From a review of the literature and interviews with individuals in the field of education, we developed an activitybased model to associate the uses of mobile technology with their benefits. The model first identifies the general uses of mobile technology in education and the specific activities that they encompass. Then, the benefits from their uses are identified with overarching themes emerging as follows: greater efficiencies and effectiveness in learning, increased individual support and opportunities for personal development, better methods of collaborating and communicating and greater exposure to technology.

Winners will receive awards for learning environments and digital media-based experiences that allow young people to grapple with social challenges through activities based on the social nature, contexts, and ideas of science, technology, engineering and math. Digital media of any type (social networks, games, virtual worlds, mobile devices or others) may be used. Proposals are also encouraged for curricula or other experiences that link or connect to any game. Learning labs may be designed around new games or expand the potential of open source or commercial games."

Continuing discussion of two issues that are at the forefront of our work. 

Even as it "disruptively" transforms American education, blended learning is itself being slowly reshaped into new and distinctive forms. A report released this week identified six emerging models for blended learning in K-12, ranging from guided online instruction in the classroom to "self-blended" models where students take courses a la carte.

 We at Apps in Education believe that the iPad has caused a major shift in education and in the publishing industry. From textbook publishers, to education software companies, everyone is taking notice of this benchmark in education technology.  As an educator, I've seen this shift first hand as I visit classroom, and as I track the adoption of the mobile technology in education.

The Nielsen report on internet use and social networking/blogging. Blogging/social networking is still the number one destination online, followed closely by gaming. It's interesting the populations that are growing, and the massive growth of mobile! 

s the use of computing and networking technologies in schools grows, educators increasingly incorporate online tools and resources into their curricula-some even replace traditional classroom interactions with "virtual" courses that take place entirely online. At the same time, administrators are concerned with helping students develop 21st century skills while bridging the digital divide between students and adults. To address emerging trends in education, Project Tomorrow, a national education nonprofit group and Blackboard have joined together to bring you Education in the 21st Century, a series of reports that include data from the SpeakUp Survey, which shed light on issues related to learning and leading in K-12 education.

Nice well-rounded iPad Launch Proposal from Miguel Guhlin. He is thorough in his plan, and the plan is on-going, long-term, developmental, and shows what success would look like for teachers.  He is upfront about using some of the great ideas of others, and asks for feedback to make it even better. if you are looking for a great framework for working with teachers on developing teacher capacity using mobile devices this is a good place to start. 

Interesting image sharing App/Site that uses a cell phone App to share nature images with geolocation information. Very much like the citizen journalist movement that mobile devices has caused. We now can have citizen naturalists gathering information and sharing real-time.

Blog about Chris Geeen's iPod touch project at his school. Has some very interesting ideas about how students can create quick products from research on the iPod touch. Worth looking at if you have access to mobile learning tools not just iPod, although some of the apps are specific to the iPod.

Another interesting spin on drill and practice. I see this as an interesting tool for students in a 1:1 laptop setting. It runs from your desktop so it's not functional for mobile devices (as far as I can tell).

The typical student at the Newcomer Center, an alternative school in Township High School District 214 in Arlington Heights, IL, is a recent immigrant with little or no English skills. The school is a temporary stopover for these students--they stay at the center for about a year, building up their English-language skills, and are then transferred to an ESL program at their home school in the district.

Nice list of different ways to use QR codes. I still think that QR codes are great for teachers wanting to bridge the digital gap through printed materials in the classroom as well as for homework.

David Jakes does a great job of laying out a vision of what should be expected for classroom interactions through a digital platform but still isn't. I love his thinking about it not being a happy website with mission/vision but a place to collaborate and inform.  The 21st century is now not tomorrow!

Great presentation from Chris Lehman. What makes this presentation so powerful (besides the nice clean design) is the actual projects that are part of SLA.
