Knowtes - Online flashcard-based study and learning community - 0 views

  •
"Knowtes is a flashcard-based learning community." Students can design their own flashcards routine. I like this spin on the drill and practice idea for several reasons: I can customize how I interact with the material and MOST importantly of all I can create my own flashcards. I think the creation of the flashcards is critical for a number of reasons.

Capstone for Parents - 1 views

  • The capstone represents a synthesis of the SLA mission and vision as students attempt to answer the questions: “How do we learn?” “What can we create?” and “What does it mean to lead” through a self-selected and designed independent project.

Provide framework for project, but let students self-select and design independent project.
  •
Senior Capstone Project from SLA: "The Capstone Project at Science Leadership Academy is an opportunity for seniors to show the culmination of four years of intellectual growth towards an independent and self-directed learner who can contribute meaningfully to the community. It will enable students to focus their interests and curiosity into a coherent representation of how they think and what they believe as they leave high school. The capstone represents a synthesis of the SLA mission and vision as students attempt to answer the questions: "How do we learn?" "What can we create?" and "What does it mean to lead" through a self-selected and designed independent project. As with everything we do, it should embody the core values of inquiry, research, collaboration, presentation, and reflection. The final product will look different for each student, just as each student has a unique perspective and approach to learning."

There are lots of collaborative voting and comment sites out there - Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon and Metafilter is another one. It costs five dollars to join, but that cost keeps lots of spammers and ads off the site. A great plus.

How Important is Teaching Literacy in All Content Areas? | Edutopia - 2 views

  •
Edutopia is just confirming what we all know and believe. Why is it such a hard thing to implement well in the classroom?  We need to continue fighting for the chance for every student to have opportunities and expectations for communicating in class everyday as a regular/routine part of their learning.

The Synapse - 0 views

  •
A member of the Content Literacy Ning Sean Nash started this group to connect biology teachers from all over together. I love one of the premises of the group: "Step one in participation within The Synapse: read & explore. Step two: share. Be a resource. Help to create a synapse that communicates in both directions!"

New Tweetdeck Out Tomorrow, Here's What It Will Include - ReadWriteWeb - 0 views

  •
I don't use twitter this extensively, but if I were, then tweetdeck would be a must. I am going to explore and would love some ideas for why I should use this in my educational learning community? I need the value added. I can track stock quotes through other apps that are more effective, what do I need tweetdeck for?

Center for History and New Media - 1 views

  •
"What is Digital History? Digital history is an approach to examining and representing the past that takes advantage of new communication technologies such as computers and the Web. It draws on essential features of the digital realm, such as databases, hypertextualization, and networks, to create and share historical knowledge. Digital history complements other forms of history-indeed, it draws its strength and methodological rigor from this age-old form of human understanding while using the latest technology."

Is this the direction textbooks will take in the near future? The content is important and is the center of this idea. It's also slightly portable (downloadable, accessible on up t o3 computers, and able to print 30%). This site makes annotations possible and more importantly sharable! The content is supported by learning communities! I like this idea; you even have the possibility of sharing beyond your classroom walls.
