FTC publishing. Greate ideas for the classroom and possibly the next generation of publishing for new authors.

Creating slideshows can be an excellent way for students to summarize their learning, share their what they've learned, and to share their ideas. If you have students that create slideshows that you or they think should be shared with a wider audience than that of their immediate peers in the classroom, the web offers many ways to do that. The following are ten free ways for students to publish their slideshows to the web.

Interesting new tool for creating theme magazines by gathering information from the web. Themeefy is a free service that lets you discover and curate knowledge from the Web, publish it in the form of a magazine and share it with your social networks.This is a private beta release, so things might break sometimes! 

Through its Copyright Advisory Group, the Australian Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) has published a Creative Commons information pack online, a bundle of eight documents that distills the basics of CC licensing and the philosophy behind it. This pack is a great resource for educators and students, and we encourage you to use it in your schools by adapting it however you like. "BookRix allows writers to create their own projects and display their work to others. The BookRix-Format enables users to design individual books. All one needs is a web browser to easily publish and showcase their work." Book-like interface, where readers can "turn pages". Great way of showcasing student work, getting feedback, producing rather than just consuming material. The interface does provide a more formal presentation of material and makes a more published feel.

 We at Apps in Education believe that the iPad has caused a major shift in education and in the publishing industry. From textbook publishers, to education software companies, everyone is taking notice of this benchmark in education technology.  As an educator, I've seen this shift first hand as I visit classroom, and as I track the adoption of the mobile technology in education.

Nice resource for accessing picture books in the classroom or publishing picture books online. You may have seen it or some sites like it.

Not all books are free, but a great way to integrate picture books using the LCD projector or Smartboard and a tool to allow students to publish their own picture books

Use your twitter or facebook feeds to create a newspaper to really maximize your PLN. Paper.li links to posted links, and puts them into categories.  Similar to PostPost for Facebook. Check out this great example: http://paper.li/ITLynda If you have a classroom twitter account this would be a great way of organizing all of the classes  tweets into publishable 'paper'

Pixton is a global community where people of all ages create, publish, share, and remix comics - without having to draw!

OK, I'm not an artist but I SEE this as a tool for writing to learn and writing to publish. I think it would allow students to express their understandings in different ways and then be able to share to a wide audience. If you have a pentab computer this would be an awesome tool to use with kids, because it's easier to export than microsoft journal drawings.

This wiki will be open during the month of November, 2008 as an accompaniment to our just published EDUCAUSE Review article, Web 2.0 Storytelling: Emergence of a New Genre in which we propose that the new tools and forms of online creation represent a new genre of storytelling and creative expression. We have set this site up partly to add a few additional resources, but more so to engage you in an open discussion where you can push back against our ideas or share more examples.
