The games section is comprised of popular games like chess, checkers, sudoku, and common word games. The Mentalrobics section of Braingle is what makes it worth mentioning. Mentalrobics includes memory tests, flashcards, and vocabulary building activities. The vocabulary builder activities require users to register for a free Braingle account. To help users practice more effectively the Braingle vocabulary builder tracks the words users know and the ones they don't.

This would be a good site to have available to students on a moodle or wiki as a student resource. It would be very helpful when students are writing and want to vary their words.

Lingro provides an on-line environment that allows anyone learning a language to quickly look up and learn the vocabulary most important to them. You place a web address within this site and all the words on that web page will become clickable.

This site would be really helpful for those students who are struggling readers and often don't know the meanings of words they are reading.

VocabGenii is a free online vocabulary building game. Each round is only 90 seconds, and you can play anytime, anywhere you have Internet access.

This was addicting. There are a variety of vocab games you can play. I like the one where you are given a type of speech and a definition and you have to unscramble the words from those two clues. You have to create an account for this one. When you want to log off at the top of the play screen you will see a door icon and that is how you log out.

Great site for those learning english. The teacher section has some good videos on idioms. There is a words in the news vocab section. There is a section about slang and phrases in English. There are videos and recordings and quizzes to help you learn about and practice English prononciation.

The English-Zone.Com is owned and operated by Kaye Mastin Mallor, an ESL teacher in Fyullerton.CA. This is a fun site for middle or high school students who are learning English as a Second Language, or for native speakers who are brushing up on their English grammar skills. Students can learn some idioms, practice with English verbs, play vocabulary games, check out the fun stuff page, win a million bananas, or write a silly story. Teachers will also find ready-to-print materials, in-class activities, and worksheets as well as links to other English sites.

Karl Fisch's blog post 12/7/2008 a website where students (or anyone) can practice building their vocabulary and at the same time donate rice to the United Nations World Food Program. Additonal subjects include Art, Chemistry, English, Geography, Languages, and Math.

"This lesson uses the four modalities of reading (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) on a math word problem to bridge the gap between reading and math. After a read-aloud from the book Math Curse by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, students create their own word problems with answers. Students solve each other's problems. As they reread the word problems, fluency and comprehension increase. Finally, students use the skills they've learned creating word problems to complete a crossword puzzle. As students read the math concept words presented in the puzzle and write the correct answers, their reading and writing math vocabulary skills increase."

The games incorporate multiplayer capabilities in educational gaming. Studetns can play together in groups of 4, 8, or 12 at a time, promoting positive interaction and achievement. Educators can use the free arcade-like games with a projector screen, interactive whiteboard, or computer lab. Security safeguards ensure that no one outside the classroom can contact students who are playing the games. The games align with state standards and the Common Core Standards.

Sharing this again as there have been some additions to that that I think will be very helpful for teachers grades K-8.
