YAY MATH! Algebra Geometry Math Videos Online | Homework Help - 2 views

  •
he YAY MATH video project is a free service dedicated to meeting the growing need for math success in a POSITIVE, LIVELY, and CONFIDENCE BOOSTING way. YAY MATH stands as the only online video lesson series filmed in a live classroom, with real student interaction. Since its inception two years ago, and over a million YouTube views since, gone are the days of the "I just can't do math" style of thinking. It's time to evolve. It's time to re-invent our entire approach to success.

Feature Articles: Writing in Mathematics - Common Objections and FAQs - 0 views

  • Though much mathematics instruction focuses on representing ideas with symbols and manipulating those symbols, students still understand mathematics by linking those forms with meaning (Kessler, 1987).

I think this is one area that teachers working in content literacy struggle with. It takes a very different way of looking at mathematics instruction to value this opinion. I think many of the teachers acknowledge it, but few value it enough to invest the time to understand how to do it well. Our task then becomes to find out ways of enabling math teachers to incorporate writing activities that are well supported and successful.

It is true that we need to help math teachers with this, but it is also the realization from the math teachers that this concept is valid.
  • Start small. It takes a long time to grade writing, especially if you have large classes or teach multiple courses. “Start with one class or use a journal for a specific unit” (Brandenburg, 2002).

      A routine!
  • What kinds of writing activities should I have my students do?

I really liked the way the article listed these strategies. Considering math is my weakest area of understanding (due to not being able to read and comprehend the material in a fluent manner) these strategies make it easier to offer ideas as a literacy coach to math teachers.

NOte at the bottom of the article Stephanie's credentials. She's an English and French teacher by training. She iis writing the article because she is comfortable writing. Who can we get to write this article with us?

OK, this is a pretty cool game site that is all about teaching and learning. I played the multiplication game longer than I should have and even played with the pet hamster for a while. He runs on that whell a long time. From the website, "All games here were made by Exuberant Games. Each game goes through important information for a certain subject matter for grades Kindergarten through 6th grade. The math games are great if you need to review your math facts for addition, subtraction , or division. Be sure to check out our new games for other subjects.

Free Online Course Materials | MIT OpenCourseWare - 0 views

MIT Open Courseware. A great way for students to access material that may not be presented at their level anywhere else. For that matter a great place for teachers to brush up and expand their thinking. I spent about an hour on the combinatorics course developed by an MIT student for high school math students who are 'bored' by high school math classes. If you are interested, it pushed my understanding pretty quickly!

Half of Americans use social networks - Technology Live - USATODAY.com - 0 views

  •
Killing two birds with one stone. Here are some interesting facts about social networking and use among 35-54 yo age group growing by 60% recently according to Forrester. Also, if you are looking for a read-aloud to do with math students, here's a great example to use with them. The topic is social media, the content is proportional reasoning, data analysis, and interpreting real-world data. For example if usage among 35-54 yos has grown by 60% what does that mean among the sample of 4500, what does that mean among the sample of the US population, if previous usage was 15% of that age group, what percentage of that age group now use it? Etc. Good math/science reading is as close as your local USA Today/Yahoo homepage/iGoogle/news RSS

Conceptua™ Math - 2 views

Nice set of applets that let students explore fraction understanding from multiple perspectives and models. I love that they use a variety of models for fractional development, including bars (multiple versions), sets, and linear. From the site:  "Why Fractions? Fractions are one of the earliest stumbling blocks for students in math. Our goal is building conceptual understanding in fractions as a basis for comprehension in all later topics."

Math and Algebra Help - Videos from MathTV.com - 1 views

Math videos to help explain skills/concepts. Tends to be very skill based, but offers multiple takes on the same skill so if a students doesn't get it from one person the next might be a better fit, short videos makes it plausible that a student might use, GREAT integration of vocabulary. Well worth incorporating into classroom practice to help students understand how to use formulas or manipulate equations. Also they are GREAT models if you want kids to create their own.

Reflections of a High School Math Teacher: Using Flip Videos in High School Math Class - 3 views

Interesting approach to using flip in a mathematics classroom. I love having students create product rather than just solving problems. I would even like to see students create their own problems in the future.

twtpoll :: a simple survey/poll twitter app. - 0 views

Another educational use for twitter. Create a poll, tweet your question, gather your data, explore the data. Could be a social studies tool, a psychology tool, an English tool, a math tool, or science tool. I guess if you analyze the data you receive all the questions would be a math tool.

Motion Math - Move, play, learn! - 0 views

Great new number sense math app. Cost $0.99 at this time but uses: the capabilities of the iPhone well (motion, graphics), multiple representations including linear and circle models, decimals, fractions, percents. Is fast moving and progresses beyond 0 to 1 to have students estimating values like 0.26 on a number line from 0 to 2.

A collection of 279 Math Applets designed by International Education Software. Apps show individual concepts from multiple perspectives, usually conceptually from a diagram and graphically. Not very dynamic in that students wouldn't be able to manipulate multiple variables, but great to use with an interactive white board to show connections between representations and to confirm calculations/predictions.

Squares of Differences: subtraction practice toward a greater purpose | math for love - 1 views

Here is a phenomenal lesson, accessible to any child who knows how to subtract, and compelling to everyone, up to and including professional mathematicians. Get a kid engaged in it, and they'll do hundreds of subtraction problems without complaint, because it's helping them solve an honest mathematical mystery. I've seen this idea discussed in math education circles, but I haven't found any references to it online, so I want to share it here.
