The politics of welfare - 0 views

  •
On the surface, conservatism and Christian democratic thought are quite similar with regard to social welfare, but there is one key difference.  Following the Catholic teachings, Christian Democrats believe that the responsibility of taking care of the poor and needy lies with the community, not the government.  Both groups feel that lawfulness and stability are highly important, but they have very different approaches to achieve these goals.

Foster Care Advocates | Foster Coalition - 0 views

  •
Many children are in foster care. There is a high volume of children who stay in foster care for a long period of time and sometimes "age out". Aging out is when the minor turns 18years of age and is still in foster care. The social justice issue is that these children have a higer chance of going to orison, human trafficking and pregnancy. We need to do something as a society to help these children achieve something in there life. There are so many children who still get abused in the foster system as well. What needs to be done to prevent this from happening? More home visits to foster homes, better screening, and maybe even just a all around better system.

Same-Sex Marriage Isn't About Freedom - 0 views

  •
His description of how this happened is almost backwards: freedom and individualism are not to blame. the conservative thinker Frank Meyer emphasized, by freeing the individual, Christianity created a tension between its high standards-to be perfect as the Father is perfect, to turn the other cheek-and the impossibility of achieving them. What we see today in the success of gay marriage is not really freedom run amok, but the result of turning the power to define morality over to the state, or to the dominant group representing it.

Get Answers: What is the Common Core? - 0 views

  •
The goal of most educators is to have students achieve major goals in school and proceed on to college and a career with the foundation that is provided in schools. The state has approved a list of standards of education, also called Common Core. Teachers use these standards in the classroom and test the students to discover if these standards are helping the students learn. The students will take a standardized test to evaluate on how well the students have learned from the Common Core. If the students cannot achieve these set goals, educators and teachers will have to revise the strategies to teacher their students the Common Core.

The amount of parents refusing vaccination for their children is increasing. Even delaying vaccination for you child is putting them in danger. Parent's are referring to discredited theories as to why they chose to not vaccinate their child.
  •
Its funny because I was just involved in a conversation the other day about the hpv shot for kids. This parent was asking a group of other parents what they thought about the shot so she could decide whether to get her daughter the shot or not. I think that parents are sadly misinformed about these shots and immunizations. Several parents told her vehemently to not get the shot because their kids had a reaction. I did get the shot for all of my kids and they had no side effects. I think parents forget that there are symptoms because these kids are getting a dose of a live virus in most cases so their immune system learn how to fight it in bigger doses.

Hi all, I am a parent of three. All of my kids are current on all vaccines recommended by their PCP. I am a true believer. That being said I do think something could be changed for the vaccine requirements. I have spoken to many people about this in my area. I'm actually scared for the un-vaccinated kids so it always sparks curious conversations for me. The common denominator I found with everyone I have spoken to about not vaccinating their kids is, they don't want to vaccinate all at once, they want to spread it out. I feel it's a greater risk to wait or not get a child vaccinated period, but I'm wondering for those who are just not educated on the facts of vaccines or those who are afraid of all of them at once maybe they can have a different vaccine protocol. While it won't be what the CDC recommends initially, I feel that it would still be better than not vaccinating period.
  •
I agree with my colleagues above, the ignorance about vaccines is becoming widespread. We are in an age of refined medical practices and innovation based on factual evidence and research. Parents in doubt should consider two words. (Herd Immunity) for those unfamiliar with its meaning I'll leave you with its definition - the resistance to the spread of a contagious disease within a population that results if a sufficiently high proportion of individuals are immune to the disease, especially through vaccination. "the level of vaccination needed to achieve herd immunity varies by disease but ranges from 83 to 94 percent" We all have a stake in this.

Why poverty is not a personal choice, but a reflection of society - 1 views

  •
The societal structure and the culture of a nation play a significant role in police making for the impoverished. People living below the poverty line are not poor as a direct result of bad decisions and laziness. An individual cannot simply think there way out of poverty. There must be an energy put toward overcoming cultural biases and send the message that no one achieves significant change alone.

National holidays are more than just a day off | Opinion | laloyolan.com - 1 views

  •
This article explains how us as American do not look into the true meaning of a holiday and what it is supposed to entail. Labor Day,for example is "a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country." This article urges us to have more thoughtful conversations about where ur holidays are actually coming from.
  •
This article got me thinking about what the holidays to me truly mean. I know the basics of the holidays I celebrate but I do agree that myself and others need to spend the extra minute to google what these holidays truly mean.
