This article supports banning smoking in public places.  Studies show that there have been positive health and economic impacts where these bans have been implimented.

In 1998 the individual soda intake was at its highest, averaging a surprising 56.1 gallons. Six years later in 2004, carbonated soft drinks had a 7 percent decline in individual consumption. In addition, replacing regular soda with diet soda helped decrease the intake of caloric beverages an impressive 12 percent. Health problems like obesity and being overweight result from the lack of nutrients in these beverages. The widespread issues are due to high rise consumption rates of these carbonated soft drinks. Liquid candy is statistically proven to be a prime factor for excessive weight increase. A problem for our population following the increase is the Type 2 diabetes. These health issues can lead to long term illnesses and sometimes life threatening diseases such as heart attacks, strokes and cancer.

Here are some pros and cons of our current technology that we use on a daily basis. There also are some solutions or ideas on ways to get the benefits from technology without the negative side effects. The information covers the effect on our adolescence more than our adults.

This is a topic that has always interested me as electronic devices have become like a second heart to so many teens- they feel that they can't live without it. I think the biggest negative side effect would be the access the devices give them to things that can harm their self esteem. For example, I've seen teen girls scroll through their Instagram feed, saying how they wish they looked like this girl, or her life looks so great, which can harm their feelings of self worth if they are constantly doing this.

Lots of treatment options are available for the ones who are suffering from these disorders. One is psychotherapy by talking to a psychologist, about 50% of these patients are suffering from depression. Another kind of treatment is a cognitive behavioral therapy where you set goals and helps change unhealthy thought patterns. Nutritional counseling is also a treatment by eating healthier to maintain your body healthy. However, some patients need a medically supervised diet to get back to a healthy weight.

Eating disorders are very common in today's society, but there are patients who have faced eating disorders and overcome them. With the treatment of therapy, counseling, and a supervised diet, many people who suffer from eating disorders can learn how to defeat them and avoid the possibility of facing the disorder again.

The scary part of eating disorders is how deadly they can be. The more a person starves themselves, the more muscles are eaten up; including the heart. I think it would interesting to see how eating disorders manifest in different cultures or minority groups. I know that eating disorders for women can be different from that of men and the method of treating that is also interesting.

The article talks about a book on how animals should have rights as in equal consideration. Animals have the ability to suffer as well as a human being. Why should or should not animals have rights?

I loved this! Animals have such a huge place in my heart and definitely deserve all the rights as us humans do. I hate hearing stories or seeing videos posted on Facebook of animals being neglected.. I don't understand how some people can do such a thing to an animal who cannot even defend themselves. They just want to be loved and nurtured.

The article made some great points. Animals do suffer. They feel pain and fear. Because of this, they definitely should be given rights. Like the article stated, I grew up eating meat, but have made the transition into vegetarianism thanks to my wife who is a vegan. All it took was for me to be educated on where our meat is coming from and the conditions of the animals being slaughtered. If people could read these types of articles and watch documentaries like "Earthlings" and "Cowspiracy" I am sure they might also consider vegetarianism or veganism.

This article states how animal cruelty is getting bigger all over the world. This one is about the cruelty of horses and how people kill them for terrible use.

It actually breaks my heart seeing stuff like this. Horses? Why would horses need to be killed. The fact that 80% of Americans voted for this baffles me.

In this report it talks about foster kids and what happens to them after they turn 18. While some states, a small handful, have programs for the kids others do not. It spoke about kids turning 18 then getting dropped off at homeless shelters. I hope in the near future there will be a change for these kids. They crime rate, young parent rate and homeless rates are just not acceptable. Please read and see how you can help in you community.

There was a group home next door to my home for years. These kids had no support even when they were in the system. They were often locked out of the home when the state workers needed to go somewhere. My family and I ended up being family for many of these children. One afternoon, Charles who lived in the group home, rang our doorbell. I came out and he was yellow and falling over. I asked him where are the workers. He let me know they had locked them out again. I put him in my car and rushed him to the hospital. I knew it was bad when the emergency room nurses took him immediately. The staff at the group home had been giving him the wrong medication and he lost most of his liver. Charles calls me mom. His children call me Grandma. A lot of the kids that were living in the home, call me mom. I refer to them as one of my kids. The best way to take care of these children is to invite them into your heart, lives and family before and after they turn 18. Demonstrate the way to success by showing them love.

This website is interesting. I also posted about foster care, which in a sense is homelessness of children due to being unsafe at home. I do a lot of volunteer work with homeless people. For some reason they have a special spot in my heart.

Fighting homelessness is a great cause. Too often, assumptions are made about homeless individuals. Assumptions like: they're addicts, drunks, lazy, and more. Many homeless people suffer from mental illness. Some are veterans, and deserve more from the country they served.

In this site you'll learn about the parents who are living under dangerous conditions in the Bronx. Where 90% of families live in poverty and are expected to meet circumstances that most higher income parents fail to meet. These parents are being falsely charged with unintentional neglect.

It breaks my heart to read stories like these. Sleeping in a closet is just not normal and no one should have to live like that. I feel that not enough is being done to try to help those in actual poverty.

This article explains how children in lower-class families in Moldova have a very low opportunity to participate in early education. The author talks about how this can be a disadvantage for their future.

This article was somewhat heart breaking to read. It talks about the differences in attendance of children in Moldova between early education and secondary education. Many of the children are not passing the exams when reaching the secondary education, thus some tend to drop out or many do not even attend at all.

Lower-class families are having this problem everywhere and its a problem that needs to be fixed because it damages the future of these students and their possible careers.

One third of children in the U. S. is overweight or obese, and this number is continuing to rise. Children have fewer weight-related health and medical problems than adults. However, overweight children are at high risk of becoming overweight adolescents and adults, placing them at risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes later in life.

Obesity in children is often sad to see but it is becoming very prevalent in American society. In my opinion, a mixture of an extremely sedentary lifestyle as well as poor nutritional choices at school and at home contribute largely to this issue. Because children now have a multitude of indoor activities that don't necessarily get them on their feet and a lack of overall knowledge on what is a decent, balanced diet I'm not really surprised to see this issue skyrocketing.

Obesity is still rising especially because of the pandemic that we are going through which made families quarantine for a long time. It is very sad that the obesity rates only have increased.

I also bookmarked an article about child obesity. It is very informative on statistics about child obesity and how much it is growing.

I also found that not only obesity is linked to diseases and disabilities but it can affect a person mentally. The article I found explained how a persons mental health is what makes the process of preventing obesity more challenging

Over the years many innocent men and women have been wrongful convicted of crimes they never committed. Each day many are proven innocent and finally able to see loves ones and walk as free men and women again.

My heart hurts for people who are wrongly incarcerated. After they are released it isn't enough to apologize or give them large amounts of money. There are no transitional programs to reintegrate them into society. It's usually up to local organizations to help people get back on their feet.

Wrongful incarceration is a really big deal in our country. Black men and women especially are being incarcerated at higher rates due to petty crimes or crimes they didn't even commit and I think that really needs to be fixed.

This article focuses on the fear between immigrants and receiving covid vaccines. It has been stated by the DHA that immigration officials will not be arresting any immigrant who wishes to receive a vaccine. They believe everyone should receive one regardless of legal status in order to help fight the pandemic.

This article provides information on how the pandemic has effected us, humans / people, as a whole. It states that no immigrant will be detained or arrested when getting vaccinated and / or needing emergency assistance. It shows how people and government agencies are working together to fight the pandemic.

This article is very heart-warming, as it describes how the authorities will not arrest illegal immigrants at vaccine drives. The authors do raise the question about what happens to illegal immigrants after receiving the vaccine. The U.S. has a history of mishandling Immigration. COVID only complicates the situation.
