How states are dealing with older drivers - 2 views

  •
The article covers the personal freedom issue of whether or not older people should be allowed to drive. This article introduces different ideas of how different states are dealing with older drivers. Some states are requiring more frequent testing, or some sort of evaluation.

I do feel that states should have people at a certain age be tested more often. I work in Sun City and almost everyday I see an accident or someone driving where they should not be driving.
  •
I think that once you get to a certain age that if you still want to drive you should be required to get tested again to be sure that you will be okay out on the road, its nothing against older people driving its more of a safety issue and I see that in this article. More frequent testing is the right move for the states that are starting to require that. Hopefully soon that will show all over America.
  •
I think this is a great article. I think for a lot of elderly people the possibility of having their drivers license taken away makes them feel as if they just lost that piece of end independent living. I do agree the elderly should be tested to make sure they aren't at great risks for accidents. This articles speaks about classes older people can take to help them be safer drivers. I this is a great article to share with many people.
  •
Long story short. All elders should go through REGULAR testing to continue to drive! These old people are really acting out! This article helps identify lots of points that need to be taken to keep our elders safe!

The Great Barrier Reef is dying - The Washington Post - 1 views

  •
This summary discusses the killing of the Great Barrier Reef at the hand of humans. Temperature increases are introducing coral reefs to disease and death from lack of algae. The Trump administration has cut funds severely to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Natural Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Talk of the U.S being withdrawn from the Paris climate deal have been discussed as well.
  •
If the United States decides to pull out of the Paris climate deal, I believe that we will be to blame for the state our planet is in. Our country is driven by consumerism, causing mothers to follow in our footsteps. If we can step in the right direction toward a clean, green society, we can then start to tackle climate change.

Scientists predict the future effects of climate change according reports. Temperatures will continue to increase, and seasons will lengthen. There will be more frequent extreme weather and a rise in sea level.
  •
Climate change is too often ignored, I'm glad that NASA has ongoing updates about the situation. More people should be accessing this site in order to educate themselves.
  •
This is a great article it is also important to know that if we don't get on track it could be too late to reverse the damage. Also how deserts would become even worse wastelands and the weather would be too extreme on earth to be inhabitable.
  •
Using NASA as a source for climate change is great. This is a great web source for being able to quickly see what scientists are saying in active research.
  •
I found this article to be very informative on the effects of climate change. I was not aware that hurricanes would become worse and growing seasons increase.

On Gun Control and the Great American Debate Over Individualism - 0 views

  •
This article says how gun control got loose over the last 2 decades and crime rates have gone down. Therefore, more control wouldn't really help bring down crime. It says how the argument is going no where fast and that no changes will end up being made.
  •
Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, and New York passed restrictive laws concerning thirty-round magazines and various weapons based on characteristics - like pistol grips and flash hiders - that have nothing to do with a gun's lethality. The State Department immediately demanded that he take the code down, which he did, although once something is on the Internet it is beyond anybody's control - precisely Wilson's point - and the plastic gun has already been photographed in Europe, well beyond the State Department's control.

NIMH " Eating Disorders - 3 views

Explore information about eating disorders, including signs and symptoms, treatment, research and statistics, and clinical trials. Examples of eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder.

Definitely a common thing I've seen in the fitness industry. People can sometimes get so wrapped up in trying to be lean and fit that they go about it in the wrong ways. They literally workout to the point of exhaustion and then barely refuel their bodies with the necessary nutrients. Which causes more harm than good.
  •
Eating disorders are a tragedy, and a sickness. It is definitely evident in this country, more so than where I come form in Canada, as image is more important in America according to studies, appearance can take someone further than education, which is truly sad. Which leads to more people being self conscious, and more eating disorders.
  •
Eating disorders affect a great deal of American teenagers and young adults, and a big reason is because society sets standards as to what a male or female's ideal body should look like. Rather than trying to live up to society's standards, people should try to live up to a standard of health for their own bodies.
  •
This social issue has been around for many years and it is still a huge issue in the world. I like this article due to the fact that it gives you information on the disorders such as treatments, signs and statistics. All people should be educated on the subject.
  •
I think that this situation is sort of a "hush hush" situation so I think it is great that people are talking out about it. If more people talk about it, then maybe people that are suffering from situations like this can be open about it and about getting help. I also think that people opening up about it, will open up societies eyes and realize that people are suffering from this mostly because of the pressure people have to look how society wants.
  •
People are so wrapped up on having the perfect body that they fail to realize their hurting themselves. Eating disorders are very tragic, but are also very common these days. We start to think that just because one plan worked for someone else it will work for everyone. The truth is, everyone's body is different and reacts differently too.

Kids are Learning to Not Ask Questions - 2 views

  •
This article features Ken Robinson; a prominent public speaker. In it he discusses how children are being taught the answers and denied the freedom of asking questions.
  •
Really great read!!! This article really digs deep into so many issues our educational system has today. I feel strongly about all of the authors assertions and hope soon we make some changes.
  •
Great find, the article it very well written and the topic alone is something to really just think about, I agree that children are becoming much more shy when it comes to asking questions and instead of being told there is no stupid question they just go on not understanding because they didn't want to ask someone a question that they had concerns about.

20 Life Skills Not Taught In School. - 1 views

  •
I found this article to be my favorite, in the article it lists 20 life skills not taught in school, from communication and thinking to learning how to build credit and get insurance. This made me really think how I didn't learn any of those skills that I use everyday now when I was in school. It even talks about how the bible, cooking, guns, and finding a job all play a big part in adult life.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
Wow, great find! I have three children and my husband and I are always trying to teach them just about everything listed in this article. Years ago many of those things were taught in some degree. Now it seems like they don't touch much on these at all. I know there are classes when you are older you can go too, but I think all of these subject could be taught to some degree in the classroom setting. I also think that if they were maybe our economy would be better, because our future adult citizens (kids in school) will have a better understanding of what it takes and how to get a head to be a responsible citizen.
  •
Thanks for sharing this, you're right this is a great article! There are so many skills that the public education system is not teaching, yet they are super important and critical for everyone to acquire.
  •
I think this article is really cool. It shows really important skills that aren't taught in school that you don't even realize till you actually think about it. Many day to day things aren't taught in school but things that we will never use are taught.

Trump's Executive Order on Immigration: What We Know and What We Don't - 1 views

  •
This article breaks down the executive order signed by President Trump on banning refugees from middle eastern countries. It also talks about what we haven't found out about the order itself like if airports are complying with the order.
  •
Immigration is a very sensitive topic in the current political climate. There are many benefits to this executive order, and many consequences. National Security is something that out-scopes us all in my opinion, but staying as close to the information power curve as possible with sound sources is a great place to start. I would however question the validity of the NYT (New York Times), only on the grounds of ill reporting. Following the presidential election, the NYT issued an apology for misreporting the polls during the election. I am of the opinion that when dealing with such an emotionally fueled topic, Primary Sources are the only sources that yield direct information. Perhaps you could have sited an administration member or even an analytical specialist assessing the direct executive order. In the end however, I am not the instructor. Great topic!
