and recently exposed the corruption of the system, and the spying the agency has conducted on millions of Americans, through phone calls and other mass forms of media we consume everyday.
  •
I understand the reason for the surveillance, but I feel that if they find nothing wrong, they should move on. I also feel that it is a violation of peoples' rights to privacy. If I was a suspected terrorist or caught peeping on sites that I shouldn't, please track me so that I don't hurt anyone or do irreparable damage. However, if you spy on me and all I do is talk to family and do homework, pay bills and occasionally visit Facebook, then just leave me alone. Spend the time watching someone that you should be.
  •
Whether the NSA is listening to you or not, if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about, they are not sharing your information with others, nor are they even listening closely to your conversation. The NSA was weakened through the repealing of the patriot act last year, and since there have been 3 major terror attacks on the homeland, a clear rise in terror in the homeland through the gained power of terrorist due to paranoia from American citizens, who value privacy over safety.

Next 10 Amendments: Flag burning and protected free speech - 1 views

  •
Is burning or desecrating the American flag a right protected by the First Amendment? Or should a new constitutional amendment outlaw both acts? The issue of desecrating the flag goes back in the courts almost 100 years. Finally in 1989, the Supreme Court decided in Texas v.

I was watching a lecture by Michael Parenti on this subject. A few people would argue that there are other bigger problems our nation should address before this issue, but I argue that this topic is important too. Nice read.
  •
It is interesting to know that this has been a problem for almost 100 years it amazing. In my own opinion I feel it is disrespectful to Americans and our military. On the other hand I can see where some would think it is a right for the 1st Amendment.
  •
I do not think that burning the American flag is really effective as it only makes others mad. I think that people should protest if they are upset about something or believe something is unfair. I do not think that people should protest violently/aggressively, though. A lot of people protest peacefully, but some do protest violently- which only puts a harsh look on the whole situation.
  •
I understand that there is a lot wrong with this country and people have a right to be upset with our government and how the country is right now. I feel that the flag symbolizes much more than just our country. I feel like it stands for every man and woman fighting for this country in the military. The flag symbolizes the military people that have died for us. I feel like buring the flag is complete disrespect to those that have died for our country and their families. There are so many ways to protest your beliefs about the country, there is no need to burn the flag that I feel represents the honor of those that have died for our country.

I completely agree with this. We can't stop the government from watching what we type but there should be a limit to what they can and cannot see.
