Gender Dysphoria: DSM-5 Reflects Shift In Perspective On Gender Identity | Huffington Post - 0 views

  •
In the recent DSM-5, the manual mental health professions use to diagnose a disorder, 'Gender Identity Disorder' has been renamed 'Gender Dysphoria' in order to make an attempt in changing the current perspective people have on gender. This change resembles that of which homosexuality was dropped as a disorder from the DSM in the 70's. While this is a huge strive for the right direction in the transgender movement, some changes still need to be made. The diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria only focuses on binary gender identities and does not show acknowledgement of nonbinary identities that some transgender people label as. A diagnoses is crucial for legal purposes, so if a nonbinary individual cannot be diagnosed they may not be able to access hormones for their transition or the legal changes they wish to make.

Argument: Should prostitution be legalized? - 3 views

  •
This website is an argument between Dianne Post and Bishakha Datta. The two women give their own perspectives on prostitution and whether they think it should be legalized or not. Dianne Post believes that it should not be legalized, while Bishakha Datta believes that it should be legalized.
  •
I do not know how to feel about this article. They both have great points. I have friends who prostitute. I have seen some get there lives destroyed and some that seem to be fine. I honestly think it should be illegal because of the violence that comes from it. No women should have to face it.
  •
I disagree with the perspective that prostitution should be legalized on a philosophical basis. Dianna in her post made excellent points against the legalization of prostitution so I will not reiterate them. Legalizing something that has been thought of as immoral for millennia I believe would be unwise. I don't think anyone would agree with me if I were to argue for the legalization of murder, so why would we legalize something that is on an equal level of immoral behavior for a majority of people.

Immigration Issues in Arizona - 0 views

  •
Immigration is always a sensitive subject especially with Arizona being so close to the boarder. It is interesting to see a minister's perspective on immigration. The author believes that all immigrants are criminals. This shows a representation of many U.S citizens. Its also states that a law needs to be made in order to fix our "broken" immigration status. I do not exactly agree with this article, but it shows the perspective some have on the immigration status. A huge social issue.

Gun Control - Pros & Cons - 1 views

  •
This article provides the reader with a list if pros and cons to imitating a gun control law. It helps in providing the reader with some basic knowledge on a controversial topic.

I agree this is a very controversial topic. In my opinion, it's truly hard to pick a side due to the fact that I understand both perspectives. Regardless, it's an issue that I hope gets resolved, eventually.
  •
I don't like the idea that "gun ownership deters crime." Criminals are criminals, because they don't consider the consequences of their actions. They don't evaluate if the person has a weapon, a child, or a dog. Gun ownership from my perspective only increases the likelyhood that one of those weapons is going to fire.
  •
Gun control is a difficult topic to discuss. More gun control laws will not end shootings. On both sides of the spectrum, there are pros and cons to more or less gun control laws.

The Traveling Wave Reactor: Design and Development - 1 views

  •
The author takes a third person perspective on the topic, and seems to provide many technical details about the idea of a TWR reactor. The Traveling Wave reactor seems to be an answer to finding clean power (does not release greenhouse gases) and it runs on depleted Uranium. It is a nuclear reactor being developed by TerraPower which is a startup energy company helped by the Bill and Melinda Foundation. While the author does seem to write from a unbiased perspective, they seem to support the development of this reactor.

Some of the pros of legalizing marijuana are that it can be taxed, law enforcement could be doing more productive things with their time and that whether one smokes it should be their own decision. Some of the cons include that marijuana could possibly lead to other drugs and that long term use could be harmful.

This is an interesting perspective that made sense to me. Teaching students to express emotions helps them to relate to the outside world which promotes tolerance.
  •
I agree with what Chelsea said, this is a good article that reminds us that we should be in tune with our emotions and to teach students in school about this.

Should Kids Wear School Uniforms - 2 views

  •
This website talks about the different opinions of whether or not kids should wear school uniforms. This article says that school uniforms may help prevent violence and make a better learning environment. The article also gives other possible benefits of wearing school uniforms.

This link is not working for me. I wish it did. My kids used to attend a school where uniforms were required. Now they attend a school with no uniform policy. I would be interested to read this article and see another person's perspective and how it compares to my own.
  •
I personally have never been a fan of school uniforms for my own children but I can understand how they are warranted in some districts. Some parents may not be able to affront the things other students have making them feel inferior; this allows for everyone to maintain the same sense of self without being picked on.
  •
I can see both sides to this issue but honestly I think that children should be able to pick what they want to wear appropriate of course but to be able to have that voice through clothing when they might not have a voice in general can do a lot of a child I think.
