NEA - It's Time to Push for Free College. Education is Key - 2 views

I think this is a great topic. Since, we are all in college and know first hand the expenses of college. This article argues to push for free college. He talks about a college in Georgia where they have scholarships for free college. I think this is rather interesting!

This is an interesting thought however, I feel that too easily the system would get bogged down. Also, the money to pay for this free college would have to come from tax-payers. In reality I don't see how it would work. I know in Germany college is free IF a student has a certain score on a standardized test, so that the government sees the student as a worthwhile investment. It sounds harsh, but it works. I think in America too many things would cause that rule to be derailed. Also, Germany has as much smaller and homogeneous population, so that works better.

I am a person who is all for free education..in theory. Like Amanda, I do not believe it would be beneficial to provide the United States with free education because we as the tax papers would suffer. However, I do wish the government would make it so that we are not in such crippling debt once our education is over.
  •
As much as I would love to see free education, it would not be free because it would come down to the average tax payer to pay for it. I do however wish to see lower interest rates.
  •
I wish education could be 100% free. Everyone is always pushing us younger people to pursue a college degree without knowing that college isn't just a sign up and go kind of thing. You have to pay thousands of dollars either out of pocket or by federal funding.

Personal Freedoms and the Internet - 0 views

  •
Freedom to make bad decisions is inherent in the freedom to make good ones. If we are only free to make good decisions, we are not really free. I can assure you of this - once the government gains a foothold into regulating the internet, even for benevolent reasons, the wonders of the free internet will soon be a thing of the past.

Freedom of Speech and How It Applies to the Internet - 0 views

  •
There are a lot of people talking about freedom of speech on the internet these days. Some sites say they stand for free speech, but does the first amendment apply to them? Where are we free to speak our minds on the internet?

I really do think that there could be more benefits to free collage than negatives, that is until I read this article. So many valid points, its hard to know who's side I'm really on.

This article splitting the pros and cons of free college was a interesting way for the reader to determine after reading whether they agree or disagree.

Education Should Be Free for Everyone - 2 views

  •
Information can readily be absorbed when it is relevant to human purpose. The proper focus of authentic education is not ingestion and disgorgement of information like trained seals clapping their flippers on command but a development process that leads to critical thinking and life-long learning skills.

I agree, many other countries already have free education. I bet the wage gap would definitely benefit from the country having a free education system in the United States.
  •
I agree with this I think education should always be free. Everyone should be able to get a decent education even if they are not financially well off.
  •
I feel there would be more to benefit from having a higher population of educated individuals. These people would have more to contribute to society and the economy, so there would be more to gain in the long run.
  •
I agree with this education should be free. Lots of people don't go to college for the fact that they cant afford to go. President Biden has canceled student loans which I think was really good of him to do. I know people who are in debt due to this.
  •
Education overall has so many social issues carved into it, cost being one of the major ones. Even just cutting down the cost would help. but we are one of the most expensive countries to attend college in. Like the article you linked states, student loans and the excessive amount people spend on an education results in them becoming bankrupt before even starting out.

Racism or free speech? Debate rages over Arizona frat's MLK party | Detroit Free Press ... - 0 views

  •
Here is another article about free speech in universities. Recently a fraternity at ASU held a party on Martin Luther King day that displayed behavior that is offensive to African Americans. Now that the school is planning on punishing them, people are wondering whether expulsion would be too severe and if any punishment would be infringing on the students' freedom of speech.

"Colleges are starting to put restrictions on "free speech" to protect students from harassment. There seems to be a blurred line as to whether this infringes on students' first amendment rights, or if the schools have the right to make these restrictions. "

Free higher education - 0 views

  •
This article argues the point that higher education should be free for a couple reasons. One of the reasons is why pay more to take the required classes for a specific field when once in the field the training received is very different. The author also suggests a solution to cutting the cost for higher education and improving the quality .

Healthcare access to everyone? - 1 views

  •
Healthcare is an issue that is present today, especially with the election that just occurred. Some believe that everyone should have free access to healthcare and note that if other countries can do it, so can we. The other believe that it is the individuals personal responsibility to figure out how they are going to get it and believe that universal coverage would be too expensive.
  •
I agree completely. It is possible and other countries have proven it. It's just a matter of rejecting the lobbyists, insurance companies, and pharmaceuticals that make money off of private citizens. Healthcare should be a basic human right and not something that can cause you to go bankrupt.

Free Speech and Public Schools - 0 views

  •
Freedom of Speech is a right on public school grounds, with of course exceptions. Anyone can reveal their views as long as it can be stopped with no issue. Students and teachers have different rights when it comes to this. School employees have protection when the issue is public, but not when it is related to sensitive subjects, such as school policies. The First Amendment Free Speech is consistently changing and always comes into act today.
