Study Finds Majority of Kids Lagging in Cognitive Skills By 3rd Grade - 1 views

  •
A recent report released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation suggests that only about one-third of children in grade school meet expectations in cognitive ability by 3rd grade. Additionally, children from low-income families were much less likely to be on track in areas such as physical development, social/emotional growth, and school engagement. The report noted a distinct relation between family education and earnings. According to the data collected from families of children under the age of 8, half of the families who earned a higher income had a head of household with at least a 4-year college degree. In contrast, the head of household in the majority of low-income families had at best a high school diploma.

This is such a shame, and I am sure this is very frustrating for both parents and teachers. I really enjoyed helping in my daughters' classes but did see firsthand students who were struggling. Funding for education is not where it should be so classes don't have aides and assistants to spend extra time working with kids who need additional help.

Family Violence - 0 views

  •
As the years pass, family violence seems to be more common. A home is meant to be a safe pace, but sadly in certain situations it can be scary. It is crazy to think that in other countries family violence is not a crime. The most important issue stated in this article is of course young children raised within these negative households. The rate of them becoming violent later in life is very high.

DRM Business Model in the Works for 3D Printing Designs - 0 views

  •
Before 3-dimensionial printing has had a chance to become a popular household trend, a company named Authentise has already set up a business model to protect other companies from "physical piracy" of their intellectual property. The service will allow users to buy official designs for 3D printing, but will limit the number of copies a user can print before the design is destroyed.

http://lesbianlife.about.com/cs/families/a/adoption_2.htm Original: In fact, scientific studies have shown that children who grow up in one or two-parent gay or lesbian households fare just as well emotionally and socially as children whose parents are heterosexual. Studies have shown that children are more influenced by their interactions with their parents, than by their sexual orientation. With this in mind, the American Association of Pediatrics supports gay and lesbian couples adopting children. Paraphrase: In truth, scientific studies have shown that children who grow up in one or two-parent gay or lesbian homes function just as well emotionally and socially as children whose parents are not gay or lesbian. Based on studies, the interactions children have with their parents are more influential than the sexual orientation of their parents. The American Association of Pediatrics keeps this in mind, and is supportive of homosexual couples adopting children

Should men get paternity leave from work? - 2 views

  •
Do you believe men should get paternity leave from work? This site provides both sides to whether fathers should get time off of work to help raise and care for their children or not. Comment below your thoughts!

I noticed that some of the arguments against men getting paternity leave are that the women do all of the work, so the men do not deserve it. I think this is a foolish argument because it is contradicting. If the mom does all of the hard work, why not give the father paternity leave in order to help her with the baby? The father cannot do anything about the growing baby in her stomach and all of the side effects that come with it, however, he can help feed the baby, change the baby, and put the child to sleep. It is not a vacation, it is time given to spend with their newborn child and assist in one of the most difficult phases of being a parent.

I fully support this debate. Men should be afforded the right to be a parent just as much as a mother is.
  •
I agree, men should be able to get time off from work so they can also spend time with their new baby!

I had a conversation with a coworker recently. We didn't understand why men are not offered Paternity leave at several companies including the one I work for. I believe that men need the time to bond with their children just as much as the mother does.

I would have loved it if my husband could have taken time off from work when my children were born. Things aren't as clearly defined as they used to be. There aren't mens jobs and womens jobs. My husband helped me with all of my children, as well as working a full time job. It's up to each family to decide what works for them. We have stay at home dads now and moms who work and everything in between.

This is an interesting topic, that I haven't herd before. It should be up to the man. although the women are the ones who are actually pregnant...

I would have loved if my husband could have had paternity leave from work when I had my children. It also depends on the circumstances in the family household. Can they afford for both to be on leave?

This website is a debating website that states a question and shows you people's responses from both sides (yes or no.) It doesn't necessarily hold factual information from one person, but can give insightful opinions or facts from a lot of people to help build your own argument.

Child labour - 0 views

  •
Universally, there are about 168 million children who are working in labour. They make not even close to a dollar an hour and they don't even have time to attend school and to work on their futures. Terre des Hommes is dedicated to millions of these kids who have to take on the most dreadful kinds of child labour. For example, they are forced into prostitution and to be household slaves. They are also obligated to work in factories, mines and, plantations.
