Constructing a positive classroom culture - The Learner's Way - 14 views

  •
How might we shape that culture and how will we understand the many forces at work? Understanding the culture of class or perhaps even a school is an important element of our teaching but realising the complexity of this task must come first.

Learning vs Work in a Culture of Thinking - The Learner's Way - 10 views

  •
Earlier this year a group of teachers I work with explored the 'Eight Cultural Forces' identified by Ron Ritchhart of Harvard's Project Zero. In doing so we decided to focus on our use of the term learning instead of the word work. Our goal was to bring our language choices into the spotlight and explore how a more deliberate focus on learning might alter the culture of our classrooms. Two terms later this focus persists and it is worth reflecting on the effect that this has had.

Syrian National Council holds congress in Tunisia ~ Daily World News - 0 views

  •
The Syrian National Council, a coalition of groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad, is holding its first congress in Tunisia. About 200 members of the SNC are meeting near the capital Tunis in a bid to further unify the Syrian opposition. Correspondents say delegates hope the council will emerge looking more like a government-in-waiting. Earlier, thousands of anti-government protesters again took to the streets across Syria following Friday prayers. Activists said at least six people had been killed by security forces in the central city of Homs, which has become a focal point for unrest.

Almir Narayamoga Surui - Extraordinary People Changing the Game - 0 views

  •
As tribe leader, Chief Almir Narayamoga Surui had to do something to save Paiter Surui, their niche in the Amazon Forest. Loggers did not give up easily considering the money century-old trees bring in. When the Surui Chief began to criticize and act against logging, a bounty was put on his head, forcing him to leave his people for seven months. It was not the end of the story. More determined than ever, Chief Almir kept his partnership with Google Earth Outreach and has found a way to liberate his people from welcoming loggers through a 50-year development plan. "The best environment for learning is one that forces students to work through a succession of wrong answers and predispositions until they get to real learning. "

Hands-Off Teaching Cultivates Metacognition | Edutopia - 21 views

  •
"Metacognition (or thinking about thinking) is the secret to and driving force behind all effective learning. If you want your students to learn as much as possible, then you want to maximize the amount of metacognition they're doing. It's a pretty simple equation. The only problem is that most classrooms are set up to promote metacognition in the teachers, not the students."

Dennis is a former English teacher and administrator in urban and suburban schools for many years. Dennis has always gravitated toward K12 leadership, learning and technology topics. He has graduate degrees from Middlebury College's Bread Loaf School of English and Harvard University's School of Education. In addition to blogging about K12 learning, leading and web 2.0 tools/pedagogies at innovation3.edublogs.org, he is president of the Massachusetts affiliate of ASCD, a member of the Leadership Council for ASCD; a member of the Massachusetts Working Group for Educator Quality; Co-Facilitator of the Massachusetts High School Redesign Task Force; and a member of Massachusetts STEM Summit V Planning Committee. The web 2.0 conversation is not about technology tools; it is about student learning. Dennis subscribes to the definition of Professional Learning Communities that Rick and Becky DuFour and many other leaders of education have espoused. In simple terms, * learning (for us and for students) is our purpose, * we can improve student learning if we learn together collaboratively, and * monitoring student learning is the only way to know: 1. what students are learning, 2. how we are teaching and 3. how we get better at it. A former English teacher and administrator in urban and suburban schools for many years, he has always gravitated toward K12 leadership, learning and technology topics. He has graduate degrees from Middlebury College's Bread Loaf School of English and Harvard University's School of Education. He is married with three children and four grandchildren. Among other things, he loves running, cycling, kayaking, contemporary poetry, photography and the outdoors. In the summer of 2007 his professional life changed when he attended the Building Learning Communities Conference 2007 and in three days experienced, for the first time, the power of Web 2.0 tools and their potential for transforming schools and learning. That experience
