Getting married matters if same sex couples want to get the same benefits as heterosexual married couples. Couples of the same sex want to marry for the same reasons as heterosexual so why deny them the rights. Here are the benefits same sex couples don't get as a family.

Denying Same sex marriages of the same rights at opposite sex marriages punishes them and takes away from the freedoms of america. Some examples are inheritance, parenting, housing and insurance. Many companies don't allow same sex marriages to get benefits that others might get.

Same sex-couples will be subject to the same tax laws as heterosexual married couples. Even if a same-sex couple later moves to a state which does not recognize their marriage, the IRS will still recognize them as married.

Should we stick with the traditional way of life where a man and woman get married and have children, or should we branch out and allow everyone the freedom to love and marry whoever they want?
